This went on for a few rounds, but sorry I didn't get a demo before the map ended (when he left)

I believe you're missing some very important people in that picture... it might not be pretty, but at least it's a WHOLE screenshot ...and don't mind the fact that a certain team was totally massacred in that round... just a little detail, that's all... nothing important... nope, not at all...

I certain couple lines come to mind from the Steam forums. Unfortunately, nobody has answered that question yet. I've never had malware problems, but I've seen some impressive work in the process of cleaning other's computers - particularly infections that alter a program's binaries and while allowing the original program to continue functioning, it runs the malware's code at the same time. Anyhoo, viruses are certainly something I'd get cleaned up as fast as possible - Steam being the least of concerns.

Well, Winnipeg, MB is pretty much smack in the middle of North America, but they still say that it's "the gateway to the west". Even though it would sound like that could be called "midwest", it's not all that close to the midwest. And my internet connection goes out east to Toronto, and then into the south, which would be close to the northeast, and.... I think I'll be attending Fatty's 5th grade class sometime soon

One thing for sure though; I don't think HC should have the same ban ability that VAC does. I know that the developer has stated that the program has flagged people for cheating who had someone else speccing the match and relaying information over Ventrilo/TeamSpeak . Whether that could be considered as a false positive or not is entirely up to debate, but I certainly don't think it warrants a permanent ban from all secure servers. Maybe a month or two ban for the first infraction, more if it happens again. If anything, the original release plan - a server side plugin that can only ban on that server - wasn't such a bad idea. Even if you aren't cheating (or are only doing small things like ghosting or installing neon-coloured player models), if you manage to score a godlike 85 HC points then you probably are tipping the balances on the server too much and shouldn't be around anyhow. Basically an automated admin, so the real admins can spend less time in the console and more time getting shot by the regulars . BTW: I believe only three or four people in that video were hacking. Most interstingly was the "reaction to unknown" guy on piranesi - he was wallhacking, and you'd never know it.

My name around here came about sort of twice... I used to spend a lot of time in the (strangely soap-operaeic) world of P2P software, in which there was a character named "random nut" (guy who did much of Kazaa Lite K++, among other works). I had to register for some other P2P-related site in which I needed a name that wasn't the usual one I'd used elsewhere, and thought "random n00b" was somewhat appropriate. The second place my name came from would be from the first day I tried CS 1.6 (actually, one of the very few days ever). I was playing under the default name (whatever that may be) and I had no idea where to take the bomb, so I passed it to someone else. I was promptly called a "random n00b" and was kickbanned from the server. Struck me as either an unusual coincedence, or a sign from above. I took the name to Return to Castle Wolfenstein (which was the best my ol' 400MHz CPU could play), and liked the confusion it created along the lines of "which noob?". I played UT2004 under this name a lot once I got my Athlon processor, and now as well in CS:S (though I played as "dontshoothenoob" until I could get a K:D of 1:2 somewhat reliably). The "00b" is gone in the game though, as Counter-Strike is much more player-oriented than RtCW or UT were, and I'd get called both "random" and "noob" in the game. Just a little simplification. My other name was just something my friend punched in when we were playing 007 Tomorrow Never Dies on the N64. Found out later that it's a mathematical term. But you probably won't hear me use that name around here, even if it is what I've been using on most of the Internet. ...I need to go to sleep now.

When this happens to me, I slam the mouse on the table. It's cheap wires inside the mouse, and maybe something to do with the fact that I Frankensteined the thing together from two other mice.

I think that's the number one advantage of a smoke grenade: it stops the name display, even if the haze is pretty clear, and one smoke lasts for a very long time. You just have to know when to use them effectively, and don't forget to take a gun with a silencer - it stops the smoke from lighting up when you fire. Now if only I wouldn't keep forgetting what 'nades I've bought until I see them fly out of my not-as-alive-as-I'd-like player model.

I've seen that message before - it comes up when I try to run a Source engine game over Remote Desktop. Means that Direct3D doesn't want to run for some reason or another. If you have an ATi card, try running the "ATI Smart" service (if you've disabled it). That would be in Start -> Run -> services.msc -> OK. Next, try downloading Driver Cleaner, uninstalling your current drivers, booting into safe mode, running Driver Cleaner (for both ATi and nVidia if you've had both types of cards installed in the past), and then restarting to normal mode and reinstalling your preferred drivers. Failing that, you could try reinstalling DirectX or using the "sfc /scannow" command in the run box (this command restores critical Windows files. Needs the XP disc to run.) Otherwise, beats me!

All fascination with this "Radix Protector" aside, how'd you manage to accumulate a dozen spyware programs just surfing the web?!?

I'd say the new CT model looks nice for the most part, but they just kill my framerate with all that extra bump/cubemapping. Plus I'm just used to the old ones, so I guess I'll stick with those.

Whoohoo! I always wondered why my grenades went *tink* *tink* *nothing* when I did kamikaze runs. And I suppose Train is a port of a 1.6 map, isn't it? I guess that means I'll be condemned to be lost and confused for a little while while everyone else knows where to go. Those servers are taking an awfully long time to update...

I really don't know if the bridging affects what protocols and services are bound to adapters. It's not something I've tried. I suppose you could also limit shares to certain user/passwords if you are using XP Professional, but then you have to set security permissions and map directories to a drive letter to access them on other computers. It's a much bigger pain, but I know at least that will work. The best thing would be to give it a shot and see what happens.

In the network connection area of the control panel, right click on the adapter you don't want filesharing on, choose properties, and uncheck file/print sharing. That should do it.
