Never had a gaming laptop.... help!

So I am going to FragFest, and am thinking about getting a laptop to play on when I go out. Unfortunately I have never bought a gaming laptop, so I don't know what to do, or where to go to get one. Only have experience building PC's. Any help would be appreciated. Looking to buy one sometime around March/April when I buy my plane ticket to Ohio.

Just make sure you get one with dedicated video, a large amount of RAM(at least 8gb but 16gb would be a lot better) and if you can swing the cost get an SSD. CPU is important, but honestly software is a little behind on pushing them. If you get an actual dollar amount to work with I could offer a few suggestions.

Eh... my budget is pretty flexible. Wouldn't want to spend more than a couple grand on it. So anything up to that would probably work.

I like the larger (17 in +) screens and frames, because I hate the cramped keyboards on most of the smaller laptops.

Nightling - I don't NEED to spend 2k on a laptop, i just stated that I COULD spend that much. Sheesh, i'm more than happy not too and get a nice laptop for less.

Amertrash - I'm not interested in dragging a laptop all over the place, just need one for Frag Fest. After that... I don't know lol. Raffle it off?

Edit - my eldest has rejected the idea of raffling it off. I seems he would want it after I am done. Ah well

Spend 2k if you want a new high-end Apple Macbook Pro.

I used this site when I bought my laptop in the summer of 2011. It gives you an idea where the video card of the laptop you are considering places among the hundreds of options out there. There are so many.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-of-Laptop-Graphics-Cards.130.0.html

My laptop videocard is a low end class 2 and it handles League of Legends and others just fine.

For example, I found this laptop which seems to be pretty good gaming laptop.

http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-V3-771G-6851-17-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B009JXK17G/ref=sr_1_1?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1354678767&sr=1-1#productDetails

This is the detailed information on the video card. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-645M.81417.0.html

I am looking at i5 based laptops for price while the i7s tend to be more than double the price. That site is great though for finding a laptop with good gaming capabilities without breaking the bank.

The laptop keyboard size (or just the keyboard in general since it is attached to the laptop's screen) is real uncomfortable for me too. Anyone ever tried bringing a USB keyboard that they then attach to their laptops? Does it work?

Let me add that this one is better for a little more money. More video memory and better i7 CPU for only 800.

This one is running a similar performance ATI video but with i5 processor. $100 cheaper though.

Those are just a few anyway. Hope it helps you save some money.

Have you considered a Shuttle PC or a Mini ITX PC?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856101117

Around 13" x 9" x 8" and can fit a "real" video card and a processor, compared to a laptop where you don't get the best options. You can also use a full monitor and keyboard/mouse. My brother built one earlier this year for around $800.00 to put next to our TV. It doubles as a media center and can run modern games with no problem.

Just putting that out there....

Heh, alright I bid this with 8G of RAM(32G max), quad core i7, AMD FirePro M4000 video, a 128G SSD, a 500GB HDD, 720p webcam, 1080p wide video angle panel, firewire, usb 3.0, touchpad + eraserhead mouse, Centrino N wireless, bluetooth, 8 cell battery, blue-ray, and all in all one of the toughest notebooks made. I'll drop ship it to you for $2,000 on the dot, $249 cheaper than MSRP :P

I too am in the market for a gaming laptop. It can be big and bulky. I really like the laptop in the first link here but I really would like Windows 7. The price range would be 700-800. Any other suggestions? I'm not opposed to refurbished if you guys feel that is a safe route to go.

Just gonna join in on the bandwagon here as my 3 year old HP laptop (which wasn't top of the line when I got it) could really use a good replacement. Looking for a mix between decent battery life and decent gaming. I'd say max 1000 cash dollar hairs.

After doing some cross referencing with notebookcheck.net and prices and reviews on Amazon and Newegg, these would be my recommendations based on price first while still being a class 2 video card for some gaming capabilities.

http://www.amazon.co...57587968&sr=1-3

Details on the video card: http://www.notebookc...0M.63761.0.html

This one is an excellent price for the performance and I would def get this one over the one I linked above.

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16834215615

Here are the specs of the video card: http://www.notebookc...0M.71579.0.html

The very bottom gives you framerates based on graphics detail.

This one here is also excellent and is similar to the one above but is Lenovo. It is an i5 but it is a little bit cheaper.

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16834310630

Here are the specs and details on the video card.

http://www.notebookc...5M.66964.0.html

This one here is a beast for the price range and the video card is a Class 1 (top class) video card.

It rings in at $850. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215672

Here are the details on the video card. It is nice!

http://www.notebookc...0M.71887.0.html

Here is an alternative Samsung at about $750 running a top Class 2 ATI card.

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16834131394

Here are the specs on the video card: http://www.notebookc...0M.72678.0.html

You can always find more in this price range as well.

I am only looking now because my son is getting my current good gaming laptop since he is into this one PC game.
