  1. so are ya guys using the RC as your main OS now or are ya'll multi? thinkin of replacin my vista 64x prem. w/ it; jus wondering if I do, i'll have to reinstall all my programs again such as all the adobe programs, anyone know if i do?

i am both on my media centre and my main rig. my dad is using it on his main computer. he came from xp. so far he likes it except he's had to compatibility mode install a few of his legacy programs. as far as he's told me he's got most everything up and running.

i believe you can upgrade from vista to 7 fairly seamlessly. i went from beta to rc pretty easily. just had to re-install my sound driver.

  2. So, I have learned that Alienware puts out great systems but COMPLETELY FAILS TO SUPPORT THEM AFTER LAUNCH.

you're surprised by this? i've found most big name companies are very irresponsible when it comes to driver support. most will put out the initial drivers and never update them. they just want you to buy new product.

have you tried vista64 drivers? extract them to a folder and then install them through device manager.

by comparison my asus laptop that came with a xp pro to vista upgrade has a full set of vista32 drivers but not much in the way of 64bit ones. most of the 32bit drivers were released shortly after vista in 2007 with no updates since.

you're generally on your own with driver support for things that didn't exist when you purchased. that said, you should be able to find drivers to make your stuff go. just figure out what the physical components are and then search other places. don't expect the oems to keep up to date.

  3. I got the ISO's for the RC from MSDN today. I have yet to do anything with them.

Apparently I can upgrade from the Windows 7 Beta to the RC or at least that is what one of the guys at work told me he did.

i did the upgrade from within windows without issues. just had to re-install my sound and vid drivers.

  4. Have any of you bought after market upgrades, such as a catback exhaust, cold air intake, or a new computer chip to boost the horsepower of your car? I wanted to know if you actually notice a decent performance gain to where it would be worth buying it, and whether it was hard to install like the cold air intake yourself or if you need to have someone else install it all. Do those things cut back on your gas mileage pretty hard though?

cobb access port for my car cost about 800 bucks. stage 1 flash made a significant difference in performance and no added fuel consumption.

  5. btw, i found this cpu does run hot. but mostly when overclocked. ;)

    how hott? O.o

well, i'll probably get an aftermarket cooler soon so probably get it down some more, hopefully around 15-20 idle...it idles at 35 right nowv

how cold is your house? if you want to idle around 15-20 then you'll be sitting in 10c temps... after market cooler won't help your idle at stock much. but it sure will cool it better oc'ed.

  6. Are impreza's fast? Im talking The 2.5rs....Any idea? Could it beat an 03 lancer? Just wondering over here

only just saw this now. 2.5rs should be able to beat a lancer.

geek, the north american version makes 305hp/290tq.

with the stage 1 tune i believe i'm somewhere around 335hp/330/tq. that's obviously not at the wheels. gonna dyno it soon but i think i'm somewhere around 260/300 whp/wtq.

went to my first track day the other day.

  7. What are you running right now? Why can't you run that for the time being?

i already bought the windows vista 64bit so imma be using that for now. unless W7 is really worth upgrading too later on, then possibly an upgrade

return the vista. windows 7 RELEASE CANDIDATE will be coming out in the very near future. in beta form it is already faster/more stable than vista. what we're saying is use your existing windows xp for now and then you can download and install windows 7 release candidate and run it until final comes out. then buy it.

yes, windows 7 beta has media centre as it's essentially windows 7 ultimate. there will be different versions on release like xp home/pro.

at this point i would not buy vista for anyone. get them xp and then upgrade them when 7 comes out. i've already sold all 3 of my vista licenses.

  8. Ur teh noob...

You are, however, correct. I should have looked up...so sorry to offend with my arrogant misleadings...

However, the rest of what I said stands true.

:) i didn't look it up. just based on my general knowledge of the way monitor companies seem to function. they're all going 16:9 now and coming with hdmi.

  9. 60hz for shutter glasses I think is acceptable, but I bet the flicker effect would be less with a LCD then what you get with a CRT....maybe

maybe. i was like 16 at the time so i probably didn't have it all set up correctly. i recall it looking really good playing nhl hockey but i didn't use them much cause it hurt.

  10. i tried the whole 3d gaming thing with my tnt2 and it was horrible. just painful on your eyes. imagine staring into a fluorescent light for 5 minutes. or staring at a crt at 60hz for 5 minutes. your eyes will just ache.

this new one promises to be no better. plus you need a 120hz monitor to even get above 30fps...

  11. What he said...mostly. I don't think his 22.5" LCD is 19 x 12...Even if it is, the 260 core 216 (which can be had for $160-180 if you look hard enough) should run just about anything at playable rates with almost all the eye candy turned on. I'm running an MSI 260 core 216 at 19 x 12 and it does just about everything really well (except for Crysis of course).

Still, for the prices, I would prolly do what preacher suggested and spend approx $250 on the ATI 4890 instead of an SLI setup unless you are going to up the rez with a different monitor. That 4890 benches out to be a really sweet card, esp. with the AA and AF turned up at higher rez.

Corsair makes outstanding single rail PSUs now. I also think that 850 is a good bet for the money.

*aside...Cujo, what's up with that enermax?

    http://www.google.ca/search?q=Asus+VH226H+...t=0&start=0

noob. 1920x1080. figured as much. why else would they make it 22.5 and not just the standard 22"??

what do you mean what's up with that enermax?

btw, i'd probably get the 4890 too.

right now i'm trying to sell my 2x4870s so i can get 2 of the 2gb versions. that would allow me to crank everything in gta 4 and get rid of the turn around chop that i get right now. they're really only necessary in pairs though as a single card can't drive the kind of settings that would allow 2gb to be used.

  12. i've got a similar system and it's complete overkill for css. well at 3.8ghz anyway. i avg over 200 fps and haven't gone below 100 yet. this is with EVERYTHING full at 1920 including hdr.

as far as other games yes it would be a solid system. i've disabled ht since barely anything uses 4 cores let alone 8. a single 260 would be a bottle neck in that system but it should still be fast enough for just about any game. i assume that monitor runs at 1920x1080 since it's a 22.5" screen based on the model number. too lazy to look it up. anyway, a single 260 should be fine for that res.

to answer your power supply question, no i would not use the 750 when you go sli. for now it's fine. since i've gone crossfire (2x 4870s) i can hear my 1000w psu spin up pretty high. i'd never heard it before. i would at minimum go to an 850w. if you plan on doing any overclocking then i wouldn't get one less than 1000w.

edit - finally got around to updating my system config:

    ASUS P6T

    Intel i7 920 @ 3.8GHz w/ 1.35v

    3 x 2048MB PC3 12800 OCZ Platinum XTC @ 1528MHz (7-7-7-20) w/ 1.6v

    2 x Sapphire HD 4870 1GB

    SoundBlaster X-Fi Platinum

    2 x WD1500ADFD RAID 0

    4 x WD5000AAKS RAID 0+1

    Tt Armor Aluminum Tower

    Enermax Galaxy 1000W DXX

    DELL 2405FPW, 1905FPW

  13. Just picked up a set of these for my main rig as my surround system is on my home theatre setup and I've been using USB powered speakers for a while now. These things are amazing. Great bass even in the basement on a carpeted cement floor and the sound quality is great right up to max. Only downside is they connect to USB therefore bypassing your sound card. I've got a cable going from my X-FI to the input plug though for when I want to use in game X-FI effects. Though I actually think GTA 4 sounds better with the USB connection (which makes sense since it's digital). I picked them up for $100 CDN at Tiger Direct. Regular $419 or something ridiculous like that. Anyway, if you're in the market for a set of speakers for your desktop/laptop don't waste money on those three extra speakers, two of which you'll never actually set up behind you. For 100 bucks there's nothing better out there.

  14. just went crossfire. i get 483fps in css stress test with everything cranked at 1920.

Meh. I wanna see tri. Go big or go home! I mean, 483fps? You may as well sell that computer while you can.

:) jk - though it does seem like overkill. 280fps wasn't enough?

bought the second card to play gta4 better. seems i'm now cpu limited in that game. which is surprising. it's a tough game to run.

btw, that's another benchmark we can run. gta4 has a benchmark feature.
