Looking for an unlocked GSM based phone want to buy

The phone can be a blackberry, Android, or some other smart phone deal. My wife is traveling with some classmates to Italy in a couple of weeks and getting her iPhone 4s unlocked and working for over there is too much of a hassle. Easier to pick up a used phone that is unlocked and is based on GSM. (Verizon and Sprint are CDMA and are not compatible with most international services). The iPhone 4s is but the Verizon unlocking thing will be a hassle.

 

So anyone have something that is GSM and functional for international travel that they want to sell?
