Relocate our CS Server?

Fatty

Recommended Posts

Having the same IP for a long time is a big pro for staying with GD.

The ping is obviously another good factor.

I would like us to brainstorm the pros and cons involved with moving CS to fiberfrag. It's only an idea.

Fact: We'd save $50 / month.

You guys hash it out. It's only talk.

I just send this email to fiber today:

We currently have our counter-strike server with GameDaemons.  I want to

table the idea of moving CS to fiber, but to even begin that, I'd need a

place for my guys to play and test.

We've had the same IP now for years, but the counter to that is the monthly

savings that would result in a change.  There's no way I could even bring

it up with testing something.

Ideally, I'd like a server that I could configure exactly like ours is now

and test out.

I guess worst case, we'd need to know the IPs of current fiberfrag cs

servers out there.

Thanks!

Also, numerous people mentioned last night how smooth that clone server ran. Wanna know why? No addons.

Now, I'm not on the forefront of our CS group, but I'll say this to you again: We need to figure out together what we feel is NECESSARY to have.....because it's the gameplay that matters. Ironically, some of the people that want the extras are the same ones that claim lag most of time. Neither here, nor there....we gotta figure out what's important.

But first, we have to decide if we want to save $50 / month and if that's even a possibility. No matter what happens, this is a good time to think about it. Today I pay for another month with Trop and GD. If we DID decide to change, we'd want a transition period....a way for all of our regulars to get the message that we've moved.

So at any rate, let's make this decision within about a week, which would leave us about 3 weeks for a transition period if we did indeed feel it was worth it to move.

Please read in the public CS forums the topics about feedback and ping/routes. Here's a link for ya.

If this is the official vote post.....I'm all for the switch.

As for the plugins, I like the ones we are using now. All this bullet "register" stuff means nothing to me, as it really doesn't matter what my stats are. I really only care about balanced teams and having some fun.

I ping 30s to the clone and 50s to the existing trop. One thing to consider is perhaps to strip off some of the addons on the existing trop--see how it runs with nothing on it. Albeit, my experience with GD for the past 6months or so has been that their network will get chokey/lossy and servers are sometimes overbooked. Particularly in CHI and TX

In my opinion go with the minimum addons. I play cs usually just to play a game or 2 and not for the bells and whistles. Just go with what makes admining optimal. The switch works for me I have less hops to the new server and my ping is consistent.

I'd also like to find another CS admin within our group. mrX RARELY plays CS anymore. Although he's great at it, there's no reason that he should have to invest time into something he's not working with.

Also, he's got real life stuff going on now. Anyone have skills with adminmod?

FYI:

I've moved into the next step with Fiber, asking a few more questions about servers, etc. $600 / year is what we'll save by doing this (at the very least)

We'll have roughly 1 month to make this transition (with both servers up). I'll do things like change the name, motms, etc. We'll need people to note the IP, etc, not be redirected.

Your job, as a CSer, is going to be to help make this happen. To play on the new server instead of the old one...or else come May 4 when GD Tropolis goes down, we'll have no base on the Tropolis Too (or whatever you guys wanna name it)
