It look like to be a OBD II reader.

 

It will probably show how your throttle was used, stop and go, top speed, avg speed, etc.

 

Not sure, if anybody wants to use this to get insurance discount. They should probably publish how they judge, (who to give a discount to and how much). The parameters should be disclosed.

i wonder if they put these in company cars to monitor how their employees drive?

Right... but it looks like a device made for private use where you can download the data to a computer for different purposes.

 

I don't think you can monitor workers or other people with it, as you can just unplug the thing and plug it back in later. Unless, they make a locking mechanism.

Car insurance companies are giving deductions to people willing to put these in their cars. And more deductions for driving during non-rush hour times, driving more slowly, and accelerating and braking more softly.

 

I found this out when I was looking for new auto insurance.
