#559412 What would you do with 1.3 billion dollars?

Posted by NOFX on 12 January 2016 - 09:11 AM

Not tell anyone... Invest 500 million.  Live off the interest.  With the other 100 million.  I'd buy myself a new truck.  Pay someone to finish my house.  Give up to 30 million away to friends and family.  Kick back and enjoy my free time and go on as many adventures as possible.  Hike the CDT, PCT, Te Araroa.

One thing for sure is that I would not be buying a bunch of crap.  Inevitably, it would affect my lifestyle, but I would want to stay as close to how I am as possible.  I'd still be cooking my own dinners, changing my own oil in my car and eating out just a few times a month.  Although I might break down and hire someone to come in and clean my house once a week... that would be a nice luxury.

Thanks dudes. Dropping everything behind to chase my dream of living out of my pack in woods for 4.5 months was the best decision I ever made. Aside from pushing myself to my limits physically and mentally, I had lots of time to reflect on life and think about what's important to me. I also got to discuss anything imaginable with other like minded people and gain their perspectives as well. If anything, the experience made me much more confident in my beliefs. I'm not going to say that I know what I want.. I think that is a journey we all face that constantly changes... But I will say I am much more sure about the things I don't want... And working for the bank is one of them.

Money is a social construct that we all must use, but we don't have to let our lives revolve around it. Most of us are just trading our time for money. Our time is the most important thing we have. Use it wisely.

Oh yea.. I have no idea what that means Turnbull

Whats NOFX been up to since returning from the grand adventure last summer?  Well, I got a sweet raise to return to my awful job.  I used that to land another programming job making the same amount.  I didn't really want to return to the office life, but I've seem to have gotten myself in a very lucrative position and this job is a lot better than my last.  I had to seize the opportunity.

Over the years, I've posted my opinion of mortgage, rent, the system, etc....  I sold my town home in 2009 and got back to square one.  No money in the bank, but not debt either.  I started living cheap and banking cash.  Which is why I was able to quit my career and take 2014 to enjoy for myself.

Ive been watching the housing market for the past few years.  It's pretty much recovered.  Especially if you are in a city like Denver.  Even here in my small town, people are now able to get loans.  The deals that were out there in 2012 are harder to come by now days, but with patience and preparation, you can find them.

I just signed the contract on a house today.  If all goes well, I'll be a homeowner again sometime in August. I picked up a 1250 sq ft. foreclosure for 56k.  Paying for with cash.. Its tax assessed at a little over 80k and would probably sell for somewhere around there. It looks like someone had fixed it up to try and sell it, only to lose it to the bank.  It needs very little work, if any.

Anyway,  I've finally accomplished my goal.  Ive lived below my means for a few years and was able to save up enough to just buy a place outright.  I'll probably stick around this new job for at least a year or so to stack some cash, but who knows after that.   With minimal bills and a roof over my head, I'm free to jump on an opportunity that comes my way. :peace:

Make sure you take a before/after pic of your cubicle to start things off!!!  That way you can look at it then you have one of those nasty, cold, rainy mornings in the field.

I took a picture of my cubicle so that when it's cold, rainy and hail is coming down sideways, I can remind myself that at least I'm not sitting in that cube....

#536134 Mumble

Posted by NOFX on 17 March 2014 - 02:37 PM

lol, nothing to look in to. Receiving in-game voices haven't been able to be turned down since CSGO came out basically. One of the reasons I need to mute people so often is because I can't turn overall voice receiving down. Not sure why Valve hasn't been able to fix that >_>

voice_scale x      x=0-1.   I usually have mine around .5

Just an update to this. 8 more days of work, a week off of work and then I'll be flying down to Atlanta on the 28th. I'll be hitting the trail first thing on Saturday the 29th. Oh yea. Work offered me a 6 month leave of absence. So it looks like I have health insurance and job to come back to... if I want to come back.

#535226 Blue Screen - Help

It happens a few hours into gaming?  Doesn't happen outside of gaming?

These are my guesses in order...

1) overheating of video card or CPU.  Clean all the dust out of your PC and make sure your CPU and GPU fans are still spinning

2) video card is going bad.  I've never had CPU's go out on me and I've only had one stick of RAM just crap out on me.  I've replaced at least 3 video cards due to eventually having problems.

3) Something is corrupt OS/Driver side.  Reformat and reinstall

In all likeliness it's one of those three.  If it's not.. I would start replacing or only use one stick of memory and then I would move on to mobo... but I seriously doubt it will get to that.

Stress test your GPU with something like http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/ or use prime95to stress test the cpu.  If your GPU test fails, you have the answer.  It's either heat or just dying on you.    Personally, I'd do a reformat before buying a new video card because if you get a new card, you will want to reformat anyway..

Heck yes! Pictures or it didn't happen. Best of luck, and hopefully the skies are kind to you. Enjoy!

Might I suggest an Osprey pack? I used mine all over Oregon Coasts and loved it. It has never failed me.

Long time no see Jiffy.  Osprey makes solid packs, but I've been gearing up for years.  I'll be using a ULA Circuit
