MattKemp August 29, 2012 Share MattKemp August 29, 2012 I'm thinking about joining....I did score a 98 after all My line scores: GS AR WK PC MK EI AS MC AO VE 55 68 66 60 67 50 48 64 62 65 I guess what I'm asking is, what I should do (in regards to potential jobs and such)? My recruiters pretty chill, but still....they only tell you so much
Biggs August 29, 2012 Share Biggs August 29, 2012 Wow your low scores are experience-based, AS and EI. I imagine you'd do pretty well in any field.
Preacher August 30, 2012 Share Preacher August 30, 2012 Your scores are more in line with Airforce advanced jobs than Army, but you can do almost any job in the Army. I don't know your interests so it's hard to offer suggestions. I'm ex-army and served as a Chaplain's Assistant back in the day. I honestly usually suggest Navy/Air Force over Army if you have the scores. I say that after serving and knowing people in all 5 branches as well as the reserves and guard. My daughter is entering the Air Force and I have a nephew who just got out of the Navy. Your score is higher than my daughter, so you can pretty much do most jobs there as well. As far as straight out of the military jobs that pay well, Air Traffic controller pays great if you can handle the stress. Any special forces jobs can get you on as an international driver than can net ya $200,000+, dangerous but lucrative(I have 2 friends doing this right now). Most stuff in the Army Corps of Engineers outside of maintenance pay well. What do you like to do? What would be your dream job?
shift August 30, 2012 Share shift August 30, 2012 Definitely beat me. I only scored a 92 What is your current occupation and what are you trying to do? And from that, what are your expectations of the Army (if you have any)? I'm currently an active duty medic, so I could possibly answer some of your questions and I'm sure that Preacher has a wealth of information that surpasses me. MattKemp August 30, 2012 Author Share MattKemp August 30, 2012 MY interests? Other than playing soccer, the Dodgers, and video games? Hmmm....Not much of anything, but I'm open to a lot lol... I don't really have any expectations for the Army, just mainly finish up my schooling and see where I am in a few years, and decide something else then.....I toyed with the idea of Special Forces for a few days, but I'm settling on Intelligence/Communications/Avionics ish. I'm going to go in and have a look at jobs/signing bonuses on Tuesday, then go down with my mo mand (hopefully) choose a job on Thursday, then swear in on Friday... I mean, if theres a huge signing bonus in one of those, I'm probably going to take it... As far as Air Force/Navy, if the Army gives me a huge bonus in one of those fields up there, I can hardly turn it down, right?
Preacher August 31, 2012 Share Preacher August 31, 2012 Well my suggestion is visit each of the services and hear what they got to say, look at the jobs and then choose the best one for you. On top of that you might want to consider that the Air Force also has it's own Community College and they push you to finish at least a 2 year degree program during your first tour (4 years). Dude don't let anyone sell you on anything because your butt has to pay the bills for what you choose. Army, A/F, Navy all have great opportunities and all of them will sell you a bag of crap and call it cotton candy lol. Just don't go down a road you don't fully understand, because the time in service will be the most memorable of your life.
Sedah August 31, 2012 Share Sedah August 31, 2012 nice, a friend of mine took the asvab weeks back, he got a pretty high score as well. When he talked to his army recruiter, he suggested for him to go to the USAF, which he ended up doing. He was glad he transferred over couple of my friends joined this year air force / navy. I myself went into the air force, I leave this December 11, 2012 for basic and off to Mississippi for tech school, got a job lined up for me as an ATC, def. excited for it. just do some research and ask any questions you have, best of luck. Preacher August 31, 2012 Share Preacher August 31, 2012 Oh and start running now! The hardest part of basic is conditioning to that, if you have that beat before you get there, then you'll breeze through
Jiffy September 25, 2012 Share Jiffy September 25, 2012 Matt, What made you decide to join? What are your expectations/intent? Do you want a career or a job that will open up career possibilities? How long are you considering for your initial enlistment? Do you have any college completed already? Eagle Scout? anything that will gain you rank before you even step foot at Reception? Have you given yourself a PT test and seen where you stand in regards to the standards? For Army BCT you only need to get a 50% in each category, 60% after AIT, and 70% in normal units. some specific units will require an 80% or greater, depending on MOS and type of unit. To be successful in the Army, you need to be a PT stud and a solid marksmen. Everything above that will only set you ahead of your peers and allow yourself better positions, regardless of rank. I have been in the Army since summer of 2007 and have had a myriad of experiences, ranging from great to horrific. I enlisted as a 35F, all source intel analyst, for 2 years before applying/accepted into the Green to Gold program and gaining my commission in June of '10. I am currently deployed to East Paktika, Afghanistan as the Assistant Intelligence Officer for a Light Infantry Battalion Staff and operate primarily as the Collection Manager. I coordinate, plan, direct all collection platforms in the sky, ground, and other collection methods such as HUMINT, SIGINT, and IMINT. On top of that, I am the Battalion Chemical Officer. I earned my Tech Escort Qualification before deployment as well. I have experience being a junior enlisted Soldier, assistant staff officer, and primary special staff. I have served in a CSS type of unit as well as a light Infantry BDE, so I have had a few very different experiences in a relatively short period of time. I sadly have only been stationed at Fort Riley, KS, though. Twice. The army loves me! I am currently studying for the AFAST and building my aviation packet to become a helo pilot. My selection board meets in April of '13 and will determine if I stay or not. If you do not have a solid plan for your enlistment, wait. Too many people go into and take it lightly, not realizing what the hell it is they signed up for. I agree that there are advantages to joining the Air Force/Navy, but so does the Army. It is entirely up to what MOS you want. I nearly joined the Marines OCS program back in 2006, but am incredibly glad I did not. I am a much better Officer and leader for being enlisted. While there are some great Officers straight out of ROTC, they are far and few between in my experience. The leaders I have respected most have almost entirely been prior service and bring a wealth of knowledge. With proper guidance, any task and purpose can be turned into the directed end state. I originally joined the Army to be in intel, do my 4 years, and join the FBI. I found the Army continually allowed me education opportunities, leadership roles, and benefits that are hard to find elsewhere. I wish you luck in your endeavor and if you have any questions, let me know.

Fenix May 31, 2013 Share Fenix May 31, 2013 (edited) So what did you end up doing? I hope you chose Navy! Oh and Air Force has some good deals as well...you belong in one of those, not in the Army. Edit: Ah I see you did join the Navy!...aaand I already made a comment about it. Like I said, don't let it all be about money. Trust me there are jobs out there that are much more fun. Those recruiters are sniveling SOBs...all they do is throw the nuke program out at everyone with an asvab score over 80. Not once did they tell me about the other exciting programs available. Eventually I failed out of the program (Didn't actually fail, but they consider a 2.5 gpa failing), and chose a new program - Aviation Electronics Technician. Also what rate did you choose? There is ET, EM and MM....ET being the hardest and longest of the schools. Edited May 31, 2013 by Fenix
