ZesteR February 24, 2008 Share ZesteR Member February 24, 2008 I just bought a 200gb 7200rpm HDD for my laptop. The prices dropped from $200 down to $121 after tax and shipping (Dell.com) so I bit on it. Right now I have a Dell laptop that came with a (I believe Seagate) 80gb 5400rpm HDD. I have 2 partitions on it. One 61.9gb and the other 9.9gb. For now, I just want to transfer my Vista Home Premium OS (maybe later linux) to the new hard drive. Is there software that can do this for me, and also transfer all my data too? I have a PC that has a spare 80gb hdd I can use if needed. I have about ~50 gb of data to transfer. `ZesteR
ZeroDamage February 24, 2008 Share ZeroDamage Member February 24, 2008 I like to use Gparted for this. You can download it via a Live CD here: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ Thank Linux and Open Source for this marvelous CD.
ZesteR February 24, 2008 Author Share ZesteR Member February 24, 2008 Nice! Ty you know I'm one to use open source. I will definitly have to create some ext3 partitons, so I can dual boot and see my files on both OS's
dwEEziL February 24, 2008 Share dwEEziL Member February 24, 2008 GParted does hdd cloning/imaging? Didn't know that. I previously used Ghost but lately just have gone with the *nix utility "dd" which also has a windows port.

ZesteR February 29, 2008 Author Share ZesteR Member February 29, 2008 what type of hardware will I need to transfer data from a 2.5" HDD to another 2.5" hdd. I do not have any adapters or cables or external hdd cases. Could I take my laptop hdd i have now, plug it into my PC somehow, and pull the images/partitions (using GParted) onto a 3.5 hdd in my pc, then copy that back over onto the new hdd partition on the new 200 gb laptop hdd? dwEEziL February 29, 2008 Share dwEEziL Member February 29, 2008 I'd look for an inexpensive USB2/Firewire/eSata 2.5" hdd external enclosure. Not sure whether you can plug it directly into your desktop computer or not as I have never tried this.
