Pittsburgh fans hold their collective breath

Cower should be mad. I'd be mad. After what happened to Winslow last year you'd think that he'd be more carefull.

He even had Terry Bradshaw tell him to park the bike until he retires.

Maybe now he'll take that into consideration. He's lucky to be alive.

You got that right man.

John Clayton in a side bar on the Roethlisberger story page:

The reason the Steelers and most teams don't put specific language into contracts about off-the-field accidents is that they don't feel it's necessary. The NFL Management Council has advised teams to use the phrasing "for any reason" in regards to a player who defaults on his contract because of an injury suffered outside of football.

Roethlisberger's accident is a good reason why.

I agree. We'll have to see if he'll lose any money from his contract like what happened to Winslow. I wouldn't fault the Steelers if they decided to do this.

True that.

My uncle was a nationally ranked tennis player several years ago (not pro circut, but ranked nationally as an amatuer) He loved riding his motorcycle, and had always "been safe". One day he was riding behind a car which was making a right hand turn, when another car, seeing the first car turning right decided it was clear to turn left - never seeing my uncle's bike.

You can guess what happened. Fortunately, he was wearing his helmet, and riding leathers. Those are the only things that saved his skin, as well as his life. As you might imagine, he never played tennis, a game he loved, again. He walks with a noticible limp, but at least he's still with us.

It's not a question of how safe YOU are, there's always other people who factor into the equation.

The choices YOU make everyday effect EVERYONE who cares about you.

Remember that. :peace:

I had to go to work, so my mom kept me updated all day (my co-workers love me).

From NFL.com

Four doctors operated on Roethlisberger for seven hours to treat multiple facial fractures and "all of the fractures were successfully repaired," Dr. Harry W. Sell, chairman of the surgery department at Mercy Hospital, told reporters.

Dr. Daniel Pituch, who led the team, said Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition, and doctors were aware of no other serious injuries.

"His brain, spine, chest and abdomen appear to be without serious injury and there are no other confirmed injuries at this time," he said.

The doctors said his condition was not expected to change through the evening, and that no updates were expected until June 13. They declined to release further information at his family's request.

If you really want to know, Pittsburgh has two main websites that cover this and keep it updated:

According to the early reports (and at this time, that's all there are) he shouldn't lose anything on his contract if he's fully healthy for the season. If not, then there's always the possibility that part, or all of the seasons bonus and or contract money can be forfeited.

Yeah, but his injuries are serious enough that he will probably not be able to take the field this year. There are a lot of people who have died from motorcycle crashes into cars.

I just saw on tv how serious the injuries are. I didn't realize that before.

The total: broken jaw, injuries to both knees, fractured skull, and loss of teeth.

This was a horrible tragidy and I take my previous comments back. I appologize for any I might have offended.

It's all good.

I had already read all the news reports and (confession) had been drinking down at the pub prior to posting, so may have come across a little "loose cannon-like" before.

Buy ya a beer at FF if yer there. :peace:

I can't go this year due to money issues. Also at 18 I'm underage so buying me a beer might not be such a good idea.

Okay, the news I have been waiting for has finally arrived (well, this and that he was going to live).

SOURCE

Tuesday, June 13, 2006

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The injuries to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger were confined to his face and the Steelers are confident he should heal and be ready to play in the season opener Sept. 7 against the Miami Dolphins, sources told the Post-Gazette today.

Roethlisberger has a broken jaw, a broken nose and some injuries to his teeth but otherwise came through his motorcycle accident on Monday with nothing else but some scrapes and bruises. Published reports that detailed injuries to his knees and shoulders are untrue, sources said.

One source said that the surgery on Roethlisberger's face took so long -- seven hours -- in order to assist in a faster recovery time. Roethlisberger also should be ready to participate in training camp, although he may not play in the first preseason game Aug. 12 in Arizona.

The quarterback had seven hours of surgery yesterday afternoon and evening to repair facial fractures caused when his motorcycle struck a car on Second Avenue at the 10th Street Bridge.

After the surgery, doctors said the facial fractures were successfully repaired but they would not elaborate. They did say that there appears to be no brain, spine, chest or abdomen injuries.

There have also been reports that Roethlisberger doesn't even have a motorcycle license in the state of Pennsylvania.

Source:ESPN.com

Ben Roethlisberger might have been riding without a license to drive a motorcycle when he was involved in an accident Monday.

Pittsburgh television station KDKA reported Tuesday that police are checking whether the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback had a license.

Roethlisberger was riding this motorcycle when he collided with an automobile in Pittsburgh on Monday morning.

Sources told the TV station that Roethlisberger had a license to operate a car but has never had a Pennsylvania motorcycle license.

Roethlisberger had a learner's permit to operate a motorcycle that expired March 29 but had never taken the written and driving tests for a motorcycle license, a source told KDKA.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Tammy Ewin told the station that police would "have no comment on licensing issues" until after the accident investigation.

Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, had surgery Monday after breaking his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash.

Roethlisberger remained in serious but stable condition after seven hours of surgery, according to Dr. Daniel Pituch, chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Mercy Hospital.

"He suffered multiple facial fractures," Pituch said. "All of the fractures were successfully repaired. His brain, spine, chest and abdomen appear to be without serious injury. And there are no other confirmed injuries at this time."

The doctors declined to release further information at the family's request.

ESPN.com's John Clayton confirmed that Roethlisberger also suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, has lost or chipped a number of teeth and has minor injuries to his knees from hitting the pavement.

Roethlisberger, 24, was not wearing a helmet, police said. He has said he likes to ride without one, a habit that once prompted a lecture from Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher.

In May 2005, Cowher warned him about safe riding after Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was injured in a motorcycle accident. Winslow tore knee ligaments and was lost for the season.

Roethlisberger has pointed out a Pennsylvania state law requiring helmets was amended in September 2003 to make helmets optional.

I spoke with my mom about the license issue; it is true. However, I don't care about that. I can't see what difference it makes, other then he was illegal.

This is a good thread. It compares human compassion with competitive behavior.

I don't think anyone really wishes any ill-will upon another human being.

I think we become so caught up in the rivalry between two teams that the players become inhuman, they are just players or even just names. Now that the player is dehumanized, it's easy to make cold, heartless comments.

But then the dehumanized name becomes human again, and now you're in a quandary. Human compassion or competitive nature. Which is greater?

Good lesson in human behavior.
