  1. you shouldn't need drivers for an sata drive unless you're using raid. i've never had an issue installing xp on a single sata drive.

I have 2 x 250GB WD SATA2's that I'll be using in RAID 0 if things go as planned. I'm not worried about backing stuff up until school starts in September, so i figured RAID 0 was the way to go. I shoulda mentioned that fact :spin2:

  2. Where can I find some SATA drivers for my build next weekend? I am pretty sure i need the drivers cause XP Pro (sp 2) doesnt have them, so I need to find them right? Please correct me if i'm wrong, or point me in the right direction if im right...

First build, be patient with me! lol :halo:

  3. Ok, so now my question is this:

I'm going to be out of town next week, but by next weekend my mobo will be in (asus a8n premium) and i will be doing the build. Which retention clip am i supposed to be using that comes with the Big Typhoon, cujo? or cobalt? or anyone else?

    There is LGA 775, K8, P4, K7. Kinda confused...

  4. Yeah... You have to, at some point, just pick a point of technology and run with that. Then's the tricky part: be content with what you're settled on once you get it, because most of the world doenst even have food to eat let alone a pc :( Though, we should not feel guilty for having one, but rather simply enjoy what we're blessed with.

Why would people eat a pc?

    ha :D

main thing to do when buying a vid card is read all the reviews that have the games you play in them because nvidia is good at some and ati is good at others.

I could not have said it better myself...

Or better yet, ask yourself "what do I really want to do"? At a minimum build around your requirements, and splurge if you want (and can affordi it).

Granted, it is neat to blow the socks off of everyone else, but how often will all the bells and whistles be used? Too many people out there (and I work with one) have to be on the bleeding edge, and then complain on how expensive it was - just so that something was a little bit faster.... Something to keep in mind anyway.

Of course, it would be nice to build a future-proof PC, but the way technology changes it can be hard - especially with graphics cards.

Just some of the many things we have to go through to have fun killing each other :biglaugha:

  6. Update!

I have the following sitting in my closet:

Tt Armour case (black, not alumi)

    AMD X2 4200+

    Enermax Noisetaker (600w)

    eVGA 7900GTX

    Tt Big Typhoon HS

    LG 52X CD-R/RW

    2 x WD 250GB SATA2 HDD's

    On the way:

    Asus A8N Premium s939

    AS5 paste

    Waiting to also order:

    2GB (2x1024) RAM PC3200 (corsair most likely)

    X-Fi Platinum or Fatality

The last two can wait for a while, as I'll be transferring my Ram from my old system (for now, if compatible, i hope it is!), and getting by with onboard sound for now. Hopefully the mobo gets in soon! Ordered parts from NCIX and CanadaComputers. Thanks for the advice. I'm sure I'll be asking for more in the future! :D

Cujo: side fan was not available, no need to be jealous! :(

  7. when i pulled off the cpu fan from the old setup, the cpu (socket 754) was stuck to the bottom of the heatsink! there's a lock lever, and it was in the locked position. :11doh:

I've done that quite a few times, and never had a problem with the processor afterwards.

:bang: Ditto, on my sis's pc. I hate that gut feeling when you see the pins bent! Good luck and hope it works out for you!

  8. make sure that the "record" is set to the line that the mic is plugged into. Also make sure the input vol is loud enough (some mic's have +20 dB boost), and that the inputs for whatever program you are using is set to the same as that of the recording in your system's sound options (ie, the mic for both. At least you need to do that for recording programs).

  9. Bose speakers KICK BUTT!!! Havent tried using the headphones, but i have used bose speakers as monitors for guitar/drums/bass/piano and they work beautifully! They're also great monitors for studio recording. I'd say they're my favs. You pay a lot more, but you pay for quality to be sure!

  10. Cujo, i see you're from ON as am i. This pertains to any of the great canadians in the forums, but what are the good sites for ordering parts? I want to build my pc soon, as soon as i get my next cheque i can order parts, so I was wondering where you guys order from? (and dont say newegg, i know they're awesome but they wont ship to me! :bang: ). I have been looking at tigerdirect, but thought that there could be some better sites.

btw, Cujo, i'm from thunder bay so the prices up here are rediculous. :boo:

    any help would be appreciated!
