that's what I always do, buy the vanilla's then OC it, got my 275 oc'd to 720core, and yes; its stable
as do I, and I guarantee that I will!
With the rebate it was the exact same price as the vanilla, so I figured I'd take EVGAs headstart for free, and "maybe" theres actually something different internally with it. Thermal paste or fan quality or something. Shrug.
Looks like those Lynnfield 860s are hitting anywhere from 3.6 to 4.2 for the OC without getting too extreme. Im sure someone will put some some crazy phase-cooled number pretty soon.
I honestly havent deciced how I want to handle it yet.
This thing OCs itself to 3.5 or so on its own while running a single core. OR, I can disable that and OC it manually so that all 4 cores run equally fast.
Hmmm.

it has a story with an ending im pretty sure, but they made it so there are boss runs u can repeatedly do like any other RPG. It's also not out yet, October 20th i believe is the date, so next month. one of the things that draws me to it is that there are like literally hundreds of thousands of weapons that you can get. So im going to always be in search of that one perfect weapon for each class...
Roger that....I can see it now:
Wife: "Hey, are you coming to dinner?"
Laz: "Sure thing babe, just wanna get this one modification I was looking for..."
Wife: "MmmmHmm"
7 hours later:
Wife: "Erm...Gnight"

Tell him Laz said Hiya, and I still say I taught him everything he knows about the p90

Just bought a 275 896MB superclocked for $260 + $20 mail-in rebate.
Yay!
So..
total cost including OS:
About : $1500
After reading a bunch of reviews, the 275 with some OCing comes in just BARELY under the 285 1GB (which is about $90 more). So, I feel that was a decent deal and helped make up for the extra I spent. The goal was to keep it under $1500
-
Hmm. Maybe instead of raiding them, Ill set a 640 to C, and a 640 to D separately.
Yeah, I was going to buy a 285 1GB, but they went out of stock the day before I ordered. I ended up spending a little more than I planned, so I might go with a 260 to make up the diff.
So far, WITHOUT the video card and with the $110 I had to shell out for Vista 64 (till 7 comes out), Im at about $1250
-
Just bought all of the above at Newegg
-
When I checked into it, its giving me Win7Pro (x64 or x86 versions) DVD Download for free. I chose x64
wow

Mmmk. That psu didnt seem to have the 8 pin cpu connex I needed.
So, I made some changes and here is what I have, except for Vid card:
CPU Cooler:

Power:
Modular 850:
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817139011
HDD: 2 of these 640's:
Does any one know much about these? Thinking raid 1 ... with that much data I'd want the redundancy over performance (I THINK).
Not sure though, maybe raid 0 (shrug).
QUESTION: Does partitioning even make any sense any more? Ive regretted it on my current raid0 setup (Win XP) since I ended up with a too-small system C drive.

Mobo: Went back to the midrange EVGA:

CPU Lynnfield 860:

Ram:
Dropped to 4GB ram and upgraded the quality to Dominator Gts with the fan.
Lost 4 GB ram, saved $100 (again - shrug)

So, if any one could answer any of those questions above, thatd be awesome.
Im still planning on the Evga 285 - Out of stock rt now though.
For the Video Card, don't forget that Evga has the step up program... for 90 days or whatever I can trade it in for a 300 series if their out.
-
So...do they? Or is it creative-only for the front extensions?
Thanks!
-
Nice! Grats!
-
So..its co-op. Is the game perpetual? Like WOW it just never ends, or does it have a story and an ending like a single player?
-
ah gotcha.
Did it then? Were you able to run that X-fi out to the case's front sound jacks?
-
does that sound card connect to front case-based mic/phone jacks? Or does Creative still make it so that you have to buy their extension bay thing in order to have any front jacks?
-
Hmm. Can't decide on soundcard and HDDs.
The fatality with the control unit that fits in the slot looks interesting, but too much money.
Whats good nowadays for reasonable $? Creative still having driver issues?
Hows about HDDs?
Looking at this for Cooling:

Not many choices yet for the 1156 socket.
Hope it fits in a 900-2 !

Keeping blue led fans.
Looking at the Corsair powers.
BIG price difference between 850 standard, 850 modular, and 1000 modular.
For $100+ dollars difference, I might just go with the 850 standard (850TX i think) from corsair. Any issues with the 850s only having single rails?
That was a big no-no back when I built this 939 sys.

so, what is left, and will the psu work for my p55

corrected title to "Building Laz a Lynnfield 860-ASAP"
Im buying this in a couple days. 300 gen is out. Any input on the PSU/ram etc?
-
yeah, thanks. I know bout the 300;s but I never buy #1.
The last one I built was an Opteron 165 @ 2.8 (on it right now - stock rating is 1.8 Ghz) on air with an 8800gt dual slot.
I build for:
CPU = 2 gens, vid card = buy two of em in its life.
Im using an OCZ 750watt for this system, never had a problem. But I just dont know what is P55 acceptable. Last time I looked, all I needed to know was # of rails vs. amps/rail. I dont even know what some of the newest codes are..... EMS? 6+1 PWM? 12+2? Does that relate to power? Or is it a description of the shape of the northbridge? Do they still have a northbridge?
-
So far, here is what I am thinking for my P55 rig:
Any input?
Ram:

PSU:
Absolutely NO IDEA WHATSOEVER. This is one of the most important parts of the system I feel, but I don't know what to get or what is compatible.
HELP?
Case:
Looking at a few. They all have different pros/cons, so not sure yet. (Any that come with a PSU will have the PSU sold on craigs or something)

Are there still a lot of problems with the 1TB drives, or are they pretty much stable now?Or should I go smaller?

Fallen Earth
in MMOs
Kind of reminds me of STALKER/Chernobyl. Looks interesting.
That video showed some crazy lag it looks like. I remember when I played Planetside (FPS/MMO) that was their biggest problem. How is it with this game?
-
Thanks Preacher.
Any idea what 12+2 PWM or 6+1 means?

Geez....Things change so fast...
Im Looking at Mobos.
What does 12+2 PWM or 6+1 mean?
Why is the 1156 (P55) running 4 DDR3 channels instead of 6? Does this have a negative impact? (Other than needing to go 8GB instead of 6GB)
Im putting a system together to purchase ASAP. Need some advice plz.

Newegg has the I7 860 Lynnfield at $299 (2.8Ghz, auto-turbos to 3.6 or 3.9 Ghz I forget)
Im looking at that and Evga's P55 Mobo:
