AceMcbanon September 11, 2002 Share AceMcbanon Member September 11, 2002 I keep seeing people talking about the crass commercialism of the rabid patriotism that has risen up in the wake of Sept 11. And you are right. It is crass, desperatly painfully so, when you look at the magazines touting patriotic belts stitched by genuine tribesmen in Africa for a mere $39.95. How can one not see that as crass? Out of fear the world, America mainly has wrapped itself tightly in their flag, and are fearfully hiding their eyes against, the truth? The inevitable? I don’t know, but I can’t really blame them. Its better to think about Natalie Portman and her red, white, and blue donna karan shoes, rather then the fact that so many people were gone in one fell swoop. Better to think about, the hunting down of the people responsible, rather then the ones who get in the way. But at the end, of all those thoughts, comes one thing, one simple reality. In one day, we all shared a moment, we all mourned, those of us who lost, and those of us who merely watched the loss. We all lost, and that is worth a day of my time spent watching celebrities recount tales of where they were on Sept 11, and an hour long feature on the pets who survived the fall of the twin towers. Or maybe, ill just go outside, and ill take a walk? You can say, “well so many die every day? And this is true. But if the only time you take out of your day to mourn for THOSE lost, or the still lost among us, is on a day of memories, then what does that say about you? I may not agree with many aspects of the post 9/11 political regime. But I can put aside my jaded side for a moment and say. I remember, I remember Sara who was my friend, I remember all those who will forever be nothing more then a name to me. I remember them.
Guest [DOH]TaPe September 11, 2002 Share Guest [DOH]TaPe Guests September 11, 2002 Yeah, people are making 9/11 too commercialized... changing it from patriotism to blind zealotry. We all should take our moment to remember and reflect, sure enough - but we shouldn't change our lives dramatically... we need to move on with our heads held high. Always remember what happened, but move on in your life.
