Sound issues - Win8

When I connect/disconnect headphones/headsets/amps from computer I have to either restart programs or re-boot the computer.

Is there anyway I can change sound settings in control panel and not have to mess around with volume control properties so that computer automatically detects what's in/out without having to restart/reboot?

My old XP could do it, surely Win8 should be able to?

Thanks.

Check if you had installed conflicting drivers. Install/reinstall genuine drivers and utilities. Simply find out if there is some sort of client/user set up, system might resets itself because you need to physically click to remember your settings.

I don't use Win8, I use Win7, but many applications let you set 'Default Sound Device' for audio input/output.  You should be able to just change your default device on the fly and have it switch over no problem... but some applications don't have the option to specify sound devices.

Or it could be a driver issue I guess like Cat is sayin'.
