  1. Is the wireless mouse the way to go???  Shep posted the logitech mx 1000.  I have heard negative things about a wireless mouse for gaming.

And you would drop 2...6800 cards on this board?  I do believe SLI is for 2 boards...right?

I am running an ATI Radeon 850XT PE.  This card is unbelievable.  Do you think nvidia is the way to go?

i have the mx1000 sweet for people with low sensitivities, sli ???

  2. ^^^That's the stuff that seems most reasonable to me.  SiX makes a good point with the RAID setup.  As far as video cards go, I might go w/a nice $200 PCIE card (and get another one later if I feel the need).

Just missing the RAM.  Estimated total would be about $1100

raid= da pimp, as soon as I get cash I'm going for it:P

My opinion?  Complete waste of money.  SLI 6800?  Tell me a game that you wouldn't be able to play at 1600x1200 full throttle when combined with a fx-55.  It should be a game you'd wanna play.

I say screw the SLI.  Get 1 vcard, replace crappy cpu with the fx-55.  Bump the RAM up to 2GB and lose 1 of the hard disks.

Why not just get sli and the fx-55??

Well i ask you how do you intend on getting to 2 gigs, 4x512 or 2x1024?

  3. the fx57 IS NOT based on the older architecture.  it's a san diego(venice with 1mb l2).  the fx55 is also the cream of the crop and the new ones have the dsl technology.  all they're missing is sse3 and the advanced mem controller.  sse3 is useless as of now and the advanced mem controller translates into less than 2% gain.

why do you make a comment about the memory controller when you're not planning on overclocking?  afaik that's the only reason to be worried about a memory controller...

at least go for the 4000+ which is 2.4ghz and has 1mb l2 cache.  those are available just as much as the 3500s are.  same with the 3500 though make sure you get the new core.

Well thats my mistake on the fx57, but its not out yet, that was what I was eluding 2 but I couldn't remember the core name.

Raid setup wont makes your games run better, maybe load times, but no more FPS.

A 90 dollar DVD bruner wont help you out any in games

a 650 WATT PSU is more than enough

You dont need a 70 dollar heatsink.  I can OC a 2.6 to 3.2 on a decent air cooler for less than half that cost.

I havent done much research, but for that price, why not get a dual opteron setup? 2 CPU > 1.

Raid, well its a gaming machine, if you in doom3 cranking along do you realy want to wait for it to load, or far cry which has very very bad map load times which a raid setup would help with. I'm Impatient I went with what should preform.

I chose plextor dvd burners, because if you like cracking or making copys of games plextors are about 10x faster than any other drive out there.

Well that 70 dollar heatsink is the best if you would like to find me something that preforms better with air please do let me know because I haven't looked in about 4 weeks on the air cooling for processors.

    dual opteron

    ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  4. So the question here is:

what's the best upgrade combination (I'm thinking mbd, proc, ram, and video card) for $500?  Flitterkill was kind enough to find a Radeon 9800 Pro for me at $125, but I'll need the other parts too.  Could I get a good performance boost on this kind of budget?  Or should I wait until September and get a really good setup?

well I'm an ati guy and 9800pro is overpriced for its preformance!!! msi 6600gt, but your better off upgrading mobo and getting pcie card

  5. As for that heatsink.... it looks like a monster. Be real sure it will work first. The RAM slots on your board are real close to the cpu. Some people have mentioned difficulties with some of the big Zalman heatsinks being too big and making RAM installation or removal impossible.

IT fits, I have one, and it does clear ram as long as the ram is not super tall.

www.dfi-street.com is a sweet website, great place for help.

  6. Dont waste your money on all that dude.

    1. Why are you getting 3 hard drives? 2 the same and 1 different. ODD.

    2. DO NOT DO SLI, what's the point to get an extra 40 fps in CS:S (lame)

    3. Replace either a hard drive or a video card with another gig of ram

    4. WATER COOL THAT *bleep*

    5. Get a better case. Lain-Li is great for keeping system cool.

    6. With that saved $ from the hard drive and/or video card, get a nice 6ms 19" flat screen :)

well 1, the raptors in raid 0 for system disk, the other is for music and storage :P

    2. 40fps is 40fps

    3. just and another gig, dont cost that much

    4. if you want to take the time, i just did water cooling and unless you want quiet or overclock waste of time

    5. better case, I have one of those, i use it as a stool. strong with great hd cooling. lain-li= OVERPRICED TO THE MAX=RIP OFF

    6. Monitor not included

    :P

  7. After looking at what you have selected I would like to fight you to the death. just kidding

you should realy try and find a dfi or asus board that supports sli. DFI's Nf4 lanparty series is one of the fastest out there and they are priced perty well.

The MSI 6600gt is a better card for price, I have one and I love it. it should overclock strait to the bfg speeds with little problems.

Do not buy the winchester core, the venice core processors are the way to go, they fix many issues with the winchester core and contain a far better memory controler.

You may also want to look into getting a 74gb raptor as your main hd. I have one and it rocks, but then i havent tried a ncq baised hd to tel you how they compare. Im a big fan of seagate hard drives. very reliable. I have dropped several on concrete and they still function.

note all of the depends on your budget... but it is all something you should look into. I would recomend heading over to tomhardware and read reviews on all the products that you intend on buying and then look at the competition. should give you a beter idea on what to look at.

  8. Note I pulled this out of.... When acually desiging a building a system you would usualy read reviews on the hardware that you would put into the systems. I put this toghther in about 5 min. all parts were from newegg...

yes fx55 or 57 would be nice to have but they are an older architecture and their memory controler is second rate. That is why i chose the venice core processor.

The processor is new, the clawhammers are baised on older fab scale. venice is the latest, but not the fastest. near the end of the summer there will be amd dual cores. which if you dont build your system untill then is the way to go.

  10. If price does not matter and the "person" building it can do it. Building your own is allwasy the best way to go, if you want I can whip up a few systems for you. AMD (faster for games btw) or Intel
