Save a couple bucks on the raptor

If you buy if from the store they have a coupon for the back to school sales. Heck shoot me an aim when you get on.

Just giving folks a heads up. I almost picked up one of these last night at my local best buy because of the price. Almost to the register when I saw it is only 8MB cache and not the normal 16MB cache. Instead I just ordered the 16MB at Zipzoomfly.com for a few dollars more.

  2. Yeah router is key really. I have the same router (ver2, stock firmware). Major factor with it is what kind of walls you have. My old apartment was single level with concrete block & plaster walls and going through 2 walls to another room (20 feet) the connection would drop occassionally. The new apartment is a duplex with wood studs & drywall. The wrt54g reaches the entire apartment with the router in upstairs southside and laptop downstairs southside.

  3. I never had much luck with Seagate drives. I have had 100% failure with them. Course I only owned 3 of them in my time before I switched to Western Digital and haven't gone back.

Heh. Just the opposite for me. I used to be a WD fan, but since I had 2 backup drives fail I tried Seagate. Only WD's I buy now are Raptors. I use the Raptors exclusively for boot drive and Seagates for data.

Not serial so they aren't the fastest horse in the stable. But if you are like me and have external enclosures lying around then these are hard to pass up.

P.S. Anyone remember the good ole days when Outpost.com had free 2day shipping & $5 overnight shipping on all components. It was nice to get those 40lbs cases next day for $5. They still use Airbourne Express tho.

  5. Fresh install of XP on a older machine, AthlonXP 2500+ on a Abit NF7-S2G mobo w/ 1gig pc3200.. I intalled and got SP1 on it, but the NVIDIA nForce2 AGP Host to PCI Bridge under the device manager says "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)" So I cant install the video card drivers !!! ARG!!

Anyone ever have this problem and can help me out???

After installing WinXP did ya install chipset drivers before trying to install vid card drivers? That would be my guess. nvidia.com

  6. Here are the 1MB & 2x1MB cache prices (plus some 2x512) I found while getting ready to upgrade. Newegg finally started really dropping their prices on 1MB & 2x1MB yesterday. Some dropping as much as $200.

    3700+ 939 1MB $109 newegg.com

    4000+ 939 1MB $139 newegg.com

    X2 3800+ 939 2x512KB $154.00 zipzoomfly.com

    X2 4200+ 939 2x512KB $184.00 zipzoomfly.com

    X2 4400+ 939 2x1MB $250 newegg.com

    X2 4600+ 939 2x512KB $245 buy.com (sold out - see Penty's post above)

    X2 4800+ 939 2x1MB $355 zipzoomfly.com

    X2 4000+ AM2 2x1MB $184 zipzoomfly.com (still $389 at newegg)

    X2 4200+ AM2 2x512KB $190 zipzoomfly.com

    X2 4400+ AM2 2x1MB $243 buy.com (sold out)

You know, its only $100 more for that 2.2 Ghz 4400+ with the 2MB L2 cache!.........

    How about $5 more? :D

  7. Hmm.... maybe time to investigate my registry to see what Setpoint actually does.

Well, Logitech stores settings in an xml file (C:\Documents and Settings\LOGINNAME\Application Data\Logitech\SetPoint). Changing that file doesn't cause changes to take effect. Change isn't noticed until Setpoint.exe does some magic.

But I did find this http://www.logigamer.com/. DLing now.

Update: I don't think I'll be installing this. Looks like a lot of probs for mx518.

Update 2: Setpoint version 3 is supposed to enable profiles for certain mice. However, I can't find out which mice they are. I installed Setpoint 3 and it doesn't offer it for mx518. Logitech G5 does have profiles as seen here.

Update 3: Just found uberOptions and it works for my mx518. You must have Setpoint installed. It basically adds more options to the setpoint control panel including the ability to set options based on program. You can have 1 set of mouse buttons for all time, another set for Firefox, and another for UT. Works good so far.

  8. For my logitech mx518, I just use Logitech Setpoint to program my other buttons to keystrokes. Then in UT just set keybinds to those keystrokes. You just have to do it before you start up UT and then when you finish playing change them back. I just leave mine in UT mode all the time. Would be nice if you could save the settings as profiles and then swap between them. Hmm.... maybe time to investigate my registry to see what Setpoint actually does.

  9. Basically, they needed to simplify production thereby cutting costs. At one point this year they were making 754, 939, AM2 (2x512K L2 cache), & AM2 (2X1MB L2 cache) processors. They are transitioning to only making AM2 (2x512K) processors. 939 will be first to go, then AM2 (2x1MB), then 754. 754 is hanging around for the Semprons.

    Here is the shipping calendar.

The AM2 (2x1MB) processors (4000, 4400, 4800) are going to be in short demand, so I don't see price dropping on those quickly. Yep, they aren't even listed in the official price drop list.

  10. Yeah AMD had to make a move to AM2. They needed to catch up in the short term. They saw Conroe coming and mini-cores are still far down the road. They needed to make the change from 939 to AM2 as a stop gap. AM2 adds DDR2. Intel been doing it for a while now. To do this AMD moved the memory interface from Northbridge to the CPU. That necessitates the change in socket & CPU. If they go to a smaller process (65nm from 90nm), then they can do a lot in the short term to stay on Intel's heels (including price cuts). Will be interesting to see where AMD is when Intel comes out with Quad-Cores.

  11. My main gaming rig may eventually see an Intel for the first time ever but for the most part it is still gonna be AMD for me. It just comes down to total upgrade cost. Switch platform or upgrade current. 2 of my other systems (939's) will be getting X2 upgrades at the end of the month.

BTW, I wouldn't go lower than an E6600 (L2 cache).
