Posted on this topic a while ago, but I need some more help. I’ve read a fair number of reviews that suggest that the nVidia 7800gs is a piece of junk. Lots of problems with blue screens, freezing, short life, mobo conflicts… Do any of you have any experience with this card? Is it working? Any mobo conflicts? Driver issues? What brand? Any with XFX @ 440 MHz or eVGA @ 430MHz? I can’t upgrade to a PCIe system yet, and my ATI 9800 pro (flashed to xt) isn’t quite making me happy so I’m considering the 7800gs. Thoughts?

I was trying to post into the ban request thread Admins, I'm new to the forums, and my GC membership is not yet finalized (requested the xfer by paypal but not yet gone thru) so you might want to double check this. On the CSS PROJECT MAYHEM server @ approx. 3:30 A.M. on 2006.08.27 a player with the following status info… # 651 "purple haze420" STEAM_0:0:9884666 11:56 84 0 active … was TK'ing. The attacks were multiple and blatant targeting several different team members, using a knife, pistol and nades repeatedly. He was warned verbally and via in game chat without any response. He left the server shortly there after seemingly due to the large volume of positive requests to observe server rules. Please use this info as you see fit and thanks for a great gaming environment. The recent steam updates that have disable ‘mani’ and the resulting flood of ‘punks’ that survive past their first have made me appreciate the GC servers & community all the more. Thanks again…

This is the real issue. Saving, what - $50 per month, isn't worth the fines they'll hit you with for "stealing" services. They’ll add up how many months you’ve lived there and multiply it by some ridiculous “loss� per month charge. Don’t ask me how I know this. Is it a private or public network? If it's private, the owner (a neighbor?) may not mind you piggybacking off his connection. Then again, his agreement with his ISP may preclude that as well. Should we take up a collection to help NOFX with the ISP costs? Seriously though, is there any way to get your employer to pay for it? Do you work in technology field? Even if they won’t pay for it you may be able to claim it as a write-off on your taxes – unreimbursed employee expense – if you do any work from home via that connection. Just some thoughts…

The amount of traffic they carry is unreal! I'd find it unlikely that they just blindly monitor packets w/ a sniffer like ethereal. It is more likely the do some intelligent traffic analysis to try and determine patterns of use that can direct their attention more precisely. On the other hand I met a lady who used to work for the Chinese government and in her town of 500,000 or so, they employed 25,000 people just listening in on regional phone calls! No lack of labor force for them! Sounds like you are more of an *ix guy than me – I know just enough to be dangerous there. Most of my experience programming is then Windows world. Is there a version on nmap for Windows? I’d like to do some tests.

I have 3 high CFM fans in my rig and the office sounds like a server room I've checked out everything offered @ newegg (great vendor!) but nearly every one of them has significant shortfalls according to the reviews: "Uses internal batteries", "shorts out & smokes", "randomly doesn't start fans!". Being gamers I'm thinking most of you have pretty hot rigs and have dealt with this problem before. I don't need auto adjusting controller - just something to allow me too quell the noise when I'm not gaming. An integrated card reader would be nice too, but not required. Thoughts? Thx in advance - I love GC!

Thanks for the insights. Sounds like the advice boils down to two points: 1. Don,t blow too much money 'cause I'm not gonna get too much performance gain. 2. Make sure the card I pick will actually outperform my current 9800pro/xt Thanks again...

Thanks to all. I was able to change the values in the autoexec.cfg and they took effect in game. My confusion is this. The file was not read only, but the CFG directory was. I couldn't remove the RO attrib. on the directory no matter what!?!? I'm not a computer novice (even if it seems like it) so I'm kinda stumped on this directory attrib. issue. Any how, I got the values changed and it works better. Thanks again to all.

Any thoughts on how the ATI x1600pro & the nVidia 7800 gx compare performance wise? I've been kind of souered on ATI cards but the 7800 is twice the cost of the x1600.

Am I the only one for whom CSS options won't save? I try to change my in game name, my cross hair color or size... most any of the options and when I restart CSS - they've changed back to the previous values. I know I'm an idiot, but somthing seems amiss here. Thx in advance for any help...
