  1. http://xkcd.com/c287.html

And like me, Playaa, I'm sure you'll try.

I can't see what the waiter's big deal was, it wasn't that hard, especially if you have a good algorithm.

The one thing that bothers me is that he talks about the traveling salesman problem. While NP-hard, it has nothing to do with this special case of the Knapsack Problem. As a teacher would have reminded me, this is actually the subset sum problem, which is commonly fought in cryptography, but since it's still a special case of the Knapsack Problem I don't get so pedantic.

  2. I'm sure work will be glad to hear that I am investing into the company lol. I wonder if I can get reimbursed for the books.

the one RH book was 40 and the other 50, but ill get a basic learning one first.

If not, and you itemize your taxes, you should look into claiming them as an uncompensated business expense, since it's a work-related skill.

  3. Mav beat me to it -- I was looking a while ago, and the RAZR V3xx seemed to suit my desires quite well in a 3G regular phone that tethers through Bluetooth.

Battery life wasn't something I was considering from a laptop tether perspective, because my battery time, in all cases, was limited by my laptop, not my cellphone. If you plan on being able to plug in your laptop, keep a spare phone charger in your laptop bag and plug in your phone, too.

Also, the RAZRv3xx was on a special deal not too long ago, where I could get one for something like $50 with a 2-year contract. You can probably get one pretty cheap.

  4. yeah you would think she'd be insulted and what not for them doing a job like that. They already air brush photos... do people really need more?

Yes. I'm waiting for some kind of quantum black-hole thingie where they can airbrush me in real-time, in the real world.

  5. Wow, this should become the official Linux support forum for the entire world. This is far more helpful than the standard response:

"RTFMan pages, n00b! Lololol. That thing you're trying to do is easy, it only took me five weeks to figure out and two hundred some odd steps."

Another thing to try is running a LiveCD for awhile if you don't have a spare machine. That will at least get you familiar with what driver issues you might run in to if you were to install it and let you dip your feet in the pool before diving in head-first. If you have a machine you can dedicate to the cause, then just go ahead and install it as suggested above. The level of control and the availability of free software is unparalleled, but you will spend more time administrating and it can be intimidating at times. I echo ZD, get a good n00b-oriented book. The O'Reilly (sp?) System Administration book was a good one, it's probably still good (anything with animals on the cover, in general, is a safe bet).

And seriously, the man pages are your best friend, even though you'll get sick of hearing, "N00b, it's in teh man pages n00b!"

  6. You could always make a HOSTS file with the sites you want her to be able to visit and shut off the DNS service (*edit* Actually, I'm not sure you can do this, but you should be able to map all domains to localhost at the end of the HOSTS file, which should work -- If interested, I can test when I get home). That way, it should work with both Firefox and IE. You may be able to do something like put *.*.*.* in the Restricted sites list, and put the sites you want her to be able to do in the Trusted Sites list, but (1) I don't think that will actually stop her from visiting the greater Internet, just shut off active content, (2) It may have unintended consequences (especially letting all okay sites run as "Trusted") and (3) That won't work with Firefox.

You could also set up a proxy, but that requires a greater input of time and effort, plus the proxy has to be on anytime she wants to be on the Innerwebz. The plus side, though, is that it scales well (should you have other children / computers you want to similarly restrict) and when the proxy is down, the Web is down.

All this, of course, assumes your daughter doesn't aspire to be the next Kevin Mitnick.

  7. Come to think of it, I have a Sparc 2 I was going to recycle, but I'll be glad to part with. I'll even pay you $10 to take it. Of course, even without the monitor it's a heavy beast, it'll probably be near $100 to ship everything...

But I think I had Solaris 8.x on it last time I booted it.

I'll even throw in an extra EEPROM with a battery, it's been sitting on the shelf for about two years so it should be in good condition, but no guarantees.

  8. I use the VGA cables on my 32" LCD and it looks great, they allow you to use the native resolution of your monitor

Out of curiosity, is there an advantage to using, say, a computer monitor if you have an HDTV hooked in through component cables?

It depends...I'm not sure if I understand your question though. Do you mean is there a big enough difference between using VGA cables on a PC monitor over component cables on a HDTV? Why not use the VGA cables on your HDTV? If you have a wide screen PC monitor then you can take advantage of generally higher resolutions (but unless your PC monitor does 1920x1200 your HDTV will be more or less the same resolution regardless...unless you have a 1080p TV).

I have a 1080i TV and my understanding is most of the content the XBox puts out is 720p anyway. It seems in my case that I wouldn't gain anything by buying a PC monitor and using the VGA cables, then.

  9. a bunch of stuff about why Linux still isn't ready to uproot Windows as the OS of choice

    yep.

 Yeah, scary enough I have done that (when I ran Red Hat, then later when I ran Fedora) but too much trouble. I did see a neat device that lets you hook up multiple (two or three, I can't remember) hard drives and choose which is the master at boot. That way, you can have a Windows HD and a Linux/Painful HD, no dual-booting, no nonsense, all at the push of a button. They happen to use those and imaging software at the continuing ed. lab at the University of Georgia so they can run classes essentially back-to-back with multiple OSes for each class, and they can apparently blast images to the spare HDs even while the other one's in use. Pretty neat stuff.

  10. I use the VGA cables on my 32" LCD and it looks great, they allow you to use the native resolution of your monitor

  11. aw...I was actually looking forward to seeing you again. I always enjoy you on the message board and even though I only talked to you a tiny bit when I let you use my laptop in the past (and didn't even know it was you) I was hoping to meet you (again).

    :P

Likewise. I'm making it a point to come next year. I was supposed to go to VI's this year, but I ended up getting sick and bailed. The better 31/32s really got a kick out of Cedar Point, so that should be an easy sell.

Now I just have to figure out a way to top the clock case...

as for your cards...if you played 10 years ago it is possible you have cards worth good money. sell them on ebay. However, it's also possible your entire collection is worth $5.

I think the only things of value I still have are some dual-lands, some of which were pretty rare (but are probably not so hot anymore). I think I'll dig them out and go through them this weekend. At least I could reclaim some closet space.

  12. As far as the cables are concerned, you get the component/composite cables with the premium system (wireless controller and hard drive), but not the core system I believe. Also the VGA cables are separate, and I believe more expensive than this add-on is just by themselves. I don't think I will be buying this because I don't have the need atm, but I'm guessing it will sell pretty well since it allows all those connections on the back for easy travel-and-game solutions.

Ahh. That makes sense for core system people then, or people who use the VGA cable. Does anyone in the community here use the VGA cable, or know someone who does, out of curiosity? What's it hooked up to, and how does it look?

It's pretty neat to have everything broken out, I worry that the connector on the board will be damaged one day because there's no strain relief and the sonoragun is pretty heavy. I'm not sure it would really be better, but it's a neat idea.

  13. If you have Disney-aged children (or heck, if you're a Disney-aged child at heart and/or maturity level) and would like to get a Disney Visa card with 1% Disney dollar rewards, if you sign up now you through a referral (direct to the issuing bank, not some third party) you'll get a $25 Disney dollar bonus. I have more details which I will try to remember to post tonight, but feel free to PM me in the meantime if you are interested.

Other benefits of the Disney Visa (as I recall, please double-check):

-6 months no interest on any Disney cruise packages or ticket-inclusive Disney vacation packages.

-Special offers from time to time on Disney vacations (one that recently opened up to the public was pay for a trip, get free dining plan).

-Discounts at Disney-area store (10% off everything at World of Disney store in Walt Disney World)

    -Special deals on Disney junk.

-Special deals on 50th Anniversary stuff/trips.

Granted, that's 1% Disney dollars, not cash back, but pretty much everything Disney takes that (cruise line, resorts, stores, online...) so if you spend a lot of money at Disney or are saving up for a vacation that's as good as cash. With the added benefits, especially on travel, it's actually a good deal.

Again, I'll post more details when I get home. Basically, sign up directly at the issuing bank with my referral information (not some third party), get $25 Disney dollars. And maybe some other bonuses.

  14. Neat. Are the dongle thingies really a problem, though?

Also, do these things really help cooling? It seems that two fans right next to each other running at different speeds might actually reduce effective airflow, but I'm far from an airflowologist (airflowographist?) so I defer to those who may know more.

  15. Of course .... a much simpler way would be to glue the dry sides of two buttered pieces of toast together.

    ... or 2 cats :freak3:

Or a buttered piece of toast and a cat... Wait a minute...
