Too Human

Anyone played the demo yet? I snagged it off Live and played through it a couple of times. Some of the cut-scene stuff looks like it needs a little bit of polish, but the gameplay is surprisingly fun.

After not seriously considering it, I'm on the fence with this one now. It's being described as a loot/dungeon crawler, which to me sounds an awful lot like Zelda = ossumness. I get a little bit of that feel from the demo, but it's hard to really tell with a relatively short snippet.

I promised myself last month that I would holdout on game purchases until later this fall when Gears 2 and other zomg titles come out, but my will has already been tested and is weakening by Battlefield:BC (played through that demo waaay too many times now) and Too Human might strike the final blow.

Thoughts?

A good sign is that during the demo, I was a little too excited about the leveling up, expecially since I had some sweet looking weapons in my inventory that were locked until I leveled up. I was thisclose to hitting level 7 and unlocking a new rifle and sword, but then the demo ended. I was sad. I wanted moarrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!11!!1!

  • 5 weeks later...

A few more classes have been unlocked non-glitch like, and I've now been able to play with all of the classes at least once. Champion, Beserker, and Commando are now all officially unlocked, with the other two a mere A button mash away. I've already played through the demo waaaay too many times, but this game [demo] is like crack. I'm having a tough time deciding which class I'm going to use for my first playthrough. I played the Champion last night for the first time in a while and tried to play whatever style felt natural to me just to see what my combat tendencies are. I really enjoy the flexibility of the Champion, but his biggest asset - air attacks - I can't utilize too well right now. I think the biggest problem is that the goblins fall too quickly to my Great Sword of Flaming Awesomeness for me to juggle them then air-finish them. I've played with the Beserker the most thus far and it is just criminal how fun melee combat is with him.

Since I tend not to use my guns for too much heavy lifting (save juggling for combo and the 'sploding goblins) I think I'm leaning towards going with the Beserker. Dual wield staves/hammers/swords? Yes, please.

Anyone else have a class of preference? That is, if anyone besides Anonymo and I care about this game :D

My quick-hit thoughts on each class:

Beserker: Absolutely insane melee skills with longer slides and faster attacks. Pinball effect with fierce/finishers just FEEL godly. Low armor ratings and poor gun skills make it challenging against mobs of tougher enemies and long-ranged ones.

Defender: The definitive tank. Doesn't get knocked off feet by explosives or most other attacks with insane amounts of armor. Slower moving with much less sliding involved, making him best suited for working in a crowd. Can dual-wield weapon plus shield.

Champion: Most balanced all around, specializing in air combat. Definitely the way to go for people who aren't as familiar with the combat techniques. The fun factor might go way up with better aerial skills with a two-handed hammer that can send numerous enemies in the air at once. I will definitely be playing through with this class at some point.

Commando: Gun/Rifle specialist. When leveled, insane run-and-gun possibilities. Forget about melee though except for juggling and escaping a crowd. Melee is just too much fun for me though, can't see myself doing a full playthrough as this class.

Bioengineer: Healer class, with health slowly regenerating (I believe it regenerates a little quicker if you are in combat, but only did one demo playthrough with him). Melee and gun skills are pretty poor initially, although in the full game a leveled-up bio might be a serious force to be reckoned with. I don't have too many health-related issues with the other classes at the moment to feel like I NEED regenerating health though.

Bottom line is I'll probably end up playing through with all of them, but I'm just curious as to others thoughts on them and which one you want to use for your first play though! :D

For some strange reason it still won't let me access all the classes in the demo, even when I try to fix the dates on the console...

Oh well, hopefully there are no delays in the release today.

The Beserker and Commando are unlocked with Champion, you gotta use the A button trick to get the others (I never tried the change-the-date method).

If you move to the locked character you want (say, the defender), start mashing the A button really fast. While continuing to mash A, flick the left stick towards the left or right to an unlocked character, and if you did kept pressing A it will start the game with the locked character you want. Convoluted, yes, but it works.

It will also essentially be a moot point since I am going out to BB in 30 minutes to buy it, but I spose if you haven't decided on a class yet the demo is a great way to do so.

... or not. Their website said it was in stock at my local store (pre-order box said 19th as well) but store wouldn't let me have it till tomorrow. Oh well.

Wha? I HATE EB/Gamestop and their silly misconceptions about release dates.

Why am I at work today :( Almost stayed up way past by bedtime last night playing this.

ARGH!!!!!! I was rather upset I couldn't get it yet. Picking it up this afternoon and leaving work early. I could have gone to the back of that BB and strangled the guy who said it wasn't being released until the 20th (today). I played the demo 2 more times to tide me over since I was all jacked up about being able to play it when I got home.

I decided to go Beserker for my first playthrough, btw.

Currently lvl14 Beserker, about halfway through second level.

HOLY CRAP, the difficulty took a MAJOR leap forward after completing the first level. I had to have a major adjustment in strategy the first time I encountered a mob of polarities :freak3:

I love a good challenge though. Incredibly addicting game. Anyone on the fence with this one really needs to give it a try. It will take you a couple of hours to really get a smooth feel for the combat, but once you do it is oh-so-satisfying :D

So where are you now? I hit the 4th (?) "level" (character at level 24 I think) and my berserker is getting his butt handed to him by a named enemy and a mob of unruly undead... <_<

On that note, Battlefield: Bad Company is one awesome game!

I discovered yesterday that there is an achievement for dieing 100 times. Not necessarily something I should broadcast......

Finished it yesterday, I think it had taken about 13 hours to get through, I'm not on my second playthrough with the same character (Berserker) and at level 30.

I really enjoyed the game, but I would say that a game which seems to "expect" you to die so often, as it's simply near impossible to survive, probably has some balance issues..... I've noticed that the "angel" doesn't appear everytime you die, but I could safely say I'm now sick of seeing it.

I have hit level 26 (halfway to 27 I believe) in the 4th "area" (not sure what to call them, to be honest - it's Helheim). The difficulty took a big jump from the first to the second "area", then has steadily increased. I definitely was getting my butt handed to me for the first 20 minutes of the 4th area until I adjusted to the new undead varieties (the big kamikazee dudes were a real pain until I learned to pick them out of a crowd). After the first couple of sections of the 4th area I have gotten pretty good though. I think I'm getting close to the end and am looking forward to continuing to level up my Beserker after I finish the first run through the story.

The beserker is definitely a difficult class, especially for the first play through. I have learned to prioritize my targets instead of just sliding directly into a mob. I always go for the polarity/explosive enemies first, then the ranged/missile enemies, then the fodder. Some of the polarities require different ammo types to kill though, so switching to lasers or something from my slug pistols can be a pain (I use slugs 90% of the time - they're the most satisfying to fire, and my lvl 25 "blue" blueprint ones are sweet). For my fighting technique, I use a LOT of juggle -> air finisher, especially for the numerous soldiers/elites that can't be taken down with a couple of swings. I also use 2in1 ruiners a TON (slide -> ruiner=half combo cost), plus my exploding spider. The sentient power is a great way to get combo back to use ruiners again. Oh yeah, the fierce attacks are ESSENTIAL to not getting beat down. I use them constantly now that I've become comfortable with them.

*The blueprint armor all looks AWESOME. They put a lot of effort into the art detail of the pieces of armor and unique weapons, and it really shows. My dual-wield unique swords (orange blueprint I believe) LOOK and FUNCTION amazing. Love it. Can't wait to find some epic loot. I already have some orange level 40 blueprints, so I know lots more cool stuff to come.

**I want Bad Company, just hadn't justified the cost yet. I might give it a rent for now.

Finished the campaign last night plus once more the first level. Level 31 Beserker now, with a complete orange armor set that looks awesome. I can't decide now if I want to keep leveling my Beserker or move to another class to start building it up...

I definitely want to try co-op sometime, although it sounds like those at GC are all playing beserkers, lol. I might have to get another one going first...

On the story: I wish there had been a few more story-line elements as it was over sooner that I would have liked. I know that they couldn't do too much though since they need to stick relatively closely to the source material and they want to make a trilogy out of it. That said, I am drawn in by the story and the last 10 seconds of the final cut-scene made me want Too Human 2 NAO.

Finished a second run through campaign with my Beserker (just a quick one), now at level 43. No high-end equipment yet besides some awesome high-30s swords and rifles. I'm guessing most of the good stuff comes from non-campaign runs through the levels.

I've gotten a lot better at the whole not-dying thing with the beserker (did clean runs on first two section, nearly-clean on third) although Helheim is still darn near impossible to finish without dying with this class. Even my uber-ruiners can't save me all the time...

I'm starting a Commando soon to get a taste for more gun-oriented play, gotta try out those cannons! :D
