DVR to Computer (then to DVD)

Has anyone copied anything from their DVR to their computer? w/out the use of a capture card?

I have the SA 8000HD DVR. It has the firewire ports, and was wondering if anyone has used these? I am really in no mood to rip apart the DVR box and take out the HD, was a pain when I did it with my last one, and really dont want to go through it again.

Haven't had to try it, I just run it back through a VCR/DVD Recorder, which is by far the easiest way if you have the pleasure of owning one.

But there are a couple of things that I want to port straight to my PC so I may give the firewire option a whirl later today and see how it goes (off the top of my head I have the same DVR unit)

Acid,

I have a replay Tv unit which has an ethernet port which allows for the transfer of the recorded shows at original recorded quality. Given, they are huge files (1-2 Gig per every half hour) but worth it.

I also have a cheap-o 60 dollar DVD player/recorder that I bought from Wal-Mart a couple of weeks ago which lets me burn to DVD-RW's. I have used it a few times and moved the movies or shows from that to my PC and then converted and edited as needed.

This is probably the simplest and cheapest way. Not to mention the DVDRW basically made VCR's obselete as you can now record on DVD. The DVD recorder was cheap but allowed editing from within the recorder. You can do A-B removing, so commercials can be taken out one pop at a time.
