  1. Hey hey!

Started playing some games again over the holidays and it triggered some nostalgia.  I'm so glad to see that GC is still alive and kicking!

I haven't really been active since 2007ish, poked my head in for a bit about 5 years ago.

Used to rock the CS:S servers a fair bit before I was sucked into the MMO world (DDO, LOTRO).  Took advantage of the Steam Holiday Sale and picked up a few new things to play (Banished, Long Dark, South Park: SOT, Prison Architect).

    So what's new around here?

  2. Just to add in a bit about the whole "don't used synth on a high mileage motor" thing.

The only issue you *may* run into with this is oil leaks. Synthetics are smaller on a molecular level and as such they can get through the small wear spaces in gaskets and seals. I've talked to people who put it in a 300k mile car and a had no problems, and I know some that have put it in 100k mile cars and developed leaks(small, and usually a tired crank seal) within days.

I personally run Liqui-Moly ( http://www.liqui-moly.de/ ) in my Scirocco. It was reccomended to me by a lot of VW gurus. I like synthetic because of it's higher heat resistence, there's less chance of serious damage in the event of a massive leak and the motor running dry(before I manage to shut it off).

I've been using it in this motor since I rebuilt it (20k miles ago) and I've had no issues. I race the car often, and it get's driven quite hard most of the time as well as spending long periods at 4-5k rpm(road trips!).

P.S. While on the subject of oils, I swear by RedLine Gear oil. Night and day difference from regular stuff, just make sure you get the right kind depending on the type of syncros in your tranny.

  3. very nice stuff. those BBSs really make the car. You got em in 1600x1200? I'd put one as my background.

I agree, those wheels fit the car perfect!

All the shots are 2:3 image ratio, I can spin one out for you at 1600x1066 if you like. Just shoot me a pm with your email and I'll send it over.

  4. Hey all,

It's been a while since I've posted, but I've been doing a bit of reading lately and noticed that nobody has posted anything in here in such a long time.

    C'mon, let's see some stuff!

He's a couple from a shoot I did on the weekend.(HDR at owners request)

  5. I have a G2 and the blur is just plain horrendous if the flash is off. Did cannon fix this problem and make the shutter faster?

    point in fact

Look at his mouth, he was screaming. Horrible... (its ephemeral)

Ummm..... that has nothing to do with how fast the shutter *can* be ... it's how fast it HAS to be based on available light. P&S camera's generally only go up to 400 ISO ... at that level most indoor/lowlight shots will need either a flash, or a tripod and everybody holding very still. :D

The G5 is and AWSOME P&S camera, one of the better ones out there IMO.

  6. does that work?? I tried to bimd them but they only show up as the F keys in source..??/

Have you got all the drivers installed that come with it?? Mine worked fine right away.

I find that for CS, I'm faster to just punch "B" and the keypad. I'm always in the mood for a different combo and I can't remember what each of the G keys is set to.

  7. I'll have to say there was something rather enjoyable about tearing open 5 fresh untouched 250gb WD sata HD's, lol.

I'm just finishing driver install on number 4. Number 5 is on the bench and awaiting a bios reset ... keeps decting case intrusion .... I dunn wanna pull is apart to swap out the bored :(.

First one on Friday night took me 2 hours for the physical build(sealed boxes to booting it up). The final one last night took me 40 minutes, lol. Running all the wires and the IDE cable was nice by the end, no more thinking, I just new where they'd fit best, haha.

-George -Long weekend: 5 PC builds, 3 shifts at work #2, and 6 hours yesterday morning to shoot my fist PAYING photography event .... I'm pooped :P

Edit: Tearing open the sealed static bags for 5 HD's, lol. Not the drives themselves.

  8. Hahaha, I thought that might get some attention. My brother and I are bulding some camera systems for a local video store chain. Started last night with the first 5. I'm doing the hardware build and windows install and helping with the physical install of the systems, he's doing the networking/software side of it.

I'm actually learning quite a bit from all this.

Oh, and don't drool too much. They may be 775, but they're only 533fsb/2.66ghz, and they have the ever popular ATI 9250 haha.

    -George ..... up too early!

  9. I got to have fun today. :D Only got through two of them, hopefully I'll have time to finish the rest by Sunday night(I work all weekend :()

Hehehe, I like spending other peoples money!

    -George -100% Static free.

  10. Arrrgghhhh, now it's crashing during CS with massive arifacts and a scary squealing/chirping from the speakers ..... did it twice tonight. Once after about 30minutes of playtime and again a few minutes ago after about an hour and a half. GPU temps are fine ~58* tonight. I have a zalman vf700alcu on my 6600gt, it's been on it since february with no problems.

    Arrghhhhh

-George -time for a new computer .... again.

  11. Hey guys.

Here's the deal. My brother has a sort of a contract going on with a local chain of stores. He's been maintaining/establishing their survailence/security systems. They guy he's doing it for has aquired a bunch of new stores and now my bro needs to build up 5 complete new systems.

We use a microjack based system to feed a series of camera's into the computer and it goes via some internet/networking/fancy schmancy system I don't care about to an offsite location where another system actually records all of the video.

I've volunteered to build the systems for him(he does this stuff on the side, so doesn't have much time). I'm only looking after the hardware build and I'll prolly toss windows on it for him. I need these systems to be as reliable as possible.

I'm looking for recommendations based on reliability for motherboards, low end vid card(there is no need for any real performance there, this system will not be used for anything else), PSU, case, HD, and memory.

This doesn't need to be a performance system, it just needs to be reliable ie: big heatsinks that don't require fans or with fans that will last many many years without worries.

    I've got a budget of around $1000CDN per system(Just the tower, don't need mouse/kb/monitor/speakers).

    Fire away!

    Thanks

    -George

  12. very random problem. maybe you can come over to my house sometime this week and i can have a look. i found with that cpu and mobo that sometimes if the heatsink moves a bit it won't make as good contact with the cpu even if temps are reading good.

    Hey, thanks for the offer!

The CPU was actually running hotter today then it usually does. With this new info, I think I'll try reseating the HS. I've got AS5 and whatnot here so I'll give it a go. I've been trying to make it crash again, but no luck yet, lol. I've played CS, run 3dmarks CPU test (3 times over in a row). Run full 3dmark testing. This think is just so random.

I'll see if I can make it happen again, if I have no luck with it I may take you up on the offer Cujo. I'll even bring you some bubble tea!! (Tried it yet? lol)

    Thanks all.

    -George

  13. Sounds like a serious heat issue. If you wait ten minutes and then it boots up, that is a def heat issue with something. Probably the mobo chipset or the CPU.

That's what I thoughit it could be. But it's not really happening when I use the computer(it's only crashed a couple times during CS, but not during any other high stress operations), the main crash when it stops working is when it's idling at night. And even after sitting for 5 hours in it's "crashed" state it wouldn't restart.

The temps are well within range. CPU sits around 36-38 idle, although it's in the mid 40's with this psu(it's keeping the fan speeds lower). It was around 42 while playing CS last night. The north bridge heatsink on this mobo sucks so I've got an 80mm fan on it all the time, it sits around 30.

GPU idles around 48 and peaks around 70 during CS.

Bah. I have a feeling it's the mobo, but only because that's my luck, lol.

    Any way to test it?

    -George

  14. Ok .... got the new PSU yesterday. It's sexy.

Last night ... comp crashed again. Once while playing CS. When this happens it just freezes. Nothing shuts off, it just completely locks up. I have to hit the restart button.

Then this morning it was dead again. G15 still lit up this time, locked at 3:15am and no response from the mouse or keyboard. Couldn't wake the comp up. Restart button did nothing.

Killed the power to the PSU, gave it a minute and tried again. It just wouldn't boot up at all, nothing on the screen whatsoever. The fans all spun up but no other response from the system.

Shut off the PSU main power and left. Just got back about 10 minutes ago and as soon as I turned on the PSU power the comp booted right up. I didn't touch the power switch on the front of the case, it just started on its own when I gave the PSU juice.

Ugh!! lol, It's really irritating because it's so intermittant.

    Anybody have any more thoughts??

    Thanks

    -George

  15. Here's one of my first few attempts at HDR Imaging. I'm having lots of fun with this, but still learning.

    Lemme know what you think.

  16. Can you imagine everyone in the army just jumping up and down with shotties? I can!

Exactly what I was thinking. Or everyone running around with nades and FB's with the pin already pulled, lol.

    Just great!

    lol

I did discover a couple years ago the one time I went to a shooting range. I'm actually a pretty good shot with a pistol. Of my first 18 rounds(first time firing a gun) I got 16 on the target and 12 within 4 inches of each other. (.22 revolver for that one, I had 3 reloads, lol.) I got to try out .22 revolver, .22 semi auto, .38 semi, .38 semi w/wad cutters, 9mm semi, and .357 combat rounds in a revolver. Fun fun!! Overall I think I got about 75% on the targets.
