ConGregation January 2, 2004 Share ConGregation Member January 2, 2004 I was planning on playing my new game (Mare Nostrum) Tuesday around six with some family. At around 2 I was looking at the rules to make sure I knew how to play it when I got to thinking about all the cards that were going to be a mess to handle and everyone had to get new cards every round and then put them all back. So I thought it would be neat to make a card holder... So I drew up some plans and went downstairs to see what I could do. I had it all glued and usable by the time they arrived, just didnt get it finished. I have yet to completely finish it. I'm hoping that since the project is so small that any wood expansion will be minimal. All the grains are running together except for the bottom ends. For those I just put a dab of glue in the middle. I think it should be alright but I really dont know much about that stuff. If I were to make it now I would change a couple of things. First I would make it so the bottom angled up so the cards would be more visible from front row to back. Second I think I should have used a "softer" hardwood like cherry or even walnut. Since it is a small project an expensive wood like that wouldnt be prohibitive. I just have a lot of oak downstairs.
Bubblegum Bandit January 2, 2004 Share Bubblegum Bandit Member January 2, 2004 Looks like you payed attention to detail...nice job. I wouldn't worry about any expansion or contraction in something that small. Looks great.
ConGregation January 2, 2004 Author Share ConGregation Member January 2, 2004 Well it was pretty simple and easy cause I didnt really do any joinery. Just lots of wood glue
lance January 3, 2004 Share lance Member January 3, 2004 Nice little project, dude. I'll have to take some photo's of the deck and fence we built last year and then get some photo's of the house we're building this summer and post em up here. ConGregation January 3, 2004 Author Share ConGregation Member January 3, 2004 Man, dovetail that sucka! heh. That would be some pretty intricate dovetailing. The "dividers" between the slots are only 1/4". And the "rails" are 3/8" at most. I could see dados. But as strong as woodglues are I dont see it falling apart. And besides... I was in a hurry
dwEEziL January 3, 2004 Share dwEEziL Member January 3, 2004 L L, just messing with ya Con. But remember, any job worth doing is worth doing wrong the first time. Hey, how does that work with the "measure once, measure twice, measure three times...cut once."?
Bubblegum Bandit January 3, 2004 Share Bubblegum Bandit Member January 3, 2004 just cut it and measure it later....that way you can have more nice wood laying around the shop.
