This has been baffling me for some time now so i'll just come out and say it.

Fat will probably know the answer. (Being a teacher) Ok here we go,

With proper english the word "an" is used and then followed by a word that begins with a vowel, (A,E,I,O,U, and sometime Y) and the word "A" (or letter) is followed by words that begin in consonant.

Ok know that we have that out of the way.

In reference to time, how is this said, "In a hour and a half" Or

"In an hour and half"

I've seen people use this in both ways, which is right.

Please supply your reasoning behind your answer.

Thanks

the proper grammar in that situation is "in an hour and a half" because the h in hour is silent (making the exact same sound as our) therefore providing a vowel sound, while the h in half is not silent, therefore making a consonant sound.

using "an" doesn't happen because there is a vowel after it....it is properly used when there is a vowel SOUND after it.....

w00t?
