Clueless January 30, 2010 Share Clueless GC Alumni January 30, 2010 So, my router is aging, and I want to get a newer one that will better handle larger media files (for when I actually get around to doing a kick arse media center type thingy) and since I do seem to have many problems with CS registration and lag in a very intermittent and unpredictable fashion...i'm thinking maybe a new router that can prioritize traffic might help...even if only a little. What suggestions do you guys have? I would be especially interested in first hand experience. Do these new "gaming" routers actually work? Let's hear it! stutters January 30, 2010 Share stutters GC Alumni January 30, 2010 is your gaming rig wired or wireless? if it's wireless, plug it in instead. if you can't, make sure you don't have a wireless phone, microwave, or tv sitting around your router or your wireless card. i've never used a gaming router, but i imagine they just make setting QoS for games (ports) easier with presets. if you feel like tinkering, grab a linksys wrt54g or wrt54gl (amazon or newegg). they're bullet proof and easily modded. http://openwrt.org/ http://www.dd-wrt.com/ http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato
Clueless January 30, 2010 Author Share Clueless GC Alumni January 30, 2010 I game hardwired to the router, and just use wireless for the PS3 and web surfing with the laptops and such.

Not at all why I suggest it! :-D Anyway, I'm also a fan of Tomato on a WRT54gl. It makes for a surprisingly powerful router. So what Stutters said.
