  1. if you're making swap drives it doesn't make sense to make them raid 0. you want them to be raid 1 so if one dies you can swap in a new one.

They aren't swap drives per se. They are in the enclosures to keep them cool. I have another machine setup with 2 identical enclosures that is a media server. I have swapped the raid array into that machine to transfer BT media but the enclosures are mostly for the cooling purposes.

  2. Yeah, it is worth it. The lower the timings at the PC3200 rating, usually the better the Overclocks you can get later. This isn't always the case but is helpful.

ZD is definitely right about this one. Timings don't matter to the average user it only really matters in gaming and overclocking. I don't know if you plan on overclocking but you definitely plan on gaming so go with the ones with better timings. Memory with better timings is also more likely to come with heat spreaders. Because it is higher quality ram it will probably get a better frequency overclock too.

  3. definitely maybe:
Windows running on a Mac is like Windows running on a PC. That means it’ll be subject to the same attacks that plague the Windows world. So be sure to keep it updated with the latest Microsoft Windows security fixes.

i get the impression that its a natively running os, not an emulator. if that's the case, fps *should* not be affected.

You also have to take into consideration fixes and how they might run on that hardware. Say for instance there is a bios flash that you need for that particular revision Intel board to be able to run source on it properly.

  4. Patriot Memory is the memory that I most commonly recommend to customers in store if Corsair is not something they are interested in. I have only ever had 1 stick of Patriot that was doa as compared to countless sticks of Centon, ultra, even some mushkin and Geil. I actually run Patriot memory in my laptop right now cause it was so amazingly cheap. The cost to efficiency ratio with them is astronomically good. So yeah, Patriot is a pretty good choice for memory. It isn't Corsair or OCZ but it is still some pretty darn good memory.

  5. I think Fatty will benefit more from upgrading his hardware (mobo, cpu, etc) than buying a minor ugrade in videocards. His limitation right now is the older athlonxp technology. He could probably resell it here and recoop some of his cost and pick up a decent athlon 64 setup.

Or turn it in to a media server. That is becoming a popular alternative.

  6. Until you can figure out the answers to these questions, I really dont see a point in unbanning.

Is it ok to F-bomb in GC servers when your clock says a certain number?

Is it ok to F-bomb in GC servers when the number of players takes a dip?

Is it ok to F-bomb in GC servers when the admin is in spec or disconnected?

Is it ok to F-bomb in GC servers when you dont like the map?

Is it ok to F-bomb in GC servers when you "think" the admin made a choice you dont agree with?

Is it ok to F-bomb in GC servers when you "think" the admin is speccing you?

That is the best thing I have read all day.

  7. Hey man, $0.99 still gets you a Junior Bacon Cheeseburger :)...hehehhehe. I would have checked ebay but Websense at work blocks it. I can get everything under the sun. Let me know what you are interested in and I will see what I can do.

EDIT: Come to think of it, I'm going to go get a Jr. Bacon right now.

  8. Could be upgrading to 7900GTXs too. Depending on what model 7800GTX it is it could also have 512MB of memory. No game on the market today can really use that much video memory but it helps with bragging rights.

I have an eVGA 6800 ULTRA 256MB card up for sale if someone wants to make me a good offer on it. The card was used in a display machine at work but I have verified it is fully functional. I'm A+ certified if that puts anyone to ease about the functionality.

Preacher, do you still want DOOM III: Resurrection of Evil? I can get you a copy for like $12 +shipping brand new. I work at a computer store and the software is discontinued so its cheap for us. I could ship it however you want but $4.XX priority is probably the best. Employee Discount on the software is $11.26 but then theres sales tax which brings it to $12.02. Lemme know if you are interested.

  9. Ok. The system is built but the watercooling isn't done yet cause I'm still working on a good way to mount the radiator and still have the case be LANable but the components are below.

    COOLERMASTER STACKER

    ASUS A8N32-SLI DELUXE

    AMD X2 4200+

    CORSAIR TWINX2048-3500LLPRO (2GB)

    EVGA GEFORCE 7900GTX 512MB

PC POWER & COOLING TURBO COOL 510 SLI

    CREATIVE SOUNDBLASTER X-FI

    74GB WD RAPTOR (OS DRIVE)

2X SEAGATE BARRACUDA 7200.9 300GB DRIVES (RAID 0 IN SATA SWAP ENCLOSURES)

    PLEXTOR SATA DVD BURNER

    WATERCOOLING COMPONENTS

    SWIFTECH STORM CPU BLOCK

MAZE 4 ACETAL LOW PROFILE GPU WATERBLOCK

    LAING D5 PUMP

    BIX III RADIATOR

Right now the unit is overclocked to the memory's native frequency of 218 but I plan on going crazy once the watercooling is done.

  10. The A8n32 board should only be used if you are absolutely sure what you are doing. With all the bios variables and the adjustments you need to make you should know your way around a bios pretty well. That being said, 8 phase cooling and x16 sli are nice but you arent going to see performance from the sli with current generation games. That definitely didnt stop me from buying one though, so if you can find it and afford it, pick one up. Otherwise get the A8N-SLI Premium. The Premium board has heatpipe cooling for the northbridge as opposed to a fan and it has extra sata raid controller (SIL) i believe. Get the Premium if you dont get the A8N32
