  1. 360 Leads Holiday Sales

But Nintendo was right on Microsoft's heels.

January 2, 2007 - According to preliminary NPD data, the Xbox 360 was the best-selling console during the holiday season in the U.S. CNBC is reporting that Americans picked up two million units of Microsoft's system during the period.

But Nintendo was not far behind. In spite of limited availability, the Wii sold 1.8 million units from its launch until December 25. Sony only moved approximately 750,000 units of the PlayStation 3, due to manufacturing problems and decreased demand. Over the holidays, IGN repeatedly found PS3s available at retailers while no Wiis were in sight. The price of a PS3 on eBay has also dropped to around its MSRP, while the Wii is still selling for over twice its retail price.

NPD expects to release complete sales data for the holiday season later this month.

  2. DOOD! I'm here! I'm here!

My recommended games (that you don't already have):

CoD3 - Just got it today, and it rocks. The MP is awesome, and is a nice change of pace from...

RS:Vegas - Realism is awesome, SP is awesome, controls are tight! Slower than CoD3, but it is dope.

As for the resolution question, I read somewhere that most of the games run better at 720p, and that GoW specifically is a "720p game." I don't have a choice, cuz my TV only displays in 720p. It accepts a 1080i signal, but then downconverts it to 720p, so I just run my 360 in 720p. Conversion = loss (I learned that from Mo!).

As for the HD-DVD player, it only benefits movies, not games. I don't know of any plans in the future by Microsoft to try to use it for games, but right now it's just movies. If your TV can display movies in 1080p or 1080i, it is awesome. I have never seen a clearer picture. For movies I will set it to 1080i and let the TV downconvert, because even at 720p they are much clearer than regular DVDs.

The question is: Do you want to spend the money on a format that might not prevail? The movie library is still small, and who knows what will happen with the "format battle." However, for $200 you can get a HD-DVD player, and with 1080p now supported by the 360, you can't find an "next generation" HD player (Blu-Ray or HD-DVD) with these capabilities for even close to that cost.

One of the features that is pretty cool is that a lot of the HD-DVD movies contain both the HD and regular DVD verisons of the movie, so it can be played in both an HD-DVD or a DVD player. SO, you can still play them in a portable player or laptop if you are traveling.

I can't really recommend buying it, nor can I recommend not buying it. It comes down to whether or not you...

    1) have the equipment (TV, etc.) to support the high def format, and...

    2) accept the risk of possibly owning a machine that won't have much of a library if it loses.

I don't regret buying it. THE PICTURE IS AMAZING. For $200 I'm in on the new HD format war. The features of the new disks are cool (PIP for stuff, menu accessible while the movie plays, and more), and, well, THE PICTURE IS AMAZING.

I would suggest checking reviews of the disks before you buy. And, you can rent them from Netfilx, which is cool.

    :peace:

  3. Dook!

Great news! We continue to keep you guys in our prayers. I'm glad you had such a wonderful Christmas.

Your posts over the last couple of years have been moving, inspiring, thoughtful, and yes, have helped to give me, and several others here, a better sense and appreciation for what is important in this life.

Danielle, you've got a great daddy! No matter what is going on today - if he's given you extra homework, grounded you, not bought you that car, or embarrassed you in front of your friends - he did it because he loves you. Give him a hug anyway, because you have all sorts of catching up to do!

May God bless you, Dukes, today and always.

    Greg

  4. I bought the game and downloaded both demos...

Single player is fun, i but the co-op will be awsome. And yeah they dummed down the gfx for multiplayer. It's kinda fun i dunno I'm not WOWed. Gear of war never dummed down their GFX... ditto with Double Agent.

I dunno what to do but I am going to run to the store and by Viva Pinata.

Yeah, but GoW only has 4 vs. 4 MP with much smaller scale maps. In RS:V you have 2x the players, about a million times the uniform and gear options, and much larger and more dynamic environments.

  5. LCD and Plasma TVs that say they support 1080i only mean that they can handle a signal (like DirectTV's HD service) at 1080i, but the TV itself down-converts that signal to 720p. This is why you can't select 1920x1080 (as 1080i) out of that list. As yomamma pointed out, 720p is 1280x720. Now most LCD's are actually 1360x768, so double check your res. I know a lot of manufacturers are weird when it comes to actually disclosing the exact pixel count of their screens...even in the manuals!

Thanks Mo. That makes sense.

  6. My TV is a little older and doesn't support 1080p, unfortunately. Just 1080i.

The VGA display options screen doesn't do it by HD type (i.e. 480p, 720p, 1080i, etc.), it does it like a PC and gives you resolution dimensions. So, while I could set it to 1080i with the component cable, I can only set it to one of the dimensions listed above. The TV doesn't accept 1920x1080 as a resolution when I select it, probably because the 1080 through the VGA is "p" and not "i."

I did notice that, when I start up the 360, the display shows up faster with it set to the native res (rather than the 1280x1024), probably because it isn't down-converting the signal to 1260x180....?

    Maybe?

  7. Hey, whudats, I just try to be fair. Besides, an even-keel, middle-of-the-road opinion is rare is the world of the console Holy Wars, so the odds that I can find a unique reason to bash any console are low. Might as well stand out this way :)

    Roger that. :smillie_smilling:

  8. but the single player stuff is awesome. The cover control system is a little better than gears, imo mainly because you can do some rough aiming without exposing from cover, then pop out for a quick hs then hide again. so satisfying! :D

You got that right. The cover system is great.

And yes, I've noticed that the graphics aren't quite as good on Live as they are in SP, but I only notice when I play SP after playing MP for a while. The graphics are still pretty nice on Live.

  9. Yeah, I looked up the native resolution of my TV and set it to that (1260 x 768). Do you guys know how this works with HD? I'm assuming that means that my games will run in 720p? Cuz the TV is capable of 1080i...

The reason I'm asking is because I just switched to the VGA cable from the component HD cable and am trying to get the settings just right.

  10. I got the HD-DVD add-on for the 360, and yes, the visuals are so amazing. Watching a regular DVD now looks grainy.

This might be an easy question, but can someone tell me if the PS3 plays DVDs? My first search on google turned up a bunch of nonsense about combo players...

    BTW, well said App Fox.

  11. The main difference between Catholicism and Protestantism:

Catholics believe you can get to heaven by doing good works. They believe that you can earn your way into heaven by what you do while you are alive. If you were to ask a Catholic if and why they are going to heaven, they would say something like "I think so. I mean, I try to do all the right things, and go to church every weekend. I think I've lived a pretty good life."

Protestants believe that the only way to heaven is through the salvation of Jesus Christ's death and His resurrection. If you were to ask a born again Christian if and why they are going to heaven, they would say something like "Yes. There is nothing that can get me there but my complete surrender to Christ and my trust in his grace. My belief in the salvation He granted by dying for me, for us, is all that I need."

  12. :o I want a HUD in my car!!!... and a joystick... and some missiles, bombs, and a couple roles royce jet engines....

Snake boy. Delats. Pfft. Just because it increases the damage doesn't mean it helps you shoot straighter!

    :wavey:

  14. Okay, the answer seems obvious, but I can't tell...

Which resolution is better (i.e. higher)?

    1) 1280x1024

    or

    2) 1360x768

They both look the same to me. If you just go down the list, from lowest to highest, then #2 should be better...right?
