  1. hehe...guess we could all wait 20 years and look back and say "wow...hasn't been anyone in office cept Democrats for 20 years...thats odd"

Census has been done for hundreds of years and there has never been a need to have it controlled within the whitehouse. Why do we need it now?

You also seem to want to keep throwing out the term "Alarmist fear mongering". Seems what politics is all about these days. Bush used fear to get backing for his war. Obama is using fear to get TARP passed. Look beyond the party and make sure any goverment isn't trying to grab too much control.

The point of this thread is to question why...something we need to continue to do.

  2. AGAIN

They can still receive the salary they are accustomed to. Its just anything over 500,000 will be stock shares. I'm not sure of the rules regarding the sales of those shares, there might be a waiting period before they can sell them, but they will still be able to receive full compensation for their work. the incentive then is to improve the stock value of the company which in turn will increase the income of the CEO. This is mearly an attempt to make sure that money given to a company gos to proping up the company, not the CEO.

    Shaftiel

If the companies can simply pay the guy 500,000 cash and then give them another 700,000 in stock which they can sell right away and have their 1.2 mill then what is the purpose of limiting the pay at all? Smokescreen to help pass the whole thing?

If an apple is an apple don't call it an orange...it's an apple:)

They are limiting pay. The other perks stay the same. History will tell if mistakes were made...till then it's all speculation and paranoia...and I've got both:)

  3. Partially true, I think the bigger issue is the precedent this sets.

There ya go...to chance crossing over to the conspiracy forum...

So, today we limit the CEO pay to 500,000 for those taking TARP. Tomorrow we realize that those companies can't retain good talent because the top brass are moving to other companies that make more money. So, lets limit all CEO pay to 500,000 to level the field. Well, now if the CEO makes 500,000 then we need to set the next level of management or companies can get around the CEO pay limit by giving the "CEO" a different title. Now we limit that to 400,000. This happens till they get down to your job and now all salaries are set based on the governments decisions.

Well, thats not so bad. Now everyone doing the same job gets paid the same right? Well, cept there is then no incentive to actually try. You can't get ahead because you are stuck right with every other person doing the same job.

So, this is a kinda wild view of a future that could occur but the point is any change to give government more control over things is a slippery one. That is why people are against the cap.

  4. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/first100da...us-white-house/

Why are decisions like this being made when we have a few more important decisions to make. Sure seems like an attempt to control the voting on the surface and to push it by while everyone is focused on TARP is kinda sneaky.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, told FOX News on Monday that he finds it hard to believe the Obama administration felt the need to place re-evaluation of the inner workings of the census so high on his to-do list, just three weeks into his presidency.
  5. It's because of the precident it sets. Now if other copanies pay more than that how will the limited companies get someone to do the job. Why work at company A for 500k when you can work at company B for 1.2 mill? So, you end up with the lesser of the CEOs which doesn't help the company in the long run. This puts the company at a disadvantage as far as retaining quaity talent. (I'm making a huge assumption that there are quality CEOs out there...LOL)

So, it SOUNDS good but when you start digging in and it shows some flaws in the logic. At this point I can't say it's a bad idea, but then the entire TARP thing might be a bad idea...that is for history to tell.

When I first heard it I thought "Yea, great idea". Then I started thinking about it and talking to some people and am not so sure anymore.

  6. <sarcasm>Lets make it really easy to get credit which will spur spending and move the economy forward!!!</sarcasm>

I agree with the part of the plan that includes creating jobs to upgrade government and school buildings. I do not agree with the parts that put money in the social system...I'd rather see that money go to create more jobs. I believe creating jobs is the only way out. Giving people money via social services does nothing but put us more in debt.

  7. I think the point Beck is trying to make is that they decided to put 2% biodiesel in the fuel...ok, thats not bad...but when the tanks froze, instead of taking the 2% out they decide to leave the buses idle overnight.

The point of the thread was more to laugh at the decision there, however...

The comparison is that the government decides to close the prision (add 2% biodiesel) but then realizes they have to put all the people somewhere (the fuel freezes) so, what do they do with the people...tbd (leave the buses running all night).

  8. yup...do like Glenn Beck...I find this interesting...typical...and it does apply to quite a few instances. This one makes me giggle at the ignorance...sorry Minnesota folks.

    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,481689,00.html

The other story that everyone else is covering is President Obama's plan to close Gitmo. It is important and I'll come back to it.

But there is one thing today that ties all of these things together. One thing that is universally true: government programs make you feel good, but they only make things worse. Let me give you a recent example that will make blood shoot out of your eyes.

In Minnesota, there's a recent state law that requires a two percent mix of biodiesel in diesel fuel. They say this will all help save the planet  which makes people feel really good  and that is so easy and effective, they'll gradually raise the minimum biofuel to 20 percent.

Sounds great, right? I mean, who doesn't love those trees?

Let's look at reality. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that on Friday, the Bloomington School District had to cancel all their classes because some of their buses couldn't start. Why couldn't the buses start? Because apparently this biodiesel blend turns into a gel when it gets too cold. Hello! It's Minnesota in January!

Even worse, school nurses had to treat some kids for hypothermia after they hung out at bus stops for hours in negative 20 degree weather, or because they were on buses that stalled and of course the heaters don't work without running engines, which they can't do because the darn engines won't run on gel. Then the geniuses decide that the way to overcome this is to let the buses idle all night. Perfect, since they're trying to save the environment.

Do people care about making good decisions anymore or are we just making stuff up that makes us feel all warm and cuddly inside?

Lawmakers put children's safety at stake because they don't want their buses to run on a politically incorrect kind of fuel.

This is exactly like President Obama's order to close Gitmo without any real plan for what to do with the prisoners. Sure it makes us feel warm and cozy inside, but did anyone actually think this through?

  9. Was talking to a guy about this at work the other day. The problem is the polar ice being lost...once it gets cold enough that this starts to grow we can feel better.

He saw a show that explained it this way. They took a glass of water and put an ice cube in it. They then monitored the temp while heating the water. The water temp did not increase as the ice continued to absorb the heat. As soon as the ice was fully melted thus could not absorb the heat anymore the water temp rose at a quick pace.

Theory is the same thing will happen on earth. Right now during the hot periods the polar ice keeps the oceans cool by absorbing the heat. Once they are gone there will be nothing left to absorb the heat and the temp will rise.

Yes Virginia global warming is a problem. We may not be the cause (could just be the flow of nature, heck, we had an ice age before, maybe this has all happened before) but we certainly aren't helping any.

  10. I read an op article the other day that said the auto bailout was wrong and that doing the bailout would only postpone the inevitable of the big 3 going bankrupt...however, he also said that the bailout was the quickest and easiest way for the government to keep people employed thus it should happen.

Obama's got some good plans with spending money to upgrade the government buildings, roads and schools...but that, from the op, will take too long to help right now.

my OP? The only thing that is going to help our country is when people stop being so greedy.

  11. You live in Lebanon? Damn...we should hook up sometime...LOL

Funny thing is I sometimes think I saw Batty more when he lived on the other side of Cincinnati. We used to make an effort to get out to lunch every once in a while. Now we live close and it's just no big deal to see him...just another Lebanonite...LOL

Actually, now his new job is going to be a few miles from where I work so lunches can again resume:)

  12. i really like how he is getting so many professors in on this administration.. The good professors I had were some of the most intelligent people I've ever met.

Yes but there is an old saying that goes something like "those who can't do teach". So, is he filling his administration with people who can't "do"? :peace:

  13. The auto industry bail out is a shame...the bank bailout is actually in progress but they aren't dumping the full 700 into it at once. I think I read they had put 34 billion or some such into it so far. The issue there is they are changing what they are doing since they got the cash...thats just bad.

Unions should all go away. They had a time but now they are just a cog in the machine messing things up. Back when there were no government regulations on workplace safety and pay they had a place. Now they just suck down the economy. You think a CEO makes lots of money? Look into what the union guys are making.

If you get rid of unions that same $40/hour worker could probably make $30 and break even.

Regarding the auto bailout. There are too many jobs there to not give them some help. The economy is too weak right now to support that. So, you want to either bail out the industry or pay unemployment for the displaced workers...probably the same net result.

If they do it right and make sure the money is used to make better, more efficient cars it may be a good thing. If they continue to make cars that won't sell...waste of time.

Unions still need to go...unions are bad...just like insurance companies;)

  14. Maybe he typed something up and thought it said what he meant only to find out it was interpretted incorrectly. Though we all know the candidates don't know how to use a computer;)

Back to the real issue...you force a child to do community service. So, what does the kid who lives in the rich area of town...the streets are clean...taxes pay for everything to stay nice. Do they wash police cars? Do you send them elsewhere to volunteer? If you do that what if they get hurt or killed while in say the "not so nice" part of town while doing their mandatory volunteer work. What if your mandate a volunteer to clean up a road and they are struck by a car or fall in a hole & break a leg?

It's a bad idea all along. Mandatory volunteering is bad...very bad...Make it a choice and it's ok...choose to volunteer get more school funds. Choose to volunteer get that welfare check...choose to volunteer get those food stamps.

    Key word is choose.

My company allows me to do 2 paid days of volunteer work every year. I choose to do that cause 2 days working at a charity is better than 2 days in the office. Some jobs suck...some are nice...most leave you sad for those you just helped. So, they make it desirable for me to volunteer but don't force it...and it works.

  15. What if a teacher presented facts to your child and your child then made up his/hers own mind. I'm sure many would still blame the teacher if the childs newly formed opinion was different than your own.

That is what I expect out of an education system and I'm sure for the most part it is done that way. I also would say it's impossible to have a discussion about politics without some of your beliefs coming out. However, this case was the extreme and has no place in the education system.

  16. It's always bugged my when the school decides to instill values into my child instead of just teaching the facts but thats a battle I'll always have. This, however, is very disturbing...during the election I was very careful to pay attention to what my daughter said (she is 9) and made sure her teachers were staying in the middle of the road & not attempting to influence. (course it still burns me that the school thinks 9 year olds should be that politically connected but again...a battle I'll always have).

Now, here is a case where the teacher is taking things a bit too far.

    http://tundratabloid.blogspot.com/2008/11/...s-ashville.html

I think I'd have to force that teacher out of my school system. And yes...I'd feel the same way if she had been supporting another candidate.

  17. I pay taxes to cover what my child uses in the school system. To force anyone to do community service is a horrid abuse of government IMO. Sounds like another excuse to create another agency to further bloat our government and increase control over the populous. (maybe I should post that in the conspiracy forum LOL)

  18. Abortions aren't the problem...un-wanted pregnancies are the problem.

Guns aren't the problem...idiots owning guns are the problem.

Cars aren't the problem...bad drivers are the problem.

It goes on and on for every "problem" we have in this country. If we can fix the real problem then the percieved problem will go away.
