  1. SJ, you're cute:

And those are the first 4 I found in a few minutes--Wired and PC Magazine are both respected tech magazines. Every human being has a unique electrical field, just because yours may not affect the phone as much as someone else's, it is an extremely common problem, and people are doing lab-tests to prove it. Apple, just like MS, Google, and every other tech company in the world CAN screw up from time to time--it's OK to admit it. :)

Apparently there's an HL2 mod that calls itself Counter-Strike Pro and attempts to combine the best from 1.6 and Source into one. :shrug03:

Anyone tried it? I admit, I'm slightly curious . . . If they fixed certain things like grenade damage . . . :shrug03:

  3. I've noticed with non-HD signals during dark scenes there is some ghosting...however, when I plug my computer into it, I'm consistently impressed with the clarity of picture.

I haven't done much gaming on it though, and I don't know if the ghosting issue is present when playing a game with a dark setting--I will plug it in tonight and find out for you before you buy, however. :smillie_smilling:

  4. I think I need to talk to him bout starting on that Mod with me instead.. 6 years?! I couldn't imagine a game taking that long to build.. Depends on his team size though..

    Duke Nukem Forever

And now I'm sad...I miss the Duke :bang:

  5. In my tin-roofed building I get 1018 kbps down and 491 kbps up....the data signal in here is weak compared to what I get down the street outside.

The fastest I've ever downloaded a file on the 3G network here (on my Moto Droid), is around 136 kb/sec, which is pretty fast for a phone, though I don't feel like calculating what megabit connection that is . . . lol :shrug03:

  6. It may not be the beacon of technology at the moment, but my Blackberry Curve can act as a tethered modem, and Sprint doesn't charge me anything extra.... In fact, I pay one price for unlimited everything (data, SMS and MMS, mobile to mobile). The only restriction I have is minutes to landlines. ATT and Verizon's prices for data coverage are ridiculous.

I plan on upgrading to the HTC Evo come December. Unlimited data usage with a mobile hotspot phone. YES PLEASE!

Then you have to pay the $10 "I have an EVO" fee. It's to get on their 4G network. I agree with you though, the data prices for ALL of the carriers in the US are ridiculous.

  7. A subjective iPhone vs Android analysis by Lifehacker. I would say it is fairly accurate from my point of view.

    http://lifehacker.com/5559357/iphone-vs-android-showdown-which-phone-is-best-for-power-users?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+lifehacker%2Ffull+%28Lifehacker%29

Also, I rerooted my Droid and am now running a 2.2 Froyo based Rom and WOW. Is this thing fast. It's like a different phone.

    Told Ya'! :-)

  8. A good deal of those negatives go away with 2.2 (I'm running it on my Moto Droid right now).

My droid now benchmarks right up there with the fastest stock droids (with Froyo alone, it's right below the upcoming Shadow running 2.1). I have also installed an on-demand overclocking app that works very well (still get great battery life as it clocks down to 250 mHz when idle), and with that, I get a hair below the Nexus One (still the fastest stock phone out there) running 2.2. I can get it to go faster if I want, but I don't NEED it.

2.2 also has built in tethering--I've used it, it works. Root your phone and you can have that option without 2.2 (I was using Barnacle previously).

As far as games are concerned...SNES and NES! Hahaha...I agree though, a lot of the Android-specific games do suck, but they haven't been developing nearly as long as the iPhone OS games.

Over-all, I like the iPhone's GUI, I like the feature set, but it comes down to being ridiculously restrictive--which Apple claims it needs to ensure a good end-user experience. I dunno, my wife, who had a lot of trouble easily using the Blackberry OS, and is not nearly as technologically inclined as I am, loves her Droid. She finds it easy to use--which is saying something.

If the iPhone had expandable memory, wasn't on AT&T, and didn't keep coming out with features that other phones already have and call them "revolutionary" (that's just annoying)--I would recommend it to people. IT does look good, and the interface is also good. I just like my Droid better.

Ahh...SJ, doesn't arguing about OSes bring back fond memories? :) ZD, if you want to know where to get 2.2 (Froyo), let me know.

  9. The Windows Phone 7 GUI is awesome--SJ is going to love this--but it's very similar to the Zune in its layout (the Zune HD that is), which I absolutely love. If you look at the interface, it is awesome.

Personally, I think the Windows is a better platform for tablets, because they're planning on using essentially the netbook version of Windows 7 with some GUI tweaks. That means that you can put things like Office and other Windows programs on there which is slick. Now, if they change that, I'm going to have high hopes for Android.

I prefer my Android phone to the iPhone for the following reasons:

1.) no iTunes...I'm with Clue on that..iTunes is HORRIBLE (which is odd, because the GUI on the iPhone/iPod touch is pretty slick)

2.) I can change my battery

3.) I can root my phone and it doesn't void the warranty, nor does it go against the user agreement (that I know of)--heck, I even have my Droid overclocked with WiFi hotspot capability

    4.) AT&T

    5.) SNES/NES Emulators :-)

6.) The ridiculous reasons Apple gives for turning down apps (journalists with sarcastic cartoons can't get on, despite having clean language/gui/pictures?)

7.) I have Flash on my phone

The list is longer, but hey, I also agree with Clue, the GUI on the iPhone is fairly similar to Android--minus the notification bar that I really like. Now, versions before 2.1 weren't so hot, but 2.1 was very good and 2.2 (Froyo) is REALLY good (that's what I'm running on my Droid). SJ, even you have to admit there is a lot more freedom on the Android OS--though that can be a bad thing if you aren't careful with what you download, I agree (if the market says 1 star, don't download it--it's not rocket science).

  10. brace yourselves...

i'd rather get a winmo7 tablet (like mav posted) over an android tablet.

It runs the Zune software, that must be it . . .

Seriously, that's the weirdest thing I've seen today...lol

PS: ZD, that Adam tablet looks slick, I agree

  11. you're right, you can't argue with dual video card switching and 4gb of ram based on her needs.

i'd hate to see what kind of gifts you get for your ladies. "hey honey, here's a dual speed power drill with 1/2" chuck support. happy anniversary!!!1"

You're just jealous because Apple can't do it on the fly like ASUS...and I *SAID* it wasn't necessary :)

OK, OK, I'll stop poking the forum fruit-master.

Seriously, the UL series by ASUS is the way to go in my opinion. Inexpensive, light, and loooong battery life. They sell 'em at Best Buy too, so you can go check on out in person before buying.

  12. While I can't condone an apple product (:P) I can say she won't need 4GB of ram or solid dedicated graphics if you say there will be no gaming occurring on this laptop.

This would be a solid option, imo *edit - just realized this doesn't have a CD drive... not sure if that's a problem.

The new i3 and i5 chips are awesome, but to me it doesn't sound like she'll need that kind of power.

This is actually one of the laptops I was going to suggest....I prefer this one, personally. However, it is a bit more expensive. The cool thing about that is that (aside from beating the pants off the refurbished Mac SJ posted, spec wise) it has dual video card switching. So if she wants to do anything more graphically intensive, she can--if she wants super long battery life, she has it. I'm not sure it NECESSARY for her...but hey, it works...

OH, don't buy anything with less than 4 GB of RAM if you're planning on keeping it for a while. That's my 2-cents..even a Mac, I wouldn't buy without 4 GB of ram.

PS: sorry SJ, couldn't resist the dig . . .
