  1. you can have an extra 40gb for storing all those naked pictures of Birdman ;)

    :P

and I hope IBM/Hitachi harddrive don't have too many problems. Here's my list.

In my main system I have a

    120GB Hitachi 180GXP w/8MB Cache

    add that with these

    1. 120GB Hitachi 180GXP w/8MB Cache

    2. 80GB Hitachi 7k250 w/8MB Cache

    3. 80GB IBM 120GXP w/8MB Cache

    4. 30GB Hitachi 180GXP w/2MB Cache

    5. 30GB IBM 75GXP w/2MB Cache

    6. 10GB IBM

    7. 3GB Western Digital

    8. 2GB Western Digital

    9. 2GB Western Digital(DEAD_was my SmoothWall HD)

  2. No, the people I dealt with on the phone are the only people you can call, the national call center. SO no, the company's support in general is appalling. Those local to me who do the actual set up my be nice but I will not be calling them.

I was talking about actual quality of the connections.

    Not the people you call.

But yeah usually all the people with-in a 3 hour radius call one central location and then those people call local service men.

  3. My experiance and anyone that lives in Radford's experiance with Charter is horrible.

I think the big thing about ISP's is that it can vary from neighborhood to neighborhood. Not to mention from City to City.

It's all a game of luck really.

People call Comcast the worst provider ever, but I had them in PA and they were sweet.

You can't tell by company really, it's all about where you live.

  4. and Ive read about the Power Lines, awesome idea.

Yeah, but I don't think it works well at all. :(

Show on Tech TV was talking about it a couple months ago. I think the plan was a good one, but it just doesn't work well(speed wise).

Adelphia sucks for 2 out of the 4 people that I know who have it.

Comcast has excellent internet and cable TV packages(cheap too).

Charter also had good internet, but their cable TV kinda sux.

I haven't heard of anyone around here (KY) that has had problems with their DSL though.

I hope that after all this trouble with the sales department that the service they provide won't suck.

    Here's to sub 50Ms ping :D .

  5. And as for looks, I found HL2 more gourgious...don't ask why (probably personal preferences) but it does look good...especially indoors its more than on par with Doom3. And when it comes to enviroment interactiveness it just blows away Doom3 into the garbage bin.

The shadows and lighting (what the doom 3 engine was made to specialize in) won’t be matched by the Source engine.

Source will prolly have better textures, and seem like a sweet engine because it will have huge outdoor environments (although not FarCry HUGE), but that doesn’t mean it will be more advanced than the Doom engine.

It’s just that the two games aren’t really comparable.

Just like FarCry and Doom 3 shouldn’t be compared.

  6. Here is a question... Suppose I buy it through steam and play the game. What would hinder me from giving my steam account to my buddy and letting him dl and play the game. Other than moral convictions.

    Nothing.

Although I'm certain that Valve would be able to tell if you were both logged on at the same time playing a game(if you both had internet plugged in).

If they wanted to be evil they could prolly ban your account from online play.

Course if you aren't logged onto steam under the same account while you were both playing HL 2 I don't think it would be a problem, till u got caught.

  7. I added another 512MB of RAM to my system for Doom 3 and couldn't notice any difference in load times.

I still had to run the time demo twice to get a good FPS that was representative of actual gameplay.

UT 2k4 loads a lot quicker with 1GB of RAM though.

  8. So is that only for the beta peeps? Or if you buy it through steam. Is buying it through steam viable?

I'm going to get the game. Just have to figure out the best way.

    That's a good question.

I know that it would apply to ATI owners that have the HL2 coupon.

But as for everyone else I'm not for sure.

If the Doom 3 release taught me anything it is to never preorder a big game.

If I would have preordered Doom 3 from any place online I would have gotten it 3 days after Best Buy did.

Steam seems to make preordering pointless as well because if you precache the game content then you will be able to play it the second it comes out. That is if steam allows u to purchase HL 2 online.

In store pick ups for newer games is a bad idea at a place like ebgames too.

Cause the Eb Games around here didn't get Doom 3 till Wal-Mart did(which is sad).

Where as Best Buy with it's huge distribution centers had Doom 3 the morning it was released.

  9. These new cards don't put off barely more heat then the old cards. DDR3 runs cooler, the core's are drawing less volts then 9800's do.

    Exactly.

Shuttles won't have problems with any video cards that fit into them(single slot solutions).

    6800GT, x800Pro, X800XT

Those are your choices for high end video cards in a Shuttle PC.

All are almost twice as fast as a 9800XT is many cases.

  10. Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz 800MHz FSB

    I would maybe get a 3.2GHz P4 processor.

There would be less chance of heat problems and the 3.4 and 3.6 models produce insane amounts of heat.

The 9800XT video card is old hat.

Try to get a new gen card if possible.

  11. That's with the 5200NU.

At one time there was a 5200Ultra that is about the same speed as a 5600XT is now.

They have just changed numbers of cards and rearranged prices since I suppose.

But the 5200Nu is no where near 5600XT speeds.

    The 5200Ultra was and is.

    http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDQ0LDE=

That article matches up the 5200Ultra and 5600Ultra.

Note, however, that the 5600Ultra is faster than the 5600XT.

    So my original statement;

If im not mistaking the 5600XT is pretty much the same speed as a 5200(which would get about the performance that you are getting).

stands if the 5200 series I was talking about were an Ultra.
