Audio/Video People

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a new receiver for my home theater. The requirements are that it must come from Best Buy so that I can take advantage of their 18 month no interest deal and it needs the ability to upconvert (I think that's the right term) analog signals for video switching...iow, I want to be able to use it as a video switcher...have all of my peripherals go into the receiver and only one output to the TV, either HDMI or Component Video. I'd prefer to stay in the $500 to $600 range if possible.

I've been looking at these three models:

Denon AVR-1908

Harmon Kardon AVR-247

Pioneer Elite VSX 90TXV

Anyone have any reasoning for/against any of those models? Thanks for the input.

They all look nice. I don't think audio has really advanced in the past decade. I use and 10 year old JVC head and it sounds great and has been good to me. Hook ups are what you need to pay attention to, unless you are actually going to have 7+ drivers in your living room. :prplwacko: Get the best one to suit your needs while thinking about the future. Kudos to you for getting a real head unit and not one of those all in one units with color coordinated speakers.

I hear you with the Best Buy, I only have a few more payments on my Panasonic 50". Some of my friends say they would never spend that kind of money on a TV. To me it was well worth it (and with no interest is a big plus and I mean big), totally changed my viewing experience and is even better with good sound. What speakers are you going to be driving with the new head?

So far I only have the front L, R, and Center channels and a sub. You can see my setup here:

The R+L channel inwalls are these:

and the center channel is this:

I plan on adding some either wall mount or inwalls to the rear of the room for a 5.1 system in the near future. This unit will replace the AIWA system you can see in my setup. Biggest problem atm is my windows rattling, they are 50+ years old and when I turn up the volume on the inwalls it rattles the panes in the windows. New ones coming next week!!!! Its just for living room fun. Eventually I'll be setting up a dedicated home theater and have to go all out with preamp, dedicated amps etc....

if you haven't already bought it, take a serious look at Yamaha recievers. They are, by far, the best bang for your buck. You can get a 7.1 TrueHD receiver from Yamaha, save yourself some cash, and easily squish the sound quality of comparable receivers.

for instance, is pretty sweet. I've used Yamaha, Sony, Onkyo, and had experience with Denon, Pioneer, Harmon Kardon, and Bose....by far, I like the Yamaha's the best. I'm using a fairly inexpensive surround sound system now (a Yamaha 5.1 reciever with bundled speakers) and it has MUCH better sound quality than my Dad's Bose/Onkyo setup costing literally half as much (thanks to an open-box deal).

Take a serious look at Yamaha. Aesthetically they're not the prettiest receivers, but sound-wise they're hard to beat, and they're not so over-priced.
