Bug with password change form in account settings

I came to change my password. When I put in my current password and my new password and hit Submit, the form reset and an error message said that "Passwords cannot be longer than 72 characters," in the current password field. This is odd because my current password is/was longer than 72 characters. Cutting it down to 72 characters in a text editor and pasting it in fixed the problem.

But this raises a separate question. If the form happily accepts the first 72 characters of my password does this mean passwords are stored in plain text?
