If you want to rip DVDs to files that can be put out on the 'net so your family / friends / stalkers can download them and burn them to their own DVDs, I'd use DVD Decrypter. You can rip an .iso file and put that on the web. Then, with most software (DVD Decrypter is just one option) your recipients can burn the file to a DVD with little effort. If you're looking to actually do video editing, to pull parts of DVDs out individually, add menus, that sort of thing, well, that's above and beyond me.
