But it's main function is to allows for the excess gas vapors in the fuel tank to be burned through the engine instead of just allowed to leak out in the atmosphere. They can go bad. Depending on the vehicle and warranty, it might be replaced for free. See your dealer. If not, they are realitively inexpensive to replace.
