I should note that I was formatting a 25gb C: partition and the rest of the 160gb was left unformatted until I did it later from Windows. But that sholdn't matter more than a few seconds under quick format.

I can only think that your high FSB speed must be the answer.

Your drive, it must be an 8mb cache model? What brand?

Did you overclock your wristwatch? :P

hehe i used the microwave timer. its a maxtor 40gig 7200rpm, 10ms seek, 2mb buffer ide drive. i guess the high fsb is the main reason im installing faster then a raid setup from an A64. anywho, i thought it would be the other way around.

my main hd.

my 2nd drive is 5400rpm and is slow.

-edit- now that i think about it, in another thread you have been using auto'ed dram timings and i use tighter manually set timings, along with the fsb is prob what made the difference. interesting...

If I would have had to guess then I would have said your system would be about 16 minutes or so.

The only other thing happening is that the RAID controller software is being installed too. Even though it does access the floppy drive that can't take more than 30 seconds.

Well, maybe you should buy a pair of Raptors in RAID 0 and install in 4 minutes.

Speaking of overclocking, after setting my RAM timings to their stock specs, I overclocked my system. No overclocking on the video card. Running the stock HSF. Here's what I did:

Backed up all my data. Set a Windows Restore Point.

Checked mobo temp, CPU-Z, disabled NAV, then ran PCMark2002 (since I only have a GF4-Ti4600), then rebooted and upped the FSB each time.

200mhz fsb, 2000mhz core

CPU 6477

MEM 7887

HDD 1147

36c temp, 35c idle

203mhz fsb, 2030mhz core

36c temp, 35c idle, no tests ran

206mhz fsb, 2060mhz core

36c temp, 35c idle, no tests ran

210mhz fsb, 2100mhz core, at this point I decided to see how it tested.

CPU 6836

MEM 8318

HDD 1170

37c temp, 35c idle, temps now taken right after completing PCmark2002.

215mhz fsb, 2150mhz core

CPU 6957

MEM 8532

HDD 1119

38c temp, 35c idle

220mhz fsb, 2200mhz core

CPU 6957

MEM 8532

HDD 1119

38c temp, 35c idle

I then ran 3DMark2001, scored 14112, up from 13572 without the CPU o/c'd. Temp still 38c after I ran this. Then gave it 45 minutes of CoD just to heat it up good, 40c right after I exited the game.

I could up the FSB a little more, but from what I've read I'm gonna hit a wall very soon and I don't really want to mess up my system just yet. I could also up my RAM timings a little maybe. A Newegg user posted that with the Corsair PC3200 XMS I'm running (2-3-3-6 2.6vstock, which is what I have it set at) he was able to get it to 2-2-2-5 2.7v. I may be able to do this at the cost of a couple degrees celcius, which I can spare. I'll keep you posted.

All in all an easy overclock, no drama.

It's possible my A64 is a 3400+ with a partially bad L2 cache.

Keep in mind that A64's are:

Model: AMD Athlon 64 3000+

Operating Frequency: 2.0GHz

Cache: L1/64K+64K; L2/512K

Model: AMD Athlon 64 3200+

Operating Frequency: 2.0GHz

Cache: L1/64K+64K; L2/1024K

Model: AMD Athlon 64 3400+

Operating Frequency: 2.2GHz

Cache: L1/64K+64K; L2/1MB

So right now I'm running a kinda bastardized A64/3300+.
