On another note, from talking to NCC, it sounded like I really had nowhwere to go with this board. Can anyone one of you gurus look up my board and verify that I have no real upgrade possibilities?

If so, then I'm sad.

fatty id say this memory is not for you, you have 3 slots and your using 2, so you could buy 1 512 stick or start looking for 1gb sticks, unless you have room on another rig for the other one. I dont think you would see a $50 dollar improvement for a straight swap.

Maybe I should overclock this sucker. What would that get me given the above specs? I used to have a motherboard that was jumperless, can I OC from within the bios menu on this one you think?

You can always OC a bit Fatty but if you are not fully knowledgable in it and if your case isn't well cooled, then I would just not bother with that. Start looking at picking up a new Athlon 64 type of system. I do not think you want to really put any more money into that one.

yeah I like to show my bargain hunting skillz

Fatty you can upgrade your CPU to a 3200+. I think this will give you a small boost and then you would need to uprade your RAM to support the 400fsb. I found that systems run a little better and more stable when the RAM and CPU FSB are on the same frequency "ie... 333 fsb cpu/333 fsb RAM "

Hope this helps

Ok, I order some of the ram last night. I will install it next weekend when I get back home. I'll let ya know if it's any good. :peace:

P.S. If it works, I'll have 2 gig of ram in my AMD64 system. :=

So I could buy this ram you found and use it when I get the 3200+ cpu??

Actually, you could use it now Fatty. You would just have to take out the pc2700 ram you have and put this in it's place. You just wouldn't see much of a difference until you dropped another cpu in.

Also, if you want to mess around with OC'ing a good cpu for that is the AMD Barton 2500+. I've got mine OC'd to a 3200+ with no heat issues. And if you don't want to OC just buy the 3200+. On second thought, skip the 2500+ and go with the 3200+ Barton.

~$150 for processor, ~$50 for memory = ~$200.

or you could donate your box to a hungry and poor college student, take the write-off, and go 64bit.

if you're interested in this option, i'll give you my shipping info 0o0

*edit* lunk's price was higher than my 333mhz fsb 3200 ($20bux).

Replacing the RAM to faster RAM of the same quantity will give you NO NOTICEABLE difference in performance. Guaranteed. Now...if you are into measuring the system performance using all these little experiments, maybe the numbers will be better. But I guarantee it. If you notice a difference in performance replacing your 333Mhz RAM with 400Mhz RAM, I'll buy you a beer.

As for going from a 2600 333Mhz CPU to a 3200 400Mhz CPU, you will get about 10 more fps. Those jitters you see when you are in the market on cs_italy and someone blows up the fruit? Well, that'll go away.

You guys make it too hard.

I ordered the memory.

Someone wanna link me to the CPU I need on newegg?

NCC told me I couldn't upgrade to but like a 2700 or something just a tad over. We sure about this?

Why would you upgrade from a 2600 to a 2700?

According to giga-byte.com, your motherboard doesn't exist.

They have a 7VT600, 7VT600P-L, and a whole bunch more, but no 7VT600L.

At least not that I can find. In any event, it looks like any variant of 7VT600 supports up to 3200+

The Giga Byte page didnt show your exact model number for some reason on the CPU support page, but the closest to your board dont seem to go over 3200+ , that doesnt mean that yours will support that, I would email or call them.

Your board does exist on the webpage, just not in the cpu support section.

AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 1.91GHz 333FSB 512KB Processor

AMD Athlon XP 2700+ 2.167GHz 333FSB 256KB Processor

AMD Athlon XP 2800+ 2.08GHz 333FSB 512KB Processor

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.16GHz 333FSB 512KB Processor

AMD Athlon XP 3200+ 2.2GHz 400FSB 512KB Processor

The 2700+ is a 2.167 ghz cpu which is only a slight step down from the 3200. Plus it's cheaper. Guess the only problem being the 333 FSB. At the same time it's still faster than the 2600+. All in what he wants to spend atm to do this.

Also, you need to scroll further on gigabyte's website. It's listed under the GA-7vt600L. :peace:
