[Mmmm]Homer April 13, 2004 Share [Mmmm]Homer Member April 13, 2004 Flightgear - free! If you read this morning's article on Tom's Hardware about converting to Linux then you may have seen the mention of Flightgear, a free flight sim. I'm getting the Windows version right now. It looks like MS FLight Sim from a couple of years ago, and it has 100% world coverage with tons of terrain files.
Crowbar April 13, 2004 Share Crowbar Member April 13, 2004 looks pretty good, BUT, I played FS98, and with no combat...it gets boring real fast.

[Mmmm]Homer April 13, 2004 Author Share [Mmmm]Homer Member April 13, 2004 LOL, I think I'd need at least an SR-71 so as not to get too bored. Playaa April 14, 2004 Share Playaa Member April 14, 2004 uumm...so this flight sim stinks one thing that's annoying is it's real time...so the only time I even get to play with it is at night...and those planes don't have headlights
dwEEziL April 14, 2004 Share dwEEziL Member April 14, 2004 So change your system time and play during the "daytime".
Playaa April 14, 2004 Share Playaa Member April 14, 2004 I still don't think I'd enjoy it...I can't even find a place to change controls and you don't even really start on a runway...you just kinda start on the ground then I THINK you roll down a hill and hope you get enough speed to take off... [Mmmm]Homer April 15, 2004 Author Share [Mmmm]Homer Member April 15, 2004 I admit that I'm about to fire this up for the first time now finally, I looked at the world terrain files and they look like they are for Linux versions only? Anyone?
[Mmmm]Homer April 15, 2004 Author Share [Mmmm]Homer Member April 15, 2004 Playaa, there are time acceleration keys, gotta RTFM, or C:\Program Files\FlightGear\data\Docs\FGShortRef.html by default. This opens if you hit the Help in-game. And go into the advanced screen when starting it and play with the time of day settings and weather. Crowbar April 15, 2004 Share Crowbar Member April 15, 2004 I wonder if there are any virtual airlines for this. In the heyday of FS98 a friend of mine was a pilot for a virtual commercial airline. He was based out of "Boston" and he had his own plane. After logging enough flight hours, he could upgrade to pilot a larger plane. Seemed so pointless, sitting at the computer for hours, flying in real time from Boston to Chicago, or Atlanta, or LA.
[Mmmm]Homer April 15, 2004 Author Share [Mmmm]Homer Member April 15, 2004 LOL, that sucks! I grabbed the biggest one I could find, the An-224 and flew around SF Bay for a while. My MS Precision 2 joystick is supposedly supported and it works except for the 3rd axis (rudder) so it took about 8 passes to get lined up on the runway correctly so I could land it. The X-15 is just crazy to try and pilot. I do like the clouds and stuff, I cranked up the draw distance and all the effects. Looks pretty nice.
