  1. unzip it, put the System filed in you System folder, the Music files in you music folder, etc then get the patch.
  2. yes, unfortunatly melee weapons are 3rd person only. but you get used to it pretty quick. the big problem is online play, there's servers, but no people. all the servers were empty, though that could be because it was 4 in the morning. We've got to get a bunch of people online and playing a big melee game . Be sure to go into settings and select a melee weapon before playing. I prefer the daggers or the warhammer. yeah, the mines are great. they sing little songs, and taunt you as they're coming after you. they kinda sound like alvin and the chipmunks.
  3. Chaos UT Chaos UT started back with the original Unreal Tournament. It was so good that Epic included it in the Game of the Year Edition. And Chaos UT continues with it's latest release for Unreal Tournament 2004. I'll write a full review of it later, but for right now, freaking download it people. I haven't had this much fun since CS was going full swing! There's melee combat with bastard swords, maces, battle axes, war hammers, katanas and more. Or there's normal UT play with some new weapons, like the crossbow, flame thrower type thing, seeker mines (that tell you that they're going to come get you), and others. There's standard deathmatch, capture the flag, king of the hill, assault, and I think even onslaught. Here's a few pics I took this last three hours that I've been playing.
  4. The world has a host of retial World War II shooters, so why bother modding Unreal Tournament 2004 into yet another World War II shooter? Simple, people like World War II shooters, and there has yet to be one, that I've seen anyway, with this much reality. Red Orchestra is the winner of best FPS in the "Make Something Unreal" challenge held by nVidia and Epic Games. After playing for a short time, it is easy to see why it won, and why it is so popular. The first thing I noticed upon entering the game, is that there is no crosshair. I asked about this, like the n00b I am, and thankfully, the other players were understanding. That's the way the game is, no crosshair, just like in WWII. The only way to aim, is bring up your iron sight and put the enemy inside that little metal trough. Unless of course you have a sniper rifle, in which case you can look through a scope. Not everyone gets a sniper rifle though, I soon found out. The map I played only allowed one player on each team to be a sniper at any given time. And there are limits set for every other weapon class except the lowest riflemen as well. If you can only fit into the rifleman category though, just kill an enemy and hope he's got a better gun for you to take. Speaking of guns, one unique feature of RO is that they can be shot out of your hands. Here I was standing at a window trying to line up a sniper in a sixth story building across the street, when I was pushed back a few feet and found I had no rifle in my hands. Lucky for my stunned self that a message popped up and informed me that my gun had been shot out of my hands. I then had to belly crawl back to the window and recover it, along with all my ammo clips, and then get out of that building before I was overrun by the sniper's buddies. Grahically, the game is much like Day of Defeat, Call of Duty, or Battlefield 1942. I played the Stalingrad map, for comparison's sake, and found it to be very good. Fires blaze in several places, usually on wrecked automobiles or tanks. Buildings were bombed out, or shelled open, and rubble piles provided nice cover. The many "sniper holes" reminded me very much of Day of Defeat, which I think has been my favorite WWII game to date. Beating the feeling of a good game on Caen is hard. The map is small, much smaller than Battlefield's maps, with no drivable vehicles. Perhaps other maps have vehicles, I haven't had a chance to look. Once you get the hang of aiming, the gameply becomes normal. You run to the nearest building, crawl in through a half burried window, and try not to be seen whilst chucking grenades down on the enemy fighting your teammates in the street. Oh, and beware of snipers shooting your gun out of your hands. The game operates on a class system, with your usual snipers, sub-machine gunners, heavy machine gunners, riflemen, and officers as choices. Some classes have a choice of different primary or secondary weapons, some only have one option. Overall, the graphics are good, the gameplay is nothing new, but fun none-the-less, and there are plenty of servers available to play on. Below are some screenshots I took during my playtest of the Stalingrad map. If you wish to learn more or download the mod, find it here.
  5. *cough* yes. many. check my review on Majestic 12 for a start. play that for a couple days while I write a review on one of the other great UT mods out. If Majestic 12 isn't your thing, or you want something more polished, try Red Orchestra (uber-realistic WWII mod) or Chaos UT (swords and battleaxes) or Deathball (football/handball/rugby/soccer). Or go to www.planetunreal.com and find some yourself.
  6. d/l now. gonna show it to Nitemare, might drag him away from evercrack.
  7. *bump* I'm back in action, anyone want to join me?
  8. so back to the topic at hand... did anyone actually try the mod?
  9. www.empirepoker.com is a good one too. liked party poker better though. Nitemare's started playing empire poker with real money now. when he's not playing evercrack, that is.
  10. Just want to know how many in the community play Battlefield.
  11. just played it for a few hours today, it's AWSOME! I'll be writing a review complete with screenshots in the next couple of days. I'll say now though, it's definatly worth playing.
  12. I don't understand why you or anyone else would think Counterstrike is a "sucky" game. If it sucks so much why has it been the number one internet FPS for the past six years? Over 64 thousand unique players are playing CS on Gamespy every day. That's compared to the just over 4 thousand that are playing Unreal Tournament 2004. And this is nothing like either Battlefield game. I have no idea where you got that idea. That doesn't matter though, because if you would try the mod, instead of dissing it, you'd realize that it's really not that much like Counterstrike. CS was made with the Quake 2 engine, Majestic 12 is made with the UT2k4 engine, they feel nothing alike.
  13. I've just downloaded, installed and played a bit of the newly released UT2004 mod, Majestic 12. I must say, for a first release, it's quite good. It's much like an early version of Counterstrike. The gameplay is natural, you can jump in without even configuring your controls and find pretty much everything you need right away. There is a story behind the mod, which I'll let the developers tell, but let it suffice to say this is your tried and true multiplayer FPS. Two teams, equipped with mp5s, shotguns, sniper rifles, HE grenades, etc. battling on small-to-medium maps, with a goal to either complete an objective or eliminate the other team. However, Majestic 12 adds a couple of nice touches that make it worthy of a second or third play. There is the XP system, which works much like Enemy Territory does. Do well (i.e. kill the enemy or complete objectives) and you get more experience points. Unlike ET though, YOU decide where your XP gets used. The total XP is translated into points that can be put towards attributes such as strength, stealth, health or control. This allows you to customize your character to fit your playing style, much like an RPG though not nearly as in depth. The whole system is implemented very well, and even a player who isn't expecting anything like that (I wasn't) can get the idea in one or two rounds. Graphics are a bit un-polished, though overall they look very nice. As I stated before, it often feels like an early version of Counterstrike. The mod looks and feels promising, but being on it's first release, it still lacks the polish of some other UT2k4 mods. Check out the story, view screenshots, and download the client here. Also, here are a few shots I took while playing this morning. They're a little big because MSPaint doesn't have a resize tool.
  14. it's the beta, yes. this will be the stress test phase, i.e. the part where they get as many people to log on as possible to see if the servers will be able to take it. If they fail, it's still part of the beta, so they don't look bad. If the servers take it fine, they release the game and we all have to pay for it.
  15. Fileplanet is bringing it's subscribers (like me ) a spot in the stress test phase of both the World of Warcraft beta, and the Tribes: Vengence beta. Both are available for download to anyone with a FP subscription (like me ). For the WoW beta, you log in, get a unique key, and then download the 2GB+ file and wait for the stress test to begin. I'll let you know how it goes .
  16. Yes, the single player demo is now available. I'll probably get it soon.
  17. well, didn't get a pirated copy of XP, just cracked the one I have. I'm up and running now, both Linux and XP on this computer. Look for me on Cuffo tomorrow!
  18. I'll be getting it. Saw the announcment the other day on Fileplanet. Should be pretty sweet. I kinda like BF:1942 better than BF:V anyway.
  19. Gaim and Kopete are the chat clients. Gaim is AIM-only, Kopete is AIM,MSN,Yahoo,ICQ,IRC and some others all in one. As for how linux is going...well, let me put it this way: I'm currently looking for a pirated version of WinXP Pro. Yep. I'm going to hold off on committing fully to linux until ATI releases some drivers. There's a petition on the web with over 10,000 signatures (mine included) that asks ATI to release some resonable drivers for Linux systems, because right now, anything newer than a 9200 has no 3D Acceleration. My 9800 Pro is recognized as having 16MB of memory and it works in 2D only. So my options are to put in my old GeForce 2 GTS, or get Windows. I'm having trouble with all my drivers at the moment, at least the other components work though (Oh, except sound, onboard sound ain't working either, which would really bug me if it weren't for the graphics problem taking up all my time).
  20. My new Athlon 64 3000+ Linux Equipped PC! Linux is easy so far, KDE is very much like Windows, only better. It comes with it's own CD/DVD burning software, mp3 player/organizer, a plethora of screensavers, lots more and much better games then Windows, a web browser/file explorer, several e-mail programs to choose from, a Windows emulator, OpenOffice.org, a spell checker that's working as I type this, and more that I haven't found yet. Oh yeah, and no viruses, worms, trojans , or spyware. I'm thinking I'm really going to like being part of the open source revolution. As far as hardware goes, here's what I ended up with: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ AS Rock K8S8X motherboard featuring the SiS 755 chipset, DDR400, AGP 8x, SATA 1.5Gb/s, RAID 0,1, Hybrid Booster, 8xUSB2.0, 5.1 audio, 10/100 ethernet and an endorsement from ocworkbench.com. From a quick scan of the BIOS, it's fully overclockable. (though I'm not going to OC for awhile. 1024MB A-Data PC-3200 RAM Thermaltake Purepower 420W psu and a newegg alarm clock/calculator and a newegg silver ink pen (very nice pen, btw) Oh, SUSE Linux also has two instant messenger programs to choose from, so as soon as I get one of those up and running, I'll be available on AIM again. (Playboy JL, for those that don't know) Glad to finally be back, now I just need to get UT2004 working! And I do believe there's a Linux version of CS...
  21. I don't want a creative card. I had a Live! 5.1 and before that a Live! Value card, didn't like either of them. Sound was scratchy off and on, and Creative software is useless, and their drivers are impossibly annoying. I'll use the onboard for now (it's an Athlon 64, I've got plenty of processor to use) and eventually buy probably http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc....-118-101&DEPA=0 <--that card
  22. So this source is out by now, and you all are playing it... you need CS:CZ to be able to play? What about after this beta period is done? Will you need HL2 to play CS:S?
  23. Newegg is waiving the restocking fee on the refurb board I bought. Now I just need to decide which retail board to get. I don't need/want anything fancy, good onboard audio is about all I'm looking for. As always, cheaper is better. I'm wondering if anyone has any insight into these two boards: CHAINTECH "SK8T800" CHAINTECH "VNF3-250"
