ok so my church wants a new computer to run powerpoint slides, some short video editing, office stuff, and other little stuff i'm sure they'll want to do later with it. right now we have a P3.. somthing or other, 128 ram... maybe.. well lets just say its slow, has problems and everyone wants to get rid of it. i've never put together a machine for these kinds of perposes so i've worked out 3 levels they could go to (its a church so cheap is good) and i'd like some of your imput for each of them to try and get them cheaper, faster, or what not. all prices are from new egg.

I would build for reliability and stability. For ease I'm putting my comments in brackets under the items.

1 lvl

Enlight Blue/Beige ATX Mid-Tower Case Power Supply A-3100 $40.00

Comes with 300w psu

[Kinda light duty]

Lite-On Beige 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive LTR-52327S BEIGE $34.50

Panasonic 3.5inch Floppy Disk Drive JU-257A-827P $9.99

[cheap is cheap, you can get a $5.59 floppy off of newegg]

ASUS nForce2 IGP Socket A CPU A7N8X-VM/400 $94.99

[go less mobo and more CPU here. Look at Biostar, Albatron, or ECS for a mobo that tops out at 266mhz FSB for the cheapest.]

AMD Athlon XP 2000+, 266 FSB, 256K Cache Processor $57.00

Comes with a heatsink/fan

[they won't want to upgrade so give em an XP2400+ for $10 more]

Western Digital 20GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive WD200BB $55.49

2mb cache

[i'd go with a SE drive, 80gb for $15 more]

Kingston 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-2100 $76.00

TOTAL w/shipping $ 379.97

2 lvl

Enlight Beige Micro ATX EN-7358-0PU $32.00

Comes with 200W psu

[i get queasy under 350 watts]

Lite-On Beige 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive LTR-52327S BEIGE $34.50

Panasonic 3.5inch Floppy Disk Drive JU-257A-827P $9.99

[see above]

Western Digital 20GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive WD200BB $55.49

2mb cache

[see above]

Kingston ValueRAM 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-2100 $86.00

Two sticks for dual channel

[see next comment]

CHAINTECH nForce2 Ultra 400 Socket A 7NIL1-SUMMIT $59.00

On board lan and sound

[no sense in getting more mobo than the CPU can handle, and go with onboard video, they can upgrade if they need to]

AMD Athlon XP 2000+, 266 FSB, 256K Cache Processor $57.00

Comes with a heatsink/fan

[get something they won't have to upgrade, I still say XP2400+ is best]

SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9200 Video Card, 128MB DDR, $64.00

128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP

[onboard video is cheap]

TOTAL w/shipping $ 414.98

3 lvl

ANTEC Black Solution Series ATX Mid-Tower Case SLK3700-BQE $72.00

Comes with a 350W psu, quiet.

[these are nice, I've gotten over my own urge to buy the cheapest case/psu]

Lite-On Black 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive LTR-52327S $35.00

Panasonic Black 3.5inch Floppy Disk Drive JU-256A-198P $10.99

[cheaper black floppy on newegg, i'm sure of it]

Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive WD400JB $63.50

8mb cache

[80gb is only $7 more]

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ 333 FSB, 512K Cache Processor $75.00

[this is fine for level 3, but the higher cost of ram/mobo/cpu will not pay off in better performance, in real world terms.]

ASUS nForce2 Ultra 400 Socket A CPU A7N8X $85.99

Speeze MicroFlow CPU Cooler for AMD 5T321B1H3 $8.99

[is this the one i always suggest?]

Antec All Clear Pro 120mm Double Ball Bearing Case fan $13.00

[Antec cases come with 120mm fan, at least mine did.]

Corsair Value Select 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-2700 $93.00

Two sticks for dual channel

SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9200 Video Card, 128MB DDR, $64.00

128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP

TOTAL w/shipping $ 546.47

thanks for the post. i just grabed a floppy so thats no biggy. as for the first MB, i was looking for something with on board video and good on board sound and i wasnt sure if a video card would be needed or not so i went w/ the 9200 as its really good for the price. the cpu cooler had like 31 airflow and 27db sound level so thats why i picked that one. alright im going to make some adjustments thanks to your coments and edit it with the new specs later today.

*edit reply to killers post*

who makes that psu? i couldnt see a name and i'd rather not buy a psu i didnt know about. the samsung drive has a 11ms seek time and the WD have 8.9 and one of the problems with the current one was its slow seek time so i figured a 8.9 was a good bang for the buck. geil is good, forgot about them. and that MB has the SiS chip set and isnt the Nforce 2 the best right now? last time i checked it was.

also, I would not go with a el cheapo power supply. I've seen quite a few cheap 350 watter psu's go out.

*EDIT

WOW I really messed up...

that mobo I listed comes with onboard video. It also has sound and lan. So you can take the video card off my list bringing the total to

346.98

or you could spend 20 bucks more and double your HD space to 80 gig :)

looks ok, but i have a few suggestions..

a 333bus 2500+ costs about 10 bucks more than the 266bus 2400+. 333 bus is todays standard for AMD, your buying behind the best price/performance ratio. Also if your getting a 266 processor you might as well get PC2100 RAM, because either your system will default your ram to 266 or your ram will run at 333 and your system will bottleneck at your processor. Either way, Having ram on a faster fsb than your processor will generally not see much performance improvement if any. If you decide to go with the older 266fsb system you should be able to get it for cheaper than 420 bucks. 420 should almost be enough to buy a good gaming system if you go shysty on the video card.

Would definetly recommend using homers budget pc guide and pick what you need from that list.

thems their are sum good sug-jest-tyons! i guess i could go up to the 2500+ but the reason i keep going with lower stuff is to keep the cost down, remember this is for people who want to spend as little as possable, so if a 266 fsb will run just as well as the 333 in powerpoint theres no reason to spend the extra $10, 10 here and 10 there adds up. i am parsal to enlight as i have one in my rig, but reading about the 300w one at newegg some people posted having compatablitly problems with it and AMD prossesors. oh and suprisingly i found that ram for cheaper than the pc2100. anyway, i'll take what i have tomorrow for the guy to look at and see what he thinks... hell he was asking all about p4s, video cards and crap last time so i dont think he'll be happy but maybe he'll come around that a 400 system will run powerpoint just as well as a 2k system. thanks for everybody's help.
