  1. Done that. Even worse, running with pistol out, then shooting someone in the back because your finger slips (done that too).
  2. Also, be sure to take a quick look at your advanced video settings. Try setting anti-aliasing to none and filtering to trilinear. Make sure VSync is off (this will cut your framerate down quite a bit). Set your models and textures to medium. I played for a while with a Radeon 9000, so I'd be pretty sure a 9250 should get the job done.
  3. When you're in game, go into console and enter "net_graph 3" which will give you some info about framerate as well as network stuff. If your framerate is much below 30fps that will probably be a source of noticeable 'lag,' also ideally you will have 0 choke and loss as much as possible.
  4. Looks smooth enough to my eye. Keep in mind that NTSC is only 29.97 fps. Personally i find this a lot more playable than watching my fps bounce from the 80s down to the 40s. And, next time i kill you, you now get the satisfaction of being taken down by someone running 30fps (OK, maybe that'll never happen ).
  5. Second what Ice said. I got a NEC ASLCD72v which has advertised response time 25ms and I don't notice any problem on that. Of course, I run with fps_max 30...
  6. Looks like the match is set for tonight at 10pm. I'll be ready to play if anyone else isn't.
  7. Ever played it on a 110" screen running 19xx X 1xxx res? I can't remember the exact res. I'm telling you, it is awesome. However, on topic, if you are just looking to run standard what is it 320x240 and your TV and Vid card (most new ones do) have S-Video or composite connections you shouldn't have too much trouble. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Nah, I was playing on a 50ish inch screen, connected with an S-video cable. So as you can imagine, things were a little blurry. Can't shoot people in the face if you can't tell where their faces are!
  8. Most of the time this is as simple as getting an S-video cable and a stereo RCA to 1/8" mini cable. You can get pretty good Y cables for the audio made by Monster at most electronic stores, but if you go to a RadioShack and find the section of store brand cables there should be a much larger variety, and they should be good enough. Just makes sure you know what kind of output is on your video card before you get started. P.S. playing CS on a TV is not as good as it sounds.
  9. I like this map. It looks good, and it doesn't favor either side. True there are not as many nooks and crannies as some other maps, but I think it makes for more interesting close-range combat than most maps. Whenever I have played on this map lately, the server has not emptied out, or even dropped below 10v10. EDIT: Post #100. Woo!
  10. If I understand dual-core CPUs correctly, they'll help whenever you have multiple threads of execution simultaneously. I may be wrong, but I'd tend to assume an application like HL2 is already multithreaded.
  11. The issue you raise has been raised before, although not always as reasonably. The bottom line is that those are the rules of these servers, and anyone who can't follow them is free not to play here. The only explanation I can give you is that there is a difference between fake violence and real offensive language. I'm sure everyone playing CS can probably deal with that kind of language, but not everyone wants to, and GC is one of few places where such people can play without being bothered by people tossing around insults and foul language. If you are willing to follow the rules and want to get unbanned please read this, I'm sure that we all are glad to have players to compete with who are willing to obey the rules of the servers.
  12. I can back up what you say about the galil, as far as I've seen from it the first shot is solid gold, and at close range the magazine size and rate of fire makes it a lot better than the ak-47. The famas is a tough one though, there's definetly some recoil, I can only get much accuracy out of it with short bursts like any other rifle.
  13. I do agree with this, although I'm not sure how many players would actually use them. IIRC the sg552 and the aug are both open sights, designed to be used with the other eye open. As such, they are basically not scoped weapons in the same sense as sniper rifles. Personally, I don't find myself using these guns when I play on #1, to me they seem less accurate than ak-47 and m4, but maybe I'm just biased from playing scopeless for so long. Anyway, the natural counter-argument is that once the sg552 and aug are allowed, people are going to start complaining harder about there being no scout. This is probably true.
  14. So I installed the new PSU, which seemed to make things a little better (crashes less frequent), but didn't solve the problem. Also, I started seeing memory errors more frequently, so I did a clean install of Windows. Problem solved, so it must have been some kind of software corruption.
  15. # 3541 "PWNEDBYMAT" STEAM_0:1:4556646 11:43 65 0 active Spawn attacking, flashing, team attacking. Repeated requests to stop were acknowledged but did not stop.
  16. I don't get what it is with some schools and the bandwidth. Some like yours won't let anyone play games, but there are lots of others that have huge pipes and don't care what you do with them. If I were you I'd see if I could find a game that could run on the LAN without going outside to the Internet.
  17. Thanks Ice, that clears things up a lot. Not having been around for previous OSSes, and not seeing a stucked post anywhere explaining the format (hint), I wasn't sure exactly what OSS was.
  18. I've placed an order for a new PSU (Antec SmartPower 2.0 500W), figuring that I'd need a new one sooner or later anyway and that one should be good for a long while. The bad news is I've taken the 7200 back out for a spin this afternoon, and after some CS:S it's starting to show similar problems. As far as DirectX goes, I've tried running the 9600 on 9.0c with no difference. I'd hate to think that the mobo is going, but that's not out of the question as one of the RAM channels has already proven bad (RAM worked but made some errors). For reference, the mobo is an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe. Since you bring up SP2, I guess I may as well toss in the fact that I'm running SP4. It'd be a shame to find out I finally have to throw Win2k away, but if that's what it takes that's what it takes. For now I'll just wait on the PSU and see what happens, but the fact that both cards are now having problems bothers me.
  19. Not sure if I understand exactly what you're talking about, but I'd guess your best bet might be to examine the JavaScript that opens up the player and see if you can get the URL out. If you can do that getting the video will be easy enough.
  20. Thanks for the heads up on the possible power problem guys. I looked more closely at the PSU I've got and realized it's an Antec SmartPower 300W (whose label oddly enough lists max power output at 280W). I don't remember seeing any power warnings on the video card packaging, but I might have ignored them since I've been using a bag from my friend's 9800 AIW (which had a very prominent power warning) for my old cards, and I don't have the packaging with me to look at. Anyway if the 9600 needs a 350W, I'm short of that with or without a prominent warning, so looks like I'm buying a new PSU.
  21. Thanks for the replies guys. I've used DriverCleanerPro both when I installed the new catalyst and the new omega driver, so hopefully the driver should not be an issue. I can say for sure that the fan on the card is moving, I've reached in and touched it to make sure. As far as the PSU goes, it seems like the 9600 should not be that much of a drain since it didn't even come with an external connector, but the PSU in my machine is less than a year old and (I think) 350W, which should be ample for a video card, a P4 @ 3.066, a single IDE HDD, and 2 DVD drives. Right now I'm gonna put in the 7200 to see what happens. If there's still a problem with that card, it's clean format time.
  22. I haven't been around here long, so anyone mind filling me in on what the rules are for OSS?
  23. OK, so as the title says I'm having enormous video problems. Recently (a couple months ago) bought an Asus 9600GE AGP card to replace my aging 7200 AIW. All seemed well, but over a while I've been starting to have big problems. Mainly, CS:S will now crash suddenly. Sometimes it recovers after several seconds, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes I have to press the reset button on the whole machine. It's gotten to the point now that it'll freeze half the times i do a video stress test. Along with that, I've also been seeing wierd stuff on the screen sometimes. Stuff will flicker, so that for a split second i can see through something, usually out into the abyss (no not in a game-useful way i.e. walling). I updated to the newest catalyst from ATI, no improvement, then to the newest omega driver, no improvement. Changed from AGP 8x to 4x, turned FastWrite both on and off, increased the AGP voltage from 1.5 to 1.6, tried to disable "write combining" (not sure if this did anything at all, MS said to put a key in the reg and that's it). Once today I even had a severe graphics glitch not even in CS:S or with Steam running (Notepad, WinSCP, Windows running), and in the recent past I've had Halo freeze completely as well (which it rarely did before). So as far as I can tell it's not a CS:S specific problem. So at this point, what do I do? The only things I can think to try would be: 1) changing to OpenGL (currently using DX8.1, have had same problems on DX9.0) 2) under-clocking the video card (something it seems like I shouldn't have to do) 3) turning all the settings down to minimum and seeing what happens (again should not have to do with a 9600 I think) 4) swapping my 7200 AIW back in to prove to myself that it is in fact the 9600 that is causing the problem Probably I'll try 3 followed directly by 4, to make sure it is a video card problem. Anyway I'm done fiddling with it tonight, but I'd appreciate any insights someone might be able to give while I try other stuff.
