Children of Men

3.5/4 stars

This movie was simply outstanding. The flick reminded me of the games Half Life 2 and Gears of War. The action scenes were so well done and all shot in the same cut. The sets were so realistic that it felt like I was in the heat of the situation. The only flaw of the movie was that the ending seemed a little too soon.

it was only opened in select theatres...if it does well it will probably come to your theatre again in a week or two.

I saw it this weekend and I'd give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. I kept hearing it was "the best film of 2006" (it originally opened in December) and they probably weren't kidding. Like Yomamma said...the ending seemed a bit abrupt but overall was pretty much perfect for the film.

Definitely don't take someone squeamish to see this movie though...the violence is realistic and brutal at times.

when I say it was brutally violent, I mean that there is lots of shooting people in abrupt ways. No torture or things of that nature. Also there is a pretty realistic birth.

Does it show the barbaric side of humans? Like brutal acts of violence for basic things? Like what they did every 10 min in war of the worlds?

40%...tops...

The reason? I could predict the whole movie after 'bout 20 minutes in.

However, it should be noted that this is a taste issue. There weren't any plot-holes or anything, and the movie was structured well with some VERY good camera work, I just didn't like it. I hate movies that I can predict, and let's just say I was 100% on with this one. :boo:

Again, it's a taste thing though, and maybe it's 'cause I'm a writer and I'm used to picking up on plot devices and what not, but not my cup o' tea. That's not to say you won't like it.

okay 9.5/10! AMAZING simply a master piece that was so well done. It combined forces of philosophy and integrity of the human nature, as well as the thrive of perseverance. I'll try as hard as i can to not spoil, but the fact of the matter is... you get the jist of the this flick within the first 2 minutes. The graphic nature embedded in the scenes is far too sophisticated for anyone to fully grasp on the first round about. Constantly you find yourself questioning the flaws of mankind and our purpose.

From here on out, i will spoil a bit...

Within the first few minutes, when the bomb goes off in the Cafe, you are immediately thrown into an intense situation with a woman holding her own arm completely detached. Before this segment, you are given a straight forward setting of the world by newscasters saying the youngest person alive, at 18 years old, has passed. The infertility is expressed fully and you then question yourself if this is a world of punishment from G-d (or a higher calling).

The climax scene, where the main character Theo is running through a city basically in ruins or hell, is all one cut. The director called Cut as soon as the blood splatter hit the camera, but no one heard him so the filming continued and you get a sense of realization with blood following and moving with you. Though this is a faulty cut, it was the only one that came out correctly so they were forced to use it. I am glad they did.

As well as the concept of the baby making war stop, even for a moment.... is beautiful.

I do not remember the director's name or do i care to check at this moment... but he and the crew... and the actors... did a brilliant job.

pretty much agree with you on everything there ShadowDog.

as for the director his name is Alfonso Cuarón (he directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)...as for most of his other films...they can be adequately described as "softcore porn" quite often...but at least in this film he was basically incredible.

reference sake, this is already out on DVD. came out a week or so ago.

if you haven't seen this movie and you enjoy a true quality film (as opposed to movies that just exist for quick entertainment) you absolutely MUST see this one. it is one of the better movies I've seen in years and years.

Hahaha...

I still say the movie was predictable...though I agree the Baby-war stop concept was REALLY cool...

I'm going to put my spoiler in now so as to give an example:

you know the drill...below here...well, don't read it if you haven't seen the movie....

Ok, so here's my beef: As soon as the movie starts, you know it's going to be tragic (i.e. the Cafe bomb and the death of the 18 year old). Right? So when the main character gets close to someone, gets a second chance to rekindle a love lost, you know that the love interest is going to bite it fast. See, at first she's cold and distant, but the more they see each other, the more they warm up. The close they get to being whatever they once were, the closer she is to death. It's a very very old formula used time and time again--recent example: 300, the father and son get closer, there is a humorous and really cool buddy-buddy fight, you know the son is toast and he dies. I don't really feel like listing the millions of examples there are, but you get the picture.

Ok, next. In a "tragic" movie, there is always a point early on that the main character feels like he (or she) can take a break from his or her recent ordeals. However, that haven, most of the time, ends up being exactly the opposite. Here we have the rebel camp (I can't remember the groups name). Ok, by this time, we realize that this is one of those movies where one bad thing after another is going to happen. It has that tone...right down to the fairly stereotypical coloring (nothing is exactly vibrant in the movie)

From that, we can derive that, by the end of the movie, the main character has about a 95% chance of death. The only thing I found myself wondering by the time they got on the boat was whether or not both of them would die before reaching saftey or whether it would just be Theo. Then again, I was able to guess that based on the general reactions of the people who had already seen it, but that doesn't really count in this analysis.

I dunno, maybe I've seen to many movies, or read to many books...something....but I was really let down. I could predict this movie every bit as accurately as I could predict a horror movie...it had a ton of potential, but I think the guy could have done better.

Prisoner of Azkaban was the worst Harry Potter movie...hahaha...sorry, just had to throw that in. The guy completely messed up the order of events in such a way that it detracted from certain plot elements from the book, but that's another topic all together, isn't it? :-)

Like I said before, I'm glad you all enjoyed it. I just wanted to explain why I, overall, did not :) One thing that was done very very well, was the way the movie was shot. They used a hand-held camera for the whole thing, and that's what gives you the feeling of actually being there. Definitely cool on that point. :-)

see, I could have predicted the entire movie too...but that didn't ruin it for me at all because it was still an excellent story and was beautifully told. 99% of the time, movies that "suprise" me, turn out to be crappy movies anyway. To me a story isn't so much about the ending as it is about the journey.

so basically...sucks to be you and I rule.

:)

The movie was a major let down to me. I expected something more and got a long drawn out drama which portrays the military as some evil force. The concept was cool and this movie could have been more.

true dat, i mean the movie was okay and the action scenes were good i was a little dissapointed
