ThruX September 5, 2008 Share ThruX Member September 5, 2008 Well I posted awhile back on what notebook to purchase. I wanted a dell and still do. I have been reading good things about Asus. I am really lost on graphic cards, processor and so on. So I have cash in hand ready to buy. Can anyone give me a good recomendation and link. This will primarliy be for work/school, CAD and gaming. So I would really appreciate a link to something that is really just a good all around computer. Thanks.
Preacher September 5, 2008 Share Preacher Member September 5, 2008 (edited) Acer Aspire I just this for my wife and have been messing around with it a bunch. Only thing bad I could say is that it doesn't come with a 64 bit OS. Other than that it's freaking awesome for the price. I'm very impressed. Played STALKER and UT04 on it without any glitches. Also did a few video compiles and it still had most of the resources unused during so I feel we did well on the purchase. If I did it again I'd get the same one. Cujo September 6, 2008 Share Cujo Member September 6, 2008 this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834220340 or this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834220337 depends on the size you want. the 14" will obviously be more portable. both with play most games just fine and be sexy machines. just bought another asus tonight for a friend and i'm so impressed. it came with 2 carrying cases, a bluetooth mouse, and 2 year warranty. not to mention the first year is accidental damage comparable to dell's complete care. the model was the w7s b2w shown here: http://infonec.com/site/main.php?module=detail&id=350465
ThruX September 6, 2008 Author Share ThruX Member September 6, 2008 Is 6.5 lbs to heavy to carry all day? Equipped with Nvidia 1 GB VRAM is this beneficial? I think the 15.3 might be it.
Preacher September 6, 2008 Share Preacher Member September 6, 2008 I don't know, you might get a few more fps out of that $500 but I honestly cannot see getting that when the Acer is just as nice for what you claim it's for.
Cujo September 6, 2008 Share Cujo Member September 6, 2008 (edited) bigchief, it would get heavy after some time but unless you're a small guy you should be fine. i got the 14" so it fit better in my lap in the car. as far as the 1gb video it's probably mostly unnecessary as that gpu isn't powerful enough to take advantage of it. preacher, they don't even compare. acer has always been a budget manufacturer. the specs don't compare, the performance won't compare. the one you're linking has intergrated intel gfx which is complete rubbish. i'm amazed you were able to play those games at all let alone well. not to mention the asus would have a better warranty if anything did happen. while they don't use the games you mentioned you can see the performance is dreadful... http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/14261/8 Edited September 6, 2008 by Cujo

PS.thx again for the loaner laptop that WOULD run cs
Clueless September 6, 2008 Share Clueless GC Alumni September 6, 2008 Oh yeah, almost forgot about this one, I know, I never liked Gateway either, but I guess they are doing things a bit differently now and Maximum PC reviewed this thing in the Oct 08 issue and gave it a 9 out of 10 and a KickArse award, and they tested it as a gaming rig....133fps in Quake4 and 108fps in Fear....1400 bucks is a great price for that although a bit heavy...almost 10lbs if memory serves, but it' worth a read. http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668123.php

Cujo September 7, 2008 Share Cujo Member September 7, 2008 nice find. better vid card. old chipset and cpu though. weird screen size. it's a 16/9 resolution screen which i've actually never see on a laptop or a desktop monitor (natively). the more i think about it that is really strange. such an old chipset and cpu with a brand new vid card, n wireless and vista 64 bit. that laptop is illogical. ThruX September 8, 2008 Author Share ThruX Member September 8, 2008 Yes it is, I really like it so far, From what I have done so far It is more than I need. I like the screen size it is like a commuting widescreen tv. Vista office is sweet, One notes is great! I have not played a game yet, but it has some one touch button that you can bump up cpu settings for gaming at touch of button. I can actually alt/tab in and out of programs, my old comp would crash if I did that. Keyboard has a great feel and the number pad is a huge help. Only thing I do not like so far is the flashy color. I guess I will see how things go after I learn how you use vista more. Thanks for pointing me to asus I am impressed.
