EDITORIAL:

Hard times for UT2K4... NaliCity is gone, Unreal Playground is a shell of it's own self. The official Epic forums look generic having lost all the previous UT skins in an upgrade I guess (or by choice) and the UT forums are an absolute mess, especially the maps and mods forums where dead links are the rule rather than the exception. The server browser itself is error-prone these days and may be down for hours/days at a time.

Searching for ONS standard server games shows maybe 20 servers, 40-ish if you uncheck the box. And that's world-wide. UT3 not much better. Hard to believe how much UT3 hurt the Unreal community. I praised the game when it released but that was the game itself, not the god-awful server browser, menu system, server hosting, and everything else Epic dumped on to push it out the door. Although many point to it as a classic example of a game engine demo masquerading as an actual game I'll point out that the publisher was Midway who probably forced Epic to release before they wanted to on the account of them going bankrupt/out of business. Couple that with the concurrent work on Gears of War and Epic just let it go. They made bank on the 360 and are making super-double bank on the iPad of all things They did stand by the game and support it, finally patching it up with the Titan release but ultimately a case of too little much too late as Xbox360 pushed to the fore-front of gaming.

Those remaining ONS servers are almost entirely filled (and played) with spammy maps, goofy vehicles, and too many players. Reading through Unreal community forums is just as depressing.

Did you know that when you search for ONS-Urban-LE.ut2 the second link in Google is *our* redirect server with the compressed file? It really is that bad. I thought I had a local copy stashed in my UT archives and was surprised I didn't. Equally surprised I had to download our compressed version and unpack it to actually get a copy of it. I know the game is old now but the sheer expanse of the disappearance of maps, mods, archives, etc. is amazing.

That said. Be safe and archive maps and mods if you like them. There are no guarantees anything sticks around forever (including our archives in fact - we back up our forums very regularly but not so much the maps and other stuff on the web server). This game server is a gift from TypeFrag; if it goes, the server goes. Not much I can do there given how little it is played.

If any of the old regulars want a particular map on just let me know. There are no reserves; I'd be pleased as punch if I actually have to concern myself with such a thing in the future. As this is a legacy server I'm fine with dolling out admin privileges to any of the old hands provided they were once a GC member. Again just PM me so I can get you hooked up.

I'm considering putting up a 12 player 6-8 spec slot old-timey back-in-the-day UTComp competitive server with all the LE ONS maps I can get my hands on (and the usuals as well). If that ever goes live I'd email some of the old folks in the ONS community to let them know they have a free server to use for nostalgic competitive play.

And if I get really ambitious, a FREON server ain't out of the question as well.

Post up any bugs, tweaks, maps, mods, etc. you want added or dealt with.
