My son wants to go quad core and I need some info from you guys as to what to look for. Do we go AMD or Intel? I'm looking at Asus boards I know AMD has the x4's with am3 sockets and ddr3 mem but i don't know much about the Intel's. Anyway, there's my ? What do ya think? Preacher October 9, 2009 Share Preacher Member October 9, 2009 For performance Intel is top tier right now. The i5 systems are priced fairly reasonable and are pretty good for performance. This is the direction I went. I got an intel board as well, but it was more because of cost than choice. I have always been a fan of Asus as well. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115215 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121388 are what I am running and they are great. The i7 systems have a little more choice, but for the money I would still go i5
Primus October 9, 2009 Author Share Primus Member October 9, 2009 Couple ?'s I like the CPU I think I'll tell him to go with that, what do you think of this board? http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5083743&CatId=4720 I have been running MSI boards for years with no problems and I really like this board. gonna go with 4 gigs of ddr3 and I was looking at some OCZ at 9-9-9-24 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4933681&CatId=3361 My last ? is this, will an ultra 650 PS be big enough for this system. Here is what he will be running: Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor MSI P55-CD53 Motherboard - Intel P55, Socket LGA1156, Core i5 OCZ PC12800 Obsidian 4GB Dual Channel Memory Kit - 1600MHz, 4096MB (2x 2048MB) XFX GForce GTX 285 1Gig
Laz.e.rus October 10, 2009 Share Laz.e.rus Member October 10, 2009 The 750 should be plenty unless you go silly SLI-ing. (not recommended on the P55 platform - it goes 8x-ing on you) The ram looks ok. The timing arent great, but for the price...EH! ITs 4 gigs! The 750 has proven to be a little underpowered when rated stock. HOWEVER, in the evga forums, it is proving to be an overclocking winner. Dont forget btw, that EVGA warranties its Mobos and Vid cards even including overclocking. Also, the evga boards are drilled to allow 775 cooling systems as well. Heres the Cheapy Evga board... I got the next up version and am very happy so far. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813188054 I hit 3.8 (instead of 2.8) Ghz in a piece of single click cake with that board and the 860. I have a thread here about Laz's new lynnfield and a post in the OC thread as well. I chose the 860. If you want to OC the 750 is great. If youre going to leave it all stock, maybe the 860 would be better? One nice thing about the P55/1156 series is its "auto" turbo. If your are running 100% stock, it will boost its own performance depending on power consumption. IE: a single core game will get the goods. Drawback: this will NOT be a 100% future-proof platform. They will continue to support the other system, including when 6-core comes out. Depends on what you want. Oh, the 1156 stock coolers...well, SUCK. Get another air cooler. I know the 860 came with a better one when you order the 860 automatically. If not, I can hook you up with a "Hyper Master TX3" heatsink/fan. It came with mine but I bought another instead (see sig). Its less than amazing, but MUCH better than the POS stock one... just pay shipping. Link to cooler: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16835103064 Excuse my midnight rambling...did I help? Ive been delving into this platform a bit, so hit me with a specific question if you need to.
Primus October 10, 2009 Author Share Primus Member October 10, 2009 Thanks for all the info. We are probably going to OC it so thats no problem, and I was thinking of this HS. http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4502178&CatId=4749 I might try this memory instead: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4350429&CatId=3361
Laz.e.rus October 11, 2009 Share Laz.e.rus Member October 11, 2009 Interesting cooler! That last memory you posted up is only 1333 instead of 1600 like you posted before. This will limit your overclocking options. Here is some acceptable G skill Ripjaws. I dont have any experience with them, but Ive been seeing them in the Evga forums. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231278 Here's mine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145268 Or some OCZ's: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227483
ZeroDamage October 12, 2009 Share ZeroDamage Member October 12, 2009 (edited) If you do not already have a video card, I would go with ATI's new stuff. They are the best performers for video cards right now. The 58xx series that is. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%201305520549%20106793261&name=Radeon%20HD%205000%20series Edited October 12, 2009 by ZeroDamage
