  1. Only thing I noticed is the Radeon card needing 2 6pin pci-e connectors, forgot about ti needing 2. Yours has how many? If you want to heep your power supply maybe step down to a Radeon 4850? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150351
  2. Launch times? Who really cares, I open Firefox once in the morning and it stays open all day. OK, safari wins 1 thing, firefox everything else. I tried safari a while back and went back to Firefox at the end of the day. One word. Add-ons.
  3. I was pointing Wilco towards dual cores with the ATI 4870 cause I don't know how well the quad's will work with his 500w power supply with a descent video card.
  4. He can always easy drop a AMD quad core in that mobo a couple years form now when they are dirt cheap. Or here's a good cheap Phenom x4 combo. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDet...st=Combo.205339 Here's a review. For instance playing Fallout 3 really doesn't matter what CPU you have, I get in the 60's with my intel 2160 @ 1600x1200. I'm an Intel guy myself, but AMDs Phenom II offering is quite compelling considering the prices.
  5. Had to send my WD 500AAKS off for replacement so I went and made the jump since I had to reinstall windows anyway. I'm running a Intel 2160 @ 3.2, 4gigs and a geforce GTX 260 on a temporary 320gb seagate and it's just as snappy as if not a little more then the XP i just came from. First thing I disabled was the warning popup thing that happens EVERY TIME YOU DO SOMETHING. I have to say I really like it. To bad i have to reinstall it when I get my drive back and then again in October.
  6. Inside improvements look much better then the outside ones. I would have left some of the mantle natural to match the banister. Hey when your done you may not want to move! hehe.
  7. AMD is way behind the curve on performance which is why I stayed away from posting tech that is that old. As an upgrade, it would not be worth it. I updated my post, but still the original CPU I posted is a Phenom II AM3 socket, it's not that old and sounds like it would suit his needs well with the Radeon 4870. Will blow him away compared to his current system and sooo cheap. You can spend 2 or 3 times as much but I guarantee your computer won't be twice as fast. Well unless your just going to be encoding video all day. I'm running an old intel 2160 1mb (clocked up to 3.2) and see no reason to upgrade yet because most current gen games are more bound to the GPU, so put more money into that.
  8. AMD combo $190 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDet...st=Combo.203014 XFX HD-487A-ZHFC Radeon HD 4870 1GB $150 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150394 At $340 this combo will pack a wallop. Will work fine with your 500w PS too. I recommend taking the leftover cash and getting a new hard drive. Update: The X2 550 Black Edition Callisto would be a better CPU with the fat 6mb cache. It's only $15 more but you'll loose the instant $25 off combo.
  9. I'm glad I live just outside of town with a couple acres. Before we bought our house we lived in a street full of duplexes. People always walking around and cars pulling in and out. I hated it. Good luck selling you place .fx and finding something you really want. That is available. And That you can afford. It took me and my wife a little over a year to find a house.

  13. You can upgrade from XP. I like XP, thing is time for it is running out and soon it wont be supported. Seems like a good time to change over instead of waiting for a few years and doing it anyway. At $50 seems like a steal, I spent just as much on video games that I've only played for a day. I Figure I'll be using Win7 for the next 6-7 years. I just ordered a copy from newegg, free shipping and no tax as opposed to paying tax from bestbuy. Seems all stores offer shipping only.
  14. is this not a good deal for the upgrade? I been using an upgrade edition of XP through the years and with several mobo and HDD changes and even a complete new system. Will there be a problem with doing the same thing with Win7?
  15. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/offers/pre-order.aspx Seems you can also pre-order from places like Best Buy and Amazon. Offer ends July 11 or until supplies run out. I figure I will swing by BB and order a copy tomorrow.
  16. That's what I was wondering, game compatibility with the 64 bit version. I'd like to give it a shot since i read the RC is good till March 2010 till the 2 hours shutdowns begin. I play a lot of games that might go back as early as 2000. Well im downloading the 64 bit now anyway...
  17. Well the game movie somehow made me uninterested in the game now.
  18. Seems Huxley just finished phase 2 of beta testing whatever that means. The game has been in production for so long and there is no hype, so I figure they have about 8 more phases of beta till game launch.
  19. It doesn't actually activate till you use a program that uses sound, hard to explain and it's just strange. Sometimes the driver wouldn't initialize and you would have to unplug and replugin the USB. Maybe because it was trying to work in conjunction with our laptops sound card, maybe if you don't have any sound at all it will work perfect.
  20. I hear ya Preacher, I've been laid off and we are barely scrapping by. We will be fine as long as nothing breaks or anyone gets sick. The 1/8" jack messed up on my wife's laptop so I picked up one of these of ebay for under $3 shipped. It's kinda flaky but works. cheapo USB sound
  21. I usually play some everyday and it's hard to find ONS servers. Haven't been playing freon much at all, the server I like has issues with my connection and I havent seen Wentz in weeks, think he's lost in WoW again. I can verify the 1v1 weenies, Unclean described them to a tee. They make me laugh when you kill them they always have an excuse.
  22. Matrox made an add in 3D card called the M3D. It used the PowerVR chip just like Videologic's Apocalypse 3D. The M3D was Matrox's answer to adding 3D to their own line up of cards which failed miserably in the 3D market at the time. While not a great performer it was still a huge step up from a Virge card. Actually ran a ported GLQuake at 30fps on a P200.
