Rashad April 22, 2006 Share Rashad Member April 22, 2006 I recieved this email from the university yesterday. Recently there has been an outbreak of mumps in Iowa that has spread to surrounding states, including Wisconsin. Many of these cases have occurred in college students, including students who have previously received mumps vaccine. While we have no evidence of cases on campus as of today, that status can change at any time. Further information will be made available as needed on the UHCS website. Mumps is an acute viral illness and is spread from person to person through the air or by direct contact with saliva or infected droplets. Commonly the cheek and jaw area swells on one or both sides within the first two days of illness. In males, the illness can also cause testicular swelling and pain. Symptoms also may include fever, headache, muscle pain and general feeling of discomfort. If you are experiencing these symptoms, please call UHCS to schedule an appointment with a health care provider. Students are advised to check their immunization record for verification of the month & year when they for received their two Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccinations, with family &/or their health care provider. It is recommended to receive the MMR if vaccination cannot be verified. Hopefully, the mumps won't reach my campus, but it's just a matter of time. MrDuke April 22, 2006 Share MrDuke Member April 22, 2006 If you received your vaccinations (properly), you are 90% covered even if you were intimate with some mump-infested tundra hog that had good lookin' ankles as her only positive attribute.
