  1. I set CS perf test to what Dark had: all sttings at max and at 1280 x 1024(LCD). Here's my scores:

    2.2 (11x200) = 135fps

    2.4 (11x220) = 137fps

    2.5 (11x228) = 139fps

Little bit under Darks score but that is excpected due to his GTX, still I'm happy considering the 3500+ and the 7900GT put me back $515, 6 months ago.

This thread sparked an interest back into OCing my 64. So when I tried to hit 2.5 yesterday I forgot to change my multiplier down again (I had been at 10x250 before) and booted at 1725...for about 10 seconds. then I reset to get into the BIOS that lasted 5 seconds. The next time I hit the reset button it would'nt do jack. Ended up clearing my CMOS and noticed my Arctic Cooler Pro 64 was Hot!, always cool to the touch before and noticed the radiator fins were dusted over. Clearing the dust, running 2.4 idle at 42C and 49C under load -same as 2.2 with the dirty heatsink fins. Going to stick runnig at 2.4 for awhile.

Just remember guys the hamster wheel turning in the living room 15 feet is overpowering the noise eminating from my PC. :D

  2. dark, i will run at those settings when i get a chance. get rid of norton. it lags your computer a ton. get something free like avg. also, pm me your e-mail and i'll send you a file to get rid of genuine advantage.

bush, on my old crt i had to run at 100hz otherwise my eyes die. you should be able to turn most of your settings up on a game like that. ut is mostly cpu limited on today's high end cards.

All I play is Onslaught and some of the maps are HUGE. I do drop below 60fps on some maps in certain areas so I play it safe with 2xAA and 8xAF. Honestly I never tried running it any higher then those levels, sure does look sweet as-is.

  3. Bush: have you enabled AA and AF for ut2k4? If so, have you noticed any glitches ever?

Temps are not idle at 28-29. After gaming for an hour, they're at 34ish. :D

Yes I have 2xAA and 8xAF on for UT2k4 but I don't see any glitches and doesnt make a fps difference. I also run at 1152x864 res. I know its a wierd res but I can get 85hz sync at that and if I go any higher res my old montor drops to 75hz and it killz me eyes.

  4. Durrr, I was thinking 1% of 150 was 15. So it is a 6% increase, not too bad for free I might actually get up to 10% after 2.5 but still I don't like the added noise.

I am just used to back in the day when I had a Pentium 75 running at 100, a Celeron 300A @ 450, a 533A @ 800. The gains of overclocking were massive. I still play with my old 300A system to this day with a pair of Voodoo2 in SLI, man is the old GlobalWin's twin fans are loud, the're worn out. A tech told me long ago not to overclock, I'll kill the chips. The 300A still runs over 7 years laster.

Yeah as winter and UT 2007 approches I may try to run mine around 2.5, but I just want quiet and stability. If I cant achieve both at the same time I will throttle it down again.

For Christmas I thought about getting another gig o' ram and another 7900GT but I think I'm going to shoot for one of those new LoCS widescreens for the living room.

  5. Just ramped my 2.2 up to 2.4, the CS perf test went from 150 to 159.

I use my PC for primarily for gaming, entertainment and communications. Right now it just doesn't make sense to me to overclock, unless I see over a 10% boost in a game. According to what CS test and Doom3 timedemo1 have to say about it, I am not even getting a 1% increase. Maybe in the future when I get a better video card. Which brings me to another question...

Why is my 64 2.2g + 7900GT combo on par with Dark's dually @ 2.5 + GTX as far as CS perf test?

  6. I went up to 2.53 now. I was at 2.51, getting 149ish fps in CS:S stress test, then went to 2.53 and it dropped to 240ish fps. Any ideas why? And did I ever mention I hate filelodge? yeah, it's true. Oh yeah, and steam too.

Edit: I have one. I forgot I had i explorer running. I did the test again and got 148. Guess that was it.

At what point do you have to start increasing the volts? I'm sitting at 2.53 and 30 C cpu and 37 C system. I feel like I have room left to go...

Is there some kinda cap on the fps in the CS test? I just ran it and got 150, same as yours but I'm running a vanilla 64 3500+ and a 7900GT. Figured your GTX would have pulled ahead considerably.

Last month after the AMD price plumet, I OC'ed my 3500+ from 2.2. to 2.4 (10x240). I had to add a smidgen of voltage to make it stable, I can't remember but the 2.4g settings are saved in my BIOS Reloder program if I need to retrieve them (I love you Biostar T-Force!). The extra speed boosted my Quake 3 bench fron 75fps to 78fps -wooptie. But the thing is this: to keep my CPU at the old 2.2 coolness the fan adjusted itself and now was audible. :yuck:

All in all the minute performance gain wasn't worth the extra noise to me so I am running at default speeds.

  7. Bushwack and I use the stuff that radio shack sells for like $4. Its pretty good. Remember though if your starting to get warm you might want to look into a better heatsink/fan. Make sure your case is getting proper air movement also. Some of that silver compound likes to dry out after a while and you need to reapply it once a year. Just a thought. :peace:

Yup I like the white silicone paste. I once tried the Arctic Silver II when I had my Athlon XP 1600+. About a year and a half I starting having stability problems and couldn't narrow it down to anything. Ended getting a new mobo and a mobile XP and clocking it up to 2.2ghz. When I took my Zalman heatsink off the old CPU, the Arctic Silver had dried up.

Best advice I can give no matter what you paste you use, follow the directions, and dont use too much. I put a small drop on the chip then smooth it out with some cellophane wrap on my finger. Rememer if your CPU and heatsink were perfectly flat no paste would be necessary. It's only filling in the gaps between the two surfaces that aren't touching.

  8. Maybe I am mistaken about what Cool'nQuiet is. My motherboard says "Supports AMD Cool'nQuiet Technology" but no where is it in the BIOS. Is this a software program? In my BIOS there is a smart fan controller that can be enabled. I thought that was the Cool'nQuiet thingy. It is a highly configurable fan speed controller, wish the case fans used it too.

  9. I DONT know if those are accurate temps, BUT, if they are...

Under 50C at load on and amd is ok. No worries. If your poppin over 50, start realizing that the life of your cpu IS getting shorter.

I'm going to agree with this, but I don't think it would hurt to run in the 50's after looking at what todays GPUs run at. My 7900 GT at the moment is at 56 with its stock heatsink and fan.

I also dont think it should be a problem to overclock with 'Cool and Quiet' enabled -providing you know what your doing. It works great on my system , as my temps never gets over 49 too with prime running. You can set the max fan speed to whatever temperature you like, so when your not gaming you don't have to listen to your CPU fan whine. But it did take me awhile to get the temp/fan settings adjusted just right.

  10. Bushie - is that your case all put together, or did you take off a panel to see a closeup of the fan? And it sounds like you were dealing with what I'm dealing with now. If you can hear your computer in another room, it is WAY too loud imo. :)

Yeah thats my comp with the front panel pulled off. The pic is of the front case fan.

I also use a Arctic Freezer 64 Pro on my Athlon 64. It is quiet in itself but I also have AMDs "Cool and Quiet" feature activated on my mobo. Now the fan on it usually hovers around 1100 rpm idle @ 42C and up to 1400 under load @ 48C. Totally silent at 1400 too.

I overclocked my 3500+ the other day from 2.2g to 2.4g (10x240) Doom3 benched from 75fps to 78fps. Not a noticable increase but my CPU was much hotter and the fan noise became noticeable. Not worth the extra heat/noise so I am currently back at stock speed.

  11. My computer room is actually a dinning room that one wall has a double door opening that leads into the living room. A few years ago I could watch TV on the couch and hear the comps running in the next room. Very annoying, something had to be done. With a little cash (buying all new agjustable fans) and a little work all is peaceful now.

Case fans seem to be make the most noise, even if they are the quiet type the air rushing through the pressed factory grill made the most noise for me. Remove them! On the back side of the case you may want to place a wire grill over those fans for safety.

    fanhole.JPG

All I used was a dremel tool, not only does this decrease noise, but will increase air flow to boot.

-ew the fan was spinning when I took this picture, didn't see the nasty dust lol

Seems the loudest things in comp now is a old IBM Deskstar 80gig I use for back up. It's mounted in the top 5 1/4 bay and the sound comes through the front plastic bezel. Though under normal conditions I cant hear it unless I stick my head 10 inches from it.

  12. Same here, I just scrolled, scrolled and scrolled to the bottom then put this.

Sorry, maybe you should try out a few short episodes first.

Someone review this and let me know if it's worth reading.

  13. "18" here. Not for any other reason then that I have been shooting this number for a while. Games just "play" better for me at 18. Any more and it becomes mayhem for many maps, can't get anywhere without getting sniped or avrilized. Any less and people like Primus think I'm after them all the time, when I'm not, I just have less people to spread my love with.

When I became a reg on GC it was at 18, I didn't care for the higher number servers that abound.

Oops -didn't read Flitters post above. :shrug03:

  14. I've never used one or really was 100% positive about a hax untill last weekend. It was late and I joined a Primeval demo server for some fun since my aim gets a little off on weekend nights. :mwink: Any way I met someone that just could not miss me with a shock rifle. I figued my balance was just off or something. UNTILL I was charging the middle node and saw a shock beem coming out of the middle of the tree trunk and hitting the node. So I ran around to the other side of the tree and sure enough there was Sir Hax-a-lot. Caused the game to stink, everyone complaining and leaving, but the best thing was the we still won the round. What a dill weed.

  15. I <3 my Stacker. The 830 is cool but it wasn't out when I bought mine and I have decided that I didnt want a case with a door anyways. The Centurion IS a very awesome case.

I agree my CM Stacker is the best case I've ever had.

Some how I just can't get rid of my Enlight case. It's classic beige will someday come back in style. :biglaugha:

I've had it for years and is on it's 3rd system inside.

  16. My kids computer started making a wicked racket, wonderful. Took a while before I isolated the noise to the 2 year old BFG 5900 XT that was in it, fan was about to die. Figured I'd take it out before the GPU overheated.

Thought I would just replace the cooler myself but shipping it to BFG would cost less. Called them on the 4th (wow they are open) and recieved a RMA number. Guess what I got back today? A new 6600 GT OC! The card is about 30% faster then the old one but when it comes to shader games, 10 fold (has shader 3 support). Plus it has a purty blue fan that lights up that maches thier case lighting.

Another thing: I never registered the card and they never asked for a proof of purchase.

    Any other BFG fans? :luxhello:

  17. All we had was a black and white console that played pong and a few variations and came with a light gun. Thing is it ran off of 4 or 6 DD batteries and my folks only bought them the one time...was fun while the batteries lasted, lol.

I didn't become an addict untill I was 12. Got a TI/99 4A for christmas when they were $50. I used to pick up cans on the side of the road and recycle them for cash to by game carts. Later I found out a guy in class already had the system and bookoo's of games. We became best friends for many years, untill women became involved.
