Microsoft is prolly mandating it They are. Microsoft can't stand anything that's free for people. Besides, the campaign is only 2 maps long. L4D1: 9 months to release Survival Mode, add Versus Mode to 2 of the campaigns, and now a 2 map campaign that lasts a projected 30 minutes according to several articles. L4D2: 11 months to make 5 campaigns with Co-op, Versus, and Survival Modes, new weapons and playable characters, improved AI Director, and new Special Infected. They must think we are stupid to believe that this is a whole new game. More maps/weapons etc and using the same engine at most warrants an expansion costing no more than $19.99, not a full $50. Besides some of the custom maps fans have created are way better than the original ones and goes to show that making new maps isn't that difficult or costly for Valve.
