appalachian_fox January 9, 2006 Share appalachian_fox Member January 9, 2006 lol, farmer! I have been to Vegas twice, once as a stepping stone to get to the Grand Canyon and once for a long weekend to chill. I stayed at the Excalibur that time, and boy it was cheap: $40 / night! Of course, it was a real slow time, but the hotel was awesome. Personally, I can spend two or three days just cruising the strip, walking through the hotels. The casino floors are huge, and they all have other interesting things you can browse for free. The malls are cool, too, and if you are a window shopper you will get to see some amazing examples of Capitalist excess in action. The spas are relatively cheap in some places, and if you like gyms, saunas and that kind of junk you can easily kill half a day or more there. I think a day pass at Excalibur cost $14, but I had a few visits free from a hotel certificate book I got gratis at check-in, so I didn't have to pay. Of course, other services (massages, etc.) are above and beyond that. If you go to the Dam or the Grand Canyon, make sure you get a rental car with unlimited mileage and no penalty for crossing state lines...Some places will charge a hefty penalty for exceeding mileage or traveling out of state...Of course, I wasn't paying attention, if you are driving in that's not an issue. It will be a gas expense, though. Another fun thing to do if you are a spectator (like me) is watch people play games. I can do that for a while if it's a good table (craps, for example, which I still don't understand but have fun anyway) but YMMV, especially if you are more of a participator than a spectator. Most casinos offer free lessons every day, they run about a half hour to an hour and they do them for several table games...Even if you know how to play, you can watch and usually pick up something interesting from the dealer and even if you don't it can kill a few hours. Perhaps the most entertaining activity is people-watching. Just about every type of person will show up in Vegas, so bring binoculars and your field guide You may draw some attention from security, but most likely not and they shouldn't give you a hard time unless you're trying to actually do something wholly forbidden. Have fun! That's the most important part.
MrDuke January 9, 2006 Share MrDuke Member January 9, 2006 RollerCoaster and skyride on the Strat are awesome. Make sure you do them at night for the full effect. Food: Binion's has awesome shrimp cocktail--cheap! Nugget has great burgers Steak house in the Rio (can't remember the name). DROOL,DROOL! Flamingo had a great buffet, but I think every place in Vegas does. Check it out if you can. Taxi's are quick but expensive. Buses are sloowww but cheaper. I'll dig up some more later. Colonel Klink January 10, 2006 Share Colonel Klink Member January 10, 2006 My Fiancee and I were in Vegas in September for a few days. Here are some ideas and what we did that was good/bad. Vegas may be cheesy but man you really do forget the real world and work when you're there... The Good Bellagio - Stayed at the Bellagio, we got upgraded to a Lakeview room and had a good view of the fountains, they were amazing. You could even get the music from the fountains over the TV...we spent hours just watching the fountains from our room. Went to see 'O' the cirque du Soleil show at the Bellagio. It was simply AMAZING, you would not be disappointed if this is the only show you saw in Vegas. The stage is a technological wonder. Hoover Dam - About $50.00 to go to the Dam each and it will take about 6 hours but driving thru the desert is cool if you haven't done it before and the dam itself is a true world wonder. Shark Reef - Mandalay Bay's tanks are huge with awesome fish. Madame Tussaud's - The wax museum was great, overpriced (but everything in vegas is). I have great picture of me scoring over Shaq! Treasure Island "Sirens of TI" - This is the free show outside of Treasure Island, show is good (its free after-all). But get there early for a good viewing spot. Simply walking the strip is awesome. This was my first time to Vegas so we went into all the hotels and spent at least a dollar each on video poker or slots in each, great fun. The Bad Bellagio Buffet - For what you get I think it was over priced. I thought it would be an amazing buffet being the Bellagio but we went their once and didn't go back. Food in general- The best meals I had were all room service where the food was expensive, fresh and delicious. Otherwise, everything else was disappointing. I can't remember the restaurants but probably because they were so forgettable. Next time we go we will try some higher end places. Star Trek Experience - My fiancee loved it, I thought it was silly, I'm not a trekky she is, enough said. We also stopped at Quarks Bar afterward and had a warp core breach a huge drink with dry-ice in it. Klingons and other actors came around and chatted with us, again my fiancee was right into it. Thats it we did lots of little things that were fun gambled a ton and came out up about $100 bucks and drank ourselves silly while playing at the Bellagio slots, video poker and by the pool when we we're taking in a show or walking around. Good luck, hope you have fun. Cheers, Colonel Klink P.S. Bring your walking shoes.
Magruter January 10, 2006 Author Share Magruter Member January 10, 2006 Thanks for the replys guys!! Anyone know of a good coupon book?
appalachian_fox January 10, 2006 Share appalachian_fox Member January 10, 2006 Sorry, Mag, don't know anything about those but I would check with your hotel first. Usually they provide a small, free coupon book for activities in the hotel. They may also provide more information on other coupon books available, and though they may have a vested interest in their own operation they are certainly not going to let you get taken on a bad product if there are less reputable "coupon books" out there. anonymo January 26, 2006 Share anonymo Member January 26, 2006 (edited) Don't take any form of recording devices with you. Go see Tom Jones and throw you boxers on stage... Oh yeah, win big, share the wealth... Leave the door cracked until I get there?? My plane doesn't arrive until 10 tonight. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Fill your fridge with tofu and non-alcoholic beer... Set duke traps in your bathroom...(use cocktail weinies instead of cheese, better yet, cheese filled cocktail weinies...) appalachian_fox January 26, 2006 Share appalachian_fox Member January 26, 2006 Oooh, if you're as big a cheapskate as I, see if they have a coffee maker in the room. If they do, you can use it without coffee to heat water to a mild lukewarm and make soggy, warm oatmeal for breakfast: All you have to do is bring some packets (or Tupperware if you do the Quaker Bland-o-matic), a bowl and a spoon and it'll save you the $5+ you'll spend on a breakfast. It's also worth checking the hot water side of the faucet, because in some hotels it's actually hotter than the coffee maker water gets. Of course, this is really Spartan and not generally for those who enjoy their taste buds.

Do you take the lightbulbs from the lamps??
