Steam Virus?

Recommended Posts

I'm not using that SW, but I wonder if it really was a virus. Maybe the coding or whatever in the item it detected as an "unknown virus" was actually a legitimate Steam file.

Valve would be under some serious fire if they let a virus get out through Steam.

I certain couple lines come to mind from the Steam forums.

Firstly, just a reminder of the VAC 2 GOLDEN RULE!

"Here is a very basic bottom line rule about "will VAC ban me" ...

If you do ANYTHING that modifies the executable files (.dll, .exe) Valve supplied to you, you will be banned"

Q) What if the user contracts a malicious virus - that is not necessarily the user's fault? The .dll and .exe type files tend to be prime targets for viruses. Will I be VAC 2 banned?
Unfortunately, nobody has answered that question yet. I've never had malware problems, but I've seen some impressive work in the process of cleaning other's computers - particularly infections that alter a program's binaries and while allowing the original program to continue functioning, it runs the malware's code at the same time.

Anyhoo, viruses are certainly something I'd get cleaned up as fast as possible - Steam being the least of concerns.
