We used to put some gunpowder into spent .22 shells and hold them over lit candles till they blew, kinda like a cannon without a projectile (although the shell would shoot out of the pliers grip if you used too much). Model rocket fuel in this way looked cooler, more like a firework. Wicks + gunpowder + Duct tape = homemade firecrackers also. Safest not to mess with the stuff tho.
